If you have a guitar you really love the feel of the action, measure that and try to match it. Obviously guitars are different and you can only get some guitars so low before you have technical issues but it’s a good place to start.

Action is a personal preference. In terms of a good place to start, 5/64″ at the 12th fret for the low E string, measured from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string, 3/64″ for the high E string, measured in the same way.

To me, 5-6/64 on low E is pretty bad and unplayable, unless you just want to rip open chords on this axe. Usually going for 4/64 on low E and 3/64 on high E, which most low-midrange guitars (say 350$ and up) can handle easily out of the box without any fretwork or touch-ups, just with correct setup and neck relief.
@DoesItDoom

What tuning are you playing in? I can get numbers like that to work in E-std, but no way is that going to work in something like G-std.

@@DoesItDoom Not my can of worms, I usually play in standard tuning. Elixir Optiwebs in 10-46 on 24.75" scale, 9-42 on 25.5". On those gauges it'll get you to drop D/D std in a pinch, but any lower I'd go with heavier gauge strings and probably raise the action a bit to compensate for heavy picking. I guess it all comes down to the picking technique, but on the flip side distortion tends to hide a lot of accidental fret buzz.

@brooke1639 They're just as precise as anything else in use. Just bc you don't understand them well doesn't mean they aren't. All sorts of things are engineered and designed using this exact system, and they all need very exact and specific measurements.
