This series was great for me. i'm in the middle of restoring my Grandfather's planes that have been passed down to me. your techniques helped alot, since there was quite a bit of gunk and rust. Keep up the great content!

The knob and tote look great. I have resurrected a rusty Stanley #5 myself. After I stripped the finish from the wood It did look like black paint but it may have been black or very dark brown dye. The knob looked as though it had been floating in a container of dye because 2/3 of it was jet black deep inside the wood. There was a nice little 1/3 of the knob which was pure white. No way to hide that except with a very dark brown stain & finish.

Thanks for the tips, very helpful indeed! I have a few old planes with hardwood totes and had not found a finish I liked for them, I will give this a try.

I might be wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that in the 1943 year of plane production WW2 prevented consistent shipments of rosewood. Stanley used beech handles during this year and went back to rosewood after WW2.

The inventor patented the No. 340 in the background as a scrub plane but Stanley had other marketing ideas so I spent $800 , put a tall rosewood knob in front and a scrub blade, replacing the original straight cutter and now on the pull stroke THE NO. 340 can actually be a very useful plane‼️⁉️👍🏻

Thank you for your knowledge & info. I've built my scrapers & sanding sticks. Now I'm heading out to my shop to start my first plane. Type 17 No.5&1/2 I picked up at an auction for under $20. Have you ever done a mirror polish on a plane sides, iron, cp brkr & sm parts?

Use an aniline dye, much easier. Enjoy your videos, great work.

Exactly what I was thinking. I've had superb results with Fiebing's Leather dye. Comes in all colors, and dries almost instantly.

Minwax products aren’t what they used to be. You need to try Benjamin Moore’s Old Masters stains. They come in a brush on, a wiping stain, which has more body. They have much more pigment than Minwax.
