Just as a note for future mods and to any viewers, it's safer and easier to pull inline components than individual legs of a chip. If there's a capacitor going into the jungle on each of the osd rgb lines, for example, it's electrically the same to pull the cap and tap into the jungle from the pads as to pull the jungle's legs and use those, but the first option is less likely to damage something beyond repair.

@@jongeo Best place to start is just looking for the service manual/schematic diagram for the set you want to mod. Elektrotanya and ManualsLib are good resources, but if you can't find your set's manual there you might try a manual for another set with the same chassis (chassis id should be written on the same sticker on the back of the set as model number) Once you've got that, look for the major chips on the schematic diagram. You want the Microcontroller, often labelled 'Micon', and the Jungle chip that outputs RGB signal to the tube. Depending on your set's age they may have been fused into one chip for cost savings, then you likely won't have a good place to inject your external RGB. If they are separate, find the OSD RGB lines connecting them and identify the components on those lines, there should be something like an inline resistor, a resistor to ground, and a capacitor. If that's not the case, try and find the datasheet for your jungle chip, you may need to go about injecting your RGB in a different way. But if those components are there, the rest of the job is pretty simple, basically add a 75 ohm resistor to ground on your ext. RGB input connector, then pull up the ground side of the OSD RGB resistor (if it's through hole. If it's SMD you'll need to remove the whole resistor and connect one with the same value to just the signal side, not ground) and tie in your ext RGB there, audio and sync go to an existing composite video input and 5V comes from anywhere you can find it on the TV's board to a toggle switch and then back to the Jungle's YS/YM pin, or if you're using scart 5V comes from pin 16 for a switchless install. The 8-bit guy's video on this subject covers the mod better than I think I've done in text here but it is really very simple for most TVs. Didn't mean to ramble on like that, TL;DR start with your set's service manual, thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Finally an American that RGB mods a TV and puts an actual scart input instead of some weird connector. Us Europeans are fortunate that almost all TVs have an RGB input. Great job, and you can still use VIDEO 3 as a composite input if you disable the RGB switch. I don't know exactly how our TVs do the switching electronically, but I can explain how it works for us as we don't have external switches to enable RGB. When you have and RGB source and feed the voltage to the blanking circuit you get the RGB image but OSD is still there but superimposed on the RGB, OSD comes semi-transparent. If you switch to another source and open OSD you can actually see the RGB source on the OSD lettering. This is normal behaviour on our TVs. I think you guys there can mod a TV to behave like a European TV and discard the switch if you just mix the RGB input with the OSD, what I mean is just insert the signal and blanking to the jungle chip with out desoldering. You would still need to insert composite sync in an input like you did there. I just looked at my TV's schematic and it looks like the case, you just tie the RGB signal and blanking to the chip, you just select the source where your composite sync is and turn on your console, the voltage for the blanking is supplied by the source from the scart plug. Want regular TV just turn off the console, the blanking voltage is switched off and TV goes back to normal.

Mine had dual RGB inputs on my Sony Trinitron KV series jungle chip so I did it differently. I used the old Teletext/Text Decoder board that was connected to it to feed in the RGB signal directly(there is actually a connector on top of it to connect to the Picture-in-Picture card with RGB and ground) and just made my arcade connector fit the plug. On the teletext/Text Decoder board I also found a 5V output coming out of a voltage regulator, added a resistor and then connected to the blanking pin on the teletext decoder board. Because the board is removable this was easy to do outside of the TV. Some Sony TV's didn't come with teletext cards, however you should still be able to use the pinned connector and make you own connections. The final step was trying to feed in video sync. Because teletext is presumably disabled on AV channels I was unable to feed in using the Video input on the back of the TV. However after much mucking around I cut the leg on the TV tuner video output pin so there was no signal from analogue TV anymore (blank screen when turned on on all analogue channels) and then connected the video sync from the arcade output to the CVIN pin on the jungle chip. The benefit of doing it this was is that there is no need for capacitors or resistors on RGB inputs as the TV board has these in place already for teletext input and you just need 1 plug connection for the single Sync cable as well. This means the whole cable can be disconnected from your RGB device if required. The TV Menu still works as it works on a seperate input(RGB input2) without using any switches as it is on a seperate RGB input. I did have issues with showing the TV menu simultaneously while feeding in RGB on input1 (sync conflict maybe?) where the TV menu flickers, however turning off the feed from the arcade (RGB1) stopped the flicker, so there is no switch required, just turn off arcade RGB feed. Also weirdly the Sony Service Menu which allows you to adjust the screen position and size works no problems with the arcade RGB being fed in at the same time, so not sure if this works on some other input, however this is handy as you can adjust the TV while receiving the arcade RGB input.

Awesome job! I will never, EVER understand why RGB SCART was not adopted world wide! At least JP21 should have been standard outside Europe and the UK. In Australia, we were cursed with PAL, but due to our proximity to Japan only had shitty, godawful composite because everything was made in Japan. So we had the shit of PAL consoles without the only decent thing from PAL format. I sadly learned too late about Euro brand TVs such as Loewe, Grundig, B&O etc actually being imported TVs with RGB SCART. I managed to get a couple, but the big supply was far, far from where I live. I lived there in 2013 but discovered them AFTER I left! I did even manage to score a French Trinitron which looks amazing, but has picture issues. It is just a shame that so many of the best CRTs from the late 90's were ruined by 100hz with no way to turn it off. I passed up many Loewe and Grundig TVs for that reason.

