Please make more of these guides explaining common systems in these types of games. This one is really helpful

I'm really new to turn based over all and I was actually trying to find tutorials like this to try to get better at the games so I can actually play stuff I like the story of but the game style doesn't fit me. Like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and plenty others. Thanks for this. It'll be cool to do maybe more videos on other parts that can help build your turn-based game even stronger and honestly I'm sure doing a dissection of other game types like this would be good for others too. But in general you got a new subscriber and thank you for making this. Honestly most of the stuff I see is for helping developers make better turn based games than helping new players get better at playing them without feeling like you have to grind yourself over leveled to stand a chance or something.

I am recent convert to turn based CRPGs, so this was quite informative. I knew some of the concept, maybe not always explicitly, but they were somewhere at the back of my head.

I first got hip to this concept with older RPGs on the Genesis (Shining in the Darkness) and SNES (The 7th Saga) almost 20 years ago (!). It was much more pronounced in the latter game, where (on top of its notorious difficulty in the western localization) random encounters started getting more dangerous than most boss fights because getting jumped by 3 strong enemies (instead of one stronger enemy) against a 1-or-2 member party meant you had to deal with 3 sets of attacks/abilities every turn you did not kill something. Made even worse if the enemy party had multiple monsters capable of healing/reviving to reset your progress or instant death spells that could get lucky.

It seems so intuitive to me right now, but I've likely learned this in XCOM (and Time Zero, the one turn-based game I've played before XCOM, but there it was mostly actions of one character). And, curiously enough, in a deckbuilder/card game Tyrant Unleashed. That's probably where the deepest understanding of the concept comes in for me. (Yes, I've also played that one before XCOM.) A lot of abilities there were focused on making an enemy skip a turn, or attacking twice, or deploying your next card faster... And it was very obvious how much these things affect the final outcome.

In games like Solasta you can use Surprise as a way to steal turns from an enemy, too.

Been playing TB-RPGs for 20+ years... now I know why I'm still no good... too much focus on damage, and not on action pts. Thanks for the insight

Thank you for this (2 years ago I see). You specifically have inspired me to try harder to delve into these types of games, good lord am I horrid. I tried looking up “crpg tips and tricks” helpful guides, but everything seems to be game-specific. (Helpful for the game, but not necessarily for the genre beginner.) Anyway, if you see this, thanks again! If you ever imagine a revisit and refreshment of the concept would be a helpful current-day channel video, I’m sure far more subscribers than myself would be all thankful eyes & ears. Be well!

I love how I tried searching for how to get better at turn based strategy games, and instead youtube directed me here. Thanks youtube, I totally needed to learn how to play xcom when I asked for something on games like civ 6 and endless legend.

Lol try 4x strategy or grand strategy as search terms. Turn based strategy is gonna bring up mostly TRPGs which are a different genre.

Also, don't discredit Uno, a game literally _about_ action economy, from being able to benefit from action economy. In Uno, you literally win by being able to take more actions (play more cards) or making your opponents skip actions (make them unable to play a card, or make them skip turn) or giving them more actions to make (putting more cards into their hand).

I want to wander in a little bit of off-topic in this comment, because I wanted to talk about why FF is moving away from a turn based system, despite other series finding success in it (like the titles you constantly review in your videos): Yakuza like a Dragon has sold more than 490,000 copies (as reported on October 2022). Dragon Quest XI has sold over 6.5 million copies. Persona 5 has sold 8.3 million units globally but that is including the original version, the Royal version (3.3 million across all platforms), Persona 5 Strikers and P5: Dancing in Starlight. For those series which until now they have a more niche franchise, that is huge and impressive numbers in comparisson. But for a more mainstream series like FF that has a massive budget, which FF XV has sold 10 million despite all its problems and beign in way less platforms (like Nintendo Switch) not so much. I am not saying that a turn-based FF game with a AAA budget could be done in the future (or a CRPG for that matter), but now it may not be the right time. I love turn based combat, but I also have to accept its niche place in the industry. Will that change in the future? Maybe, as I have seen crazier things happen in this industry.

I'm playing Original Sin 2 late to the party even PS4 ...In act 4 no spoilers to people who haven't played the game but two of my characters wear Devourer and Contamination armour , my main character is a unded elf who's a necromancer so summoning is definitely OP ...Nearly completed the game.

In my opinion, it should be possible to choose between RTwP and turn-based combat, as they solved in Pathfinder, for example. Additionally, there was the possibility to set the AI of the character. For me, turn-based combat kills the immersion in the game and is simply boring. In addition, I am addicted to Action Points, so sometimes I lose a character senselessly.

Also a good point having a balanced group , for example in Original Sin 2 you have a tank , archer , rogue and mage as your 4 characters don't have like 3 rogues and a tank the balance isn't there .
