I was watching one of those hoarding shows a few years back. Now I understand an old man probably doesn't need 40 old TVs, but to lie to him and say they don't work anymore so he won't even save one is just wrong. Right now in my back "TV room" I have a digital converter box, DVD player, Atari 2600 and Nintendo 64...all connected to something that supposedly doesn't work but is still partying like it's 1999.

Greetings from the UK! I have watched your channel for about 5 years now but with my limited knowledge of electronics (always trying to pick things up as I go along though) I've always been more of someone that observes rather than comments, or does anything other than minor repairs... usually cassette players/recorders and radios. But the old 'analogue' tv was always my first love. 😃And channels such as yours - yours more than most, actually - has helped reignite my interest. Thank you!! At the start of the video you say that it's something that "...some of you may find silly..." Well, I love telling people I watch vintage tv shows and films on one of my little b/w sets! 😁Usually it's via a VCR hooked up directly to the aerial/antenna input but I also have two modulator boxes for the same function if I wish to get another going with a DVD player. Started doing this about 2 years ago and people are amazed when they see the things working lol. It's already given us here hundreds of hours viewing pleasure and I wished I'd have done it much sooner, as these things have always been a bit of a hobby and interest since I was in my teens in the 1980s. Kindest regards and good health to you, Ian.

@@kensmith5694 very true - RF (Radio Frequency) signals can be fickle things. In the 80s (and usually only around summer, to do with the atmospheric conditions) I found that with my small set-top antenna, to receive reception from out of the area... the station in question stayed on much later than what was in our locality and would show classic films very often, along with tv shows I'd wanted to see for a long time... well, resting the thing on the floor would pick up a viewable picture, with less fading than on a windowsill or anything. Must have been because I was getting the signal reflected from hills and structures in the distance as UHF (our original VHF services had ended by then) can have its own strange ideas, even though it really should travel 'line of sight' from the transmitter. 😄So yes, very good idea to try different locations for it if you can and are not able to rig something outside.

When the switch to digital happened, I didn't notice. I was on DirecTV . I could have got 2 free converter boxes, I had the "coupons", but didn't use them, and they expired. Plus, my flat screen tv was digital ready anyway. In 2012, I stopped paying to watch commercials, and hooked the outside antenna to the TV, and it worked with the 1981 antenna! However, I couldn't record programs on my DVD recorder, because it has an analog tuner. So, I got a converter box for it. I switched my TV back to standard analog input, too, so I could play DVD'S and videotapes on it. (I'm using the 75 ohm connections) Sure, there are other ways to hook it up, but this works fine. I was pleasantly surprised how good digital ota broadcasts are. No electrical interference. Pristine picture. As long as the signal was good enough.

You still can, but it would need a converter box if your local broadcast towers are your provider or a cable/satellite subscription. Also, most likely being a CRT model, it would be monstrously heavy! A modern LCD or LED model weighs less than a tenth what a console CRT TV would for the same screen size. Also, I beg to differ about our ATSC TV sets being boring per se because they can open a whole new window into streaming content by their capability of connecting to the internet. But overall, yes, ATSC TV is very boring indeed because you either have the signal or not. There is no in between like there was with analog, where even if the picture was a little fuzzy, you could still follow what was happening.

Here in the UK, when I first heard about the analog switch off, I thought it was only in the UK, and only the 5 (yes, only 5) analog channels you could pick up via an antenna. By then we were all using set-top boxes giving us many channels so I thought the TV companies had just thought "well, everyone's using set top boxes now to receive TV stations, we might just as well shut down the old transmitters, no-ones using them anymore". I did not know that this would also apply to analog cable TV and analog satellite TV. We had to go from using an analog cable TV top box to a digital one. I still have the cable line going into the house, which is now used for internet and phone.

Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. Love the old BW TV's. I completely agree with you about antennas. I have heard from people that they have been told they needed digital antennas. It was the same when they used to talk about colour antennas when colour TV first started. sadly, a lot of people believed it all and wasted their money. DTV DX is far more difficult to receive than analogue TV DX. Also, here in Australia, our DTV channels only cover Band 3 VHF and Bands 4 and 5 UHF. We used to have Band 1 analogue TV, but Band 1 has never been used for DTV here unfortunately. Digital Set Top Boxes are becoming more difficult to find here these days. We bought a number of them, when they were available. Also, our DTV started off as MPEG-2 and our channels are gradually changing to MPEG-4. This is also not backward compatible and many people have had to replace their expensive digital Tv's, due to them not being able to receive MPEG-4. years ago, we used to have a TV that had a 300 ohm connection for VHF and a 75 ohm connection for UHF. Fortunately, I was able to purchase a converter plug to fit it up. Incidentally, when there are clouds, it is quite common that several of our local DTV channels disappear. This never happened with analogue.
@r.severn7479

We in the rural areas of the U.S. really got shafted in the digital conversion, and shafted even worse in the "repack" a couple of years ago. Many smaller stations sold their spectrum and moved to a pitiful low power channel that's only good for a few miles. We have some local channels that only work in winter when the trees lose their leaves. Conversely, I can also get some channels from 40 miles away at the back of the house and on rooms on one side of the house on second floor. The antenna mapping sites online say I should not be even able to pick those up with simple indoor antennas, but they are usually clear even with leaves on the trees. But to switch to digital and then also weaken the signals was truly a dirty deal for those of us in rural areas.
@RGC198
8 ай бұрын
Digital TV also had a repack here in Australia, when UHF Channels 52 to Ch 69 were all sold to other services and many channels were moved. Also, in some areas the analogue TV channels were removed and not replaced at all, leaving views there to invest in expensive cable and satellite systems to continue to even have TV at all. This was especially prevalent in New Zealand, where only the largest populated areas were given any terrestrial digital TV. The entire venture was just to make money and no thought was given to the general public at all. Finally, here in Australia, due to DTV being originally introduced as MPEG-2, many digital TV and boxes are not made to cover the current changes to MPEG-4 DTV broadcasting. Hence, many TV receivers now have to be replaced.

