Excellent info Sir. Thanks from a relatively new cyclist. Thanks as well to your commenters here who explained the need to dial the wrench back to zero after use. I had no idea.

Ok, pro-bolt tightener here. Torque is applied to tension the fastener and apply a clamping force between two fixed points, be they a seat post clamp, a brake cable clamp or in my profession 15,000 psi API bolted flanges on 600 ton subsea blowout preventers. The same rules apply. Always make sure that the threads are clean as well as any load bearing shoulders or surfaces - this reduces the chance of having to overcome added friction. If the manufacturer recommends a particular thread lubricant for the torque figure then use that lubricant. There is a big difference between light mineral oil and anything with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) in it, which is usually any lubricant with 'moly' in its name. The reduction in coefficient of friction when using lubs can mean the difference in applying too much or too little torque and thereby the applied tension or preload in the fastener. As far as I'm aware, most fasteners used on bikes are tightened without lubricant though I'm sure there are exceptions. But always check the manual for the recommended requirements. Torque wrenches do need calibration, however for small in/lb and less than 20 Nm wrenches, unless it is a high-end instrument it's probably not an issue you need to worry about. Just back the tension off after use and keep it in its box. Don't get too wrapped up in the tech, lab results have shown that up to 70% of the torque applied is lost when actual bolt tension is measured which is why most critical fasteners in industry are now hydraulically tensioned and not torqued to apply preload. I'm pretty sure the bike manufacturers supply these figures so that you don't apply so much torque you either strip the thread or stretch the fastener but still get the bolt tight enough to do its job. I always take a multi-tool on the road so if anything does come loose - hey presto I've got an allen key! As always a great video Leonard! How can I get one of those Jolly-Good-Velo cycling shirts to Brazil?

The problem with fine thread especially alloys is the the risks of over tensioning. I'm not a fan of using Lube on fasteners apart from thread lock in some applications. The only time I've applied oil is if I'm tapping a thread or cleaning up a thread. Many bolts come coated with a dry lubricant/thread lock nowadays especially equipment exposed to outside elements.

Not wishing to sound too nerdy but I couldn’t help but notice you have quite a steerer chimney above the stem. From a safety perspective I hope you have a long expander bolt in the steerer tube that goes down to at a minimum where both pinch bolts on the stem are to provide the necessary structural integrity. If not then it might be worth considering either getting a longer expander bolt or alternatively getting the steerer cut down to match the stem top height. Just finished my own first ground up build in many years and last time was before a-head headsets so had to research all the potential pitfalls hence the tip ☺

My torque wrench starts at 25nm but of course it's for my cars. I have been riding for 45 years and thankfully have never had an essential bolt come loose. But of course the tightening is guesswork. But in my case, it's good guess work ( I think!) because of a lot of amateur experience in tightening bolts on cars and other mechanical contrivances. I think you get a feel for these things. However, my frames are all aluminium and not carbon and I would not trust my self to deal with a carbon bike without a torque wrench. But whether carbon or alloy, I would heartily recommend everyone who does not have experience of mechanical matters to invest in a wrench. It might be a life-saver.

When I got my 1/4" torque wrench I noticed many of the bolts were specced at 5-8Nm and , like yours, the tool began at 5Nm. Not being a trusting sort that made me uncomfortable and I have dedicated 2-20 and 4-5-6 Nm wrenches on my wish list.

I have quite a large torque wrench but it does go up in small increments. You can buy a simple torque wrench that used a type of strain gauge rod. Topeak make a good one for small money.

Nice coincidence - I bought a torque wrench last week. It was quite cheap, but still more expensive than most of my bikes cause I only by old, cheap bikes form Ebay to have something to fix and play with. Not sure if it makes much sense for the cheap aluminum spare parts I usually buy. I so far did not break anything by tightening the screws too much. But I for sure would use it on expensive bikes like Leonard is riding.

The correct way to use a click type torque wrench is to push or pull until it clicks, as you've shown, then release and repeat as many times as needed until the fastener no longer rotates, which you've not done.
@ridekernow
2 жыл бұрын
Sorry but that isn't actually right - you use until it clicks once and then you've reached your correct torque. If you do as you say, you are in danger of overtightening the bolt and potentially stripping the hex, the thread, or worse damaging the carbon. the only exception to this is on headset bolts, where there are two of them, and you need to alternate one, then the other, then back to the first - as tightening the other one has the effect of loosening the other one, but still you never turn it "until it no longer rotates", and that's dangerous advice.
