I’m not sure of your climates but in my zone 7a Long Island US once the blooms begin to fade and the plant starts to look sad leaves browning etc, I plant them in the ground for the winter leaving all the growth on them. The growth will die but most of the time you may begin to see new growth beginning from the surface. Not always 100% but maybe in my experience about 75-80% success. In spring you will begin to see growth. That’s when I dig them up, remove some of the root ball and repot with fresh soil. I continually pinch them back until mid July then let them grow until they bloom again. I will also take side shoots for making new plants. This year I am leaving a lot of them in the ground to see how well they do instead of potting them up. Two years ago I had one in a pot that I stuck in the ground for winter. It grew so well and the roots were so thick I could not remove the pot. ThAt fall the plant grew about 2 feet tall and about 2.5feet in diameter. It was huge with an entire canopy of blooms. It was so heavy I had to tie it to a stake. This wasn’t the first time either. So try ground growing them over the winter or in your climate during the non blooming months.
