Learn how to properly season a cast iron skillet, and even how to restore a cast iron pan that has started to rust with this in depth seasoning tutorial.
If you treat your cast iron right, you can end up with a really good pan, that is nontoxic, nonstick, and just gets better, year after year, for the rest of your life! A pan that is so durable, it can even be passed down to future generations. But first, you’ve got to start out by seasoning it.
What is seasoning?
Seasoning is the process of oil baking onto the surface of your cast iron. It protects the pans from rust, makes them more nonstick, and makes equip to last for years to come. It can be done a few times a year for pan maintenance, with a brand new cast iron to help it along in its cooking performance, or to a cast iron that has started to rust.
The process is pretty straightforward.
If the cast iron is rusty, start by scrubbing out the rust with a pan scraper or steel wool to remove as much as you can.
If there is no rust, wash it as normal with a small amount of soap. If there is food stuck on it You can fill it with a small amount of water and simmer it for 3-5 minutes to help get the food off.
Dry the pan with a dish cloth or paper towel, and don’t worry if there’s some black residue on it after wiping the pan down. That is just a small amount of seasoning coming off and is nothing to worry about.
Next, you need to choose your oil. The manufacturer recommends using one of the oils listed in the video for the seasoning process. I will be using extra virgin olive oil.
For this, I like to pour a small amount of oil into the pan and use a paper towel to scrub around the pan and cover the entire thing. The inside the outside the bottom of the handle. Just make sure that there’s not excess oil that would drip off but that the pan is evenly coated in a very thin layer. I’m going to wipe it with a clean paper towel one more time to make sure that I didn’t apply too much. If you do put too much, the pan can become sticky. Which really is the opposite of what we want.
Then pre heat your oven to 450-500 degrees. Place a baking sheet on the bottom rack to catch any excess oil. And place the cast iron upside down in the oven. Bake for one hour. Allow it to cool. And woulah. You have a perfectly seasoned cast iron.
You can choose to repeat this process, or not.
But no matter what, whatever you do, make sure to follow these steps every time you clean your cast iron
After washing your pan, dry it completely with a paper towel or dish cloth. I like to heat mine up on the stove to help this process along. And then rub down the entire pan with a thin layer of oil. This will prevent rust from ever forming, and keep your pan in the best condition. And it really only takes a minute.
