Airplay from Mac to Mac reminds me of how I used Macs in a teaching lab of a dozen Mac computers way back in the 1980s using 128K classic Macs. It was quite easy then and very fast to show the active screen of my teaching Mac to any Mac in the lab or show any student's Mac to any other Mac in the lab-and any student could take control of any Mac, using a keyboard and mouse. It was useful to show a student's Mac onto the room projector so all students could see and work with a student who was having a problem or who found a unique solution. It's nice to know that nearly ~35 years later you can use Airplay to do much the same thing on modern computers with a hundreds of times faster processors and networks.

Very, very good explanation of all the options. One thing you forgot: this is not just a feature of macOS Monterey, but depends on the model of one's iMac - iMac 2017s, for example, can't do AirPlay at all, even with Monterey installed. This should be made clear and Apple should say so on their website (which they don't) and have the Tech Support people know this (they don't).

The app connects to the iOS device and then immediately drops the connection, over and over. I took my MacBook Pro to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and they tested everything and told me it's not a hardware problem but a problem with bluetooth and the M1 Macs running Monterey. Also, I'm running Monterey on an older Intel MacBook Pro and none of these problems are occurring, with Zoom or 1Keyboard, and much else.

First, it appears that the monitor machine will only work as a monitor. You can’t have it running programs at the same time. Also, I can’t seem to get my colorimeter to tune the second machine’s display because it wants me to go into settings to change the brightness. Finally, the screensaver won’t start on its own and if I start it manually, it won’t put the monitors to sleep, the screensaver just runs continuously until I manually move the mouse or press a key.

This may be a cool feature but there seem to be problems as well. I have a new M1 MacBook Pro and current iOS devices (e.g. iPad mini and iPhone 13 Mac). I can do the airplay sharing of the iOS devices with the Mac, no problem but no longer can I see an iOS device in its own window on the Mac; it takes over the whole screen. That's what you want in some cases but when recording a screencast, sometimes I want the iOS device to appear in a window (as it does here in Gary's screencast recording) -- I can no longer get that to happen. Also, sharing iOS devices no longer appears to work with Zoom. I keep getting errors from Zoom when I try to 'share' an iOS device. It says to connect using Screen Mirroing and select the MacBook Pro Zoom link but when I do that I keep getting errors and the sharing doesn't happen. I took my MacBook Pro to the Genius Bar at the local Apple Store and they said there is a problem with the new M1 Macs and Bluetooth, an incompatibility. I've seen a lot of complaints by users but I've seen no other admission by Apple of a problem.

@rcrutcher

Those of you having trouble with Zoom and sharing an iOS device, try just connecting your iOS device to your Mac via Bluetooth. What happens with my machine is the iOS device can't find the Mac on the list of Bluetooth devices OR if the Mac shows up on the list, the iOS device establishes a bluetooth connection and then the connection gets dropped: Connected....then....Disconnected. It's very reproducible and it's what I showed the Apple Geniuses, they tested everything, and then told me the problem is an incompatibility with bluetooth for M1 Macs running Monterey.
