I'm impressed that you're only on your 7th increment save for this rig. I'm so paranoid about messing up, I looked at my file name and saw at the end ".065.mb"

This is a very simple rig so I could rig it quickly if I wasn't doing the video. But it's always better to save more than to crash and lose your work. You'll be glad you save specially in a professional studio.

Make sure you selected the root joint then the model. Follow the settings in the menu. Or let me know your exact settings.

Hello...i have a problem after i bind the Joints with the surface...when i select the root ctrl , or any other ctrls and move it , it just moves the rings {all the Ctrls} the joints dose not move , they only rotate correct. I enjoy your tutorials!! Thank you!

When I rigged my horse, seemingly random parts of the horse would be connected to random joints. For example, after binding the rig to the model, when I rotate the back legs, parts of the head - on the other end of the model - would move with it. Virtually every single joint is behaving this way for me. I've been working to edit each one, which is quite tedious. When you first use the smooth bind in this video, everything is pretty good aside from the jaw. Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated =)

This is somewhat normal when binding to any mesh. You can play with the Max Influence and Dropoff Rate in your binding options. If you set those too high one joint will move other parts of your model and cause you to do a bit more work than you have to. Try and set it low so that it only moves in areas you want.

Okay, thank you! This is very helpful - I went back and this time it's not a total mess :P One more question: When I mirror joints from one side of the horse to the other, the orientation of the mirrored joints is messed up, even if I mirror with Behavior and not Orientation. It doesn't really matter too much for my horse, but I was also wondering because I am having problems mirroring skin weights elsewhere. If I have half a rig skinned to half a model and I mirror the model, both sides of the model move with the controllers, but everything has to be symmetrical (working how Behavior is supposed to work). Is it possible for me to skin half the [rig + model] and then mirror the [rig + model] so that I can move one half of my model independent of the other half after skinning?

Yes, you should be able to only paint the weights on one side of your model, then just mirror over the weights. You need to make sure you mirror your weights across the correct axes plane XY or YZ typically. Depends on which way you modeled your horse. You will also need to play with the mirror skin weights tool settings. I do remember previous versions of Maya were buggy when mirroring skin weight. Version 2015 and lower. But for a horse the joint orientation won't matter so much since the legs are all IK. BUT, it's still a good practice to orient your joints no matter what!

I've just resumed from my rig, when I go to rotate joints it doesn't rotate the actual join like it used to, but instead the connection to the joints themselves are actually just spinning around and around; whereas before the joints themselves were working properly. Any advice or answers anybody? D:

Was the file saved correctly before you closed it? If it was working fine and now its not, maybe it didn't save. Have you tried constraining the controllers to the joints again? If it works now, then probably your scene didn't save.

Some work and others do not, I'll try re-constraining them all again - thanks for all the help!

Pencil Heart Remember you can always verify if you have a constraint from the controller to the joint by opening the Outliner Window and looking for the constraint (Red exclamation mark). Then in the Channel Box you can see what it's connected to. If you don't see the red exclamation mark in the Outliner Window, then you don't have a constraint.

That's amazing, a lot makes sense now Haha, I've ended up re rigging from the start and not having my model so complicated! If you could answer this that'd be awesome; I have four IK handles on my model for its legs, when I freeze transform the values don't go back to zero; is there another way during animation where these can be snapped back to normal without the use of freeze transform? Thanks ever so much again and I know this tip to check constraints will be coming in handy for the future!

Pencil Heart You can't freeze transformations on an IK handle. There is no need to because you'll end up creating a controller that should move the IK Handle. Only the controller would need a freeze transformation not the IK handle.

The teeth and the eyes of the shark are moving separately. I combined the mesh but they are still separate.

Did you parent them to the head joint.

AnimationMethods I tried but the teeth move separately from the jaw. I know this can be fixed after skinning the shark but in your video they move with it right away.

Victoria Hristova Yes. I selected the teeth then the jaw and parent them to the jaw. How did you do it?

Question! My controllers can rotate joints, but cant MOVE them, any solution for this?
@AnimationMethods
5 жыл бұрын
These joints are only meant to rotate as we're adding Orient constraints. Which means, they only connect the rotation from control to joints. If you want to translate them then only the Root joint can do so because it has Parent Constraint. Unless you have an IK setup on the joints no other joints can translate with this setup.

AnimationMethods Thank You for the answer! (I asked because I realised I done some mistake with animal model first at all, I didn’t know what jaw suppose to be slightly open, not widely open, so now I can’t close it unless I edit my model)

Press ctrl+b to change the background color. Maybe your background color is the same as the selection color so you can't see it.