Actually, our free to air terrestrial DTV includes main channels and sub-channels sharing each frequency. In Melbourne alone we have about 20 channels to choose from. Some of the newer DTV receivers include KZitem and Netflix along with various streams, which all main DTV channels provide. Unfortunately, Australian TV channels are now all networked, which means that no matter where we are in Australia, we have mostly the same programming choice on each of the channels, rather than have individual TV broadcasters in every location, as it was back years ago.

There are two things I think should be added. First, converter boxes often have their own volume control which is separate from the TV's own volume control. If the TV is quiet even on max volume you will need to use the box's remote to put its volume up. The second thing is that there are two channel choices (3 and 4) because one may have more interference. If there is interference or snow in the picture you might want to change both the box and TV from 3 to 4 (or vice versa) to see if the picture quality improves. This may require re-adjustment of fine tuning if the TV is older.

Radiotvphononut: Despite what we were told was one of the reasons for the TV analog to digital transition - to free up and auction off broadcast spectrum to cellular communications providers - I still believe there was an additional, less honest reason for it: To make consumers buy more TVs! CRT-based sets, you see, had gotten so reliable and economical by the 1980s and 1990s, that in theory you could own one for life. So where's the profit in that? Well, the electronics industry, in partnership with the government, decided to set a date for an all digital broadcast mandate in this country. And the way they documented this to the public cast it in the tone that their old style TVs would be useless after 2009, despite the CECB (coupon eligible converter box) program launched the year before. Yes, I do consider "helping bail out the electronics industry" to be one of the biggest reason for digital broadcast and digital TVs in the first place. Call me a conspiracy nut, but I'm sticking to that version of things.
@realSamAndrew

That is a viable theory, but in either case, you still have, had, and will always have, that core of consumers that always want the latest and greatest. Given the new HD format, large flat screens that you could hang on the wall, digital signals and higher quality, most would have been buying a new TV every few years anyway, as they do today, and have always done with cars.

Analog TVs Are More Durable.

They were not intended to be simply disposed with if and when a minor (or even major, like the crt) component or components failed, yes. 😃 The 40-50 year old sets I have here - six in total although one I have never had working properly, so I'm not sure about that one... all have very good pictures on them because those crts have lasted and lasted, as b/w ones very commonly just go on almost forever. But one is colour and that is a beautiful picture as well (b/w tubes being much simpler things has a lot to do with it.) Probably ones made after a certain time are far more reliable although there are exceptions to this, most often from manufacturer to manufacturer. Being that they are in some cases just about impossible to find replacements for today, that is very good news indeed! And about 95-99% of the rest of them are parts that are still readily available too because they were common to many other devices. The one thing to be cautious of as with any vintage electronics though is especially when it's not been used for long periods and this can be decades, thinking about it. Although not easy now to get an 'expert' to look at these things, for safety's sake it some (fairly - to anyone who understands electronics reasonably well) basic work should be done on the set initially. But this is why people get into the hobby and it is very rewarding and useful too. There are some excellent forms online for this where people can guide someone through. I could do with perhaps doing more work on some that I have - like I just mentioned - but have seen the results of things going 'pop' and filling the room full of smoke (usually on YT videos thankfully lol) so if I have to leave the room for more than a handful of seconds, I will make sure the thing is switched off. 😂

The same thing happened in the u.k, The quality was utter crap in comparison to the analog system. 625 line tv sets were worth paying a t.v license, but after the shitbags killed the analog system i gave up on tv. And the govenment sold the uhf airwaves.

I’m just wondering what we will do then ASTC 1.0 shuts down and ASTC 3.0 takes over. Current shut down date is 2027 there will obviously be converter boxes for modern TV’s with HDMI inputs but what about the old analog TV’s.

there is no 2027 shutdown date. that;s the date atsc 3 emitters can presumably shut down their legacy atsc signals at will

I don't think ATSC 1.0 is going anywhere anytime soon, if at all. As far as 3.0, some manufacturers have taken such tuners out of their new set designs.

I have the exact same radioshack rf modulator and it was hooked in my bed room to a 1985 Citizen colour tv but it had a problem. My cable tv i had in there , or the box (Bell Canada) never actualy shuts off it just goes into a never ending scroll of ads for crappy tv or movies when you "shut it off". The problem? well the box never stopped sending a signal so the rf modulator was running 24/7. I put a stop to that by routing it through a dvd vcr combo unit but that is something to consider if someone was to hook up cable to an old set. My living room tv that is a 20" set from 1986 and has mono audio and composite video and i route the cable box through a zenith vhs vcr form the 80s to tape tv shows so that is also somthing that can be done if finding a rf modulator is an issue.