Awesome job. @@scottb_02 hey there. For me, I still couldn't get this exact method to work, as I eventually realised that my particular TV just didn't have the necessary R G and B input pins on the Jungle chip... I therefore resorted to a (more direct hack), using some capacitors and feeding a signal directly into the neck board output circuit. Lots of people frown on this method, but I just dont have a TV that supported the method covered in this video. I've since gone on to hack a second TV (using my own method mentioned earlier) and both are still running reliably in my arcade. There is no "easy" way to hack a TV, so be persistent! Hard to find tvs that don't support rgb here lol funny isn't it. I only picked it up because of the vhs player. Anyways I went and took the back off today and it has a scart socket unpopulated with some composite bodged socket soldered in from the factory. It's a really funky trinitron that uses a scart socket to input composite, so in theory should be able to unsolder the adaptor and solder in a scart female socket. Why I mention this is because maybe there are trinitrons floating out in the USA using the same chassis/input boards. I willing to give it a go if it help you guys get Rgb easier

Hello friend, I bought a sony trinitron kv-21fv12 / 5 television with BA-5D chassis, I made the 2 types of modifications I found. Mod 1.- inject the RGB into the bridges between the Micon and the Jungla chip with a resistance of 75 ohms. Mod 2.- lift the legs of the Jungla chip and inject the rgb signal with the 75 ohm resistors to ground and 0.1mf or 104 nanofarad capacitors. I add that I also took the 5 volt signal and the blanking signal connected to a switch to activate and deactivate the OSD signal and the synchronous signal take it from the composite video and then take it from the Luma signal in the siper video and in supervideo it was the best option. Results: In the 2 types of modifications that I made I never used consoles modified to rgb, I only used pcb jamma boards connected by a vga connector that I made and in the 2 modifications that I made the saturation of picture and brightness was very high and although I It lowered the brightness and the picture was not enough to show an acceptable image. I was playing with the values of the resistors and discovered that for pcb jamma boards the best image was with 18 ohm resistors in each color line with the same ground connection and its respective capacitor. Here the weird thing is that the pcb jamma boards like Neo Geo and Cps1 and Cps2 the brightness and the picture can be adjusted very well, but in other jamma boards the picture and brightness are extremely saturated in games like splatterhouse or Caveman ninja, in addition to On some pcb jamma boards for example Mortal kombat 2 and Captain America and The Avengers the vertical frequency was unstable because the image was constantly falling and I also tried to inject direct signal without resistance or capacitor and it does not show brightness or picture, so my conclusion was that the 18 ohms that I added are the best for jamma boards pcbs but not for all games. I repeat that you do not use consoles, just add jjama boards, could help me with this situation?

It's going to be really hard to do it without a schematic. Is there a service manula for your CRT available to buy online? The other thing to do would be to google search your jungle chips info. That would be listed on top of the chip itself. Then you can probably find a chip pinout. Good luck!

(was watching the RGB103 vid and it showed the difference between the two). if csync is possible, where the heck would the wire go? does the Jungle IC accommodate it? also the SNES seems to only do JP-21, but the good news is that there are 3rd party cables made for NA SNES's, but they do contain capacitors etc... and I know RGB mods on CRTs put their own resistors and sometimes capacitors (as seen on other mods) would the caps in the 3rd party cables have undesirable effects when the TV's mod already has caps in it?

I don't think there is the hardware natively on the CRT Chassis to get Csync to work. You may be able to get sync on Luma if needed, but not really sure about csync. It's also hard to tell how some inputs will look on a CRT that is modded. I've had no issues with this Sony's RGB picture quality with any system.

I have a 32 Inch KD-32DX40U which has a 5 blinking light error and the colour looks off, apparently it's white balance and a faulty crt driver how would this be repaired? Thanks

That would take a big effort to try to repair. You could try or try to see about a replacement.

question regarding resistors. most tutorials show resistors being put into the circuit when injecting RGB, however, a lot of cables include resistors or caps. does that mean if i have resistors internal (on the actual mod), that my scart cable should not have resistors in it?

What did you do for sync?
@RetroTechUSA

For sync I tied into one of the composite video inputs. I just soldered a wire from the sync pin on the scart to the composite input.

Why do you need to make this mod? Doesn't it support rgb already? Doesn't it have a scart port already?

I'm not sure exactly. Sorry there isn't a label on the wire pack. It's pretty middle gauge though.

Almost all TVs have electroguns that shoot in RGB. The most important thing to find, is the inputs in you jungle chip.

Hey. I know this has been out for a while and I may not get a reply, but I think the benefits are worth the time to post this. Instead of installing a switch to jump between the new input and the OSD, would diodes not allow you to have both without the need for a switch?
@NicheAsQuiche
2 жыл бұрын
Not quite, for example if both RGB input and OSD are outputting a full screen of 255 blue, they compound and result in 510 blue, overvolting the jungle ICs Blue input, likely killing it. Same for any other combination of colour, although low values that don't add to over 255 will be fine

In the USA, there was no RGB input. We did get Component inputs eventually, but TV's (like this one) only had Composite and S-video in.

If you still offer this RGB mod service for CRT Tvs, I'd like to ship you my tv for service, if it's compatible. Normally I wouldn't consider shipping this heavy tv, but it a very unique set and quite desirable. Is a Samsung GXTV (GX1395). There is some information about it located by doing a google search, for example: killscreen.com/previously/articles/revisiting-gxtv-television-gamers-1997/ I understand I would need to pay shipping both ways, and of course your fee. But in this case it might be worth it to me. I have quite an extensive video game collection and this television is one of the highlights. I suppose it's possible that some capacitors my need changing because it's from 1997, but whatever you think is best.
