This was extremely helpful! I've been working with photoshop for years (self-taught by clicking around), but I never used the mask functions. It's great to see what they do! I found the stock image and followed along with you. Oddly enough (and eerily enough) I was looking at a drawing tablet to buy today, and fellow artists suggested the Intuos. I saw that it was your affiliated link, so I bought one!

Hey thanks for another good tutorial, it's appreciated ^^ What I'd like to know is also what we can (and can't) do with the different layers in PS and also which one to use and why. I see you use a transparent layer often and when I was in photography school we didn't really use them (yah I'm that old lol) so when I began to, I couldn't do some things I was used to on a background copy. I get better with time but that would help me a lot! You're a terrific teacher :)

If you need to use the same mask for more than 1 layer, create a folder then apply the mask to the folder. And then the contents of that folder will share the same mask. And if you need to make other masks of a layer within that folder, it will simply use the parent mask as a boundary. And since they touched on fill/adjustment layers also in this tutorial. If you want to create a different look throughout your work, merge items into a smart object. This way you can have a defined fill/adjustment layer affecting specific things in the smart object and have things nicely grouped. Then if you still want you can use a fill/adjustment layer on the entire image or in creative ways working with the other folder/layer masks. Its a bad habit to create multiple masks if they are similar. Instead of grouping them as a smart object or a folder and applying a mask to it. So start early and don't follow bad habits. If more than 1 layer using the same mask. Remember folder or smart object and apply the mask to it. Especially when you start working with many many layers 2+ layers constantly using the same mask will look not only messy, or even confusing, but will increase the .psd file size. While some may not care of the file size, making things nice and tiddy is a HUGE help when working on larger projects. So keep your work area clutter free! I will say you often have some ideas on things I never concerned with much in other tutorials and I am hardly a beginner. This is the main reason I watch them. I always seek new ways to do things or maybe even ways I never considered. Though its hard to train a old dog new tricks and having done design and art work since 1996. One thing I lack is the ability to vocalize my work style, and you do that very well. I can write about it pretty much, though with YT they want a speaker. I'd be just a monotone doll reading off a script I previously wrote just to help others follow along. Or I'd share what I've learned over the years.

It's not "either visible or invisible" !! The layer mask makes transparent the content of the layer (it corresponds to) with black color, makes it opaque with white and all the intermediate grayscale colors make it partially transparent respectively - the brightness of the color is proportional to the opacity. In other words it's like drawing with a transparency tool. Or with an eraser tool (which is also in general non-binary) .

Great tutorial, as always! I do have some questions about advanced use of layer masks. Is there an effective way to refine one so as to add an edge blur (in composite images)? Sometimes in my work I run across the issue of the halo effect after using the pen tool, but when I use the trick of "inverting the selection --- expand --- input values", it deletes from the image itself, especially if I've used the refine edge option (hair, for example). Then I have to make a selection, open a new layer, use the clone stamp to fill it back in, merge the layers, and it still looks bad. Thanks for your help, and keep up the good work!

Is the audio of this video straight from his lav mic? Or a combination of camera and lav because I'm hearing a lot of room echo in this audio. Your office must be huge. If this audio is just lav. Perhaps some sound flags in your setup could help reduce that echo in the audio.

Top notch video. Awesome. BUT, as usual with such videos, ONE extra sentence could have made this video SO much more helpful & complete, at 12:00 ("I am using keyboard shortcuts to speed the process") & ALL that was needed was to actually SAY what exactly that (now) secret shortcut was. So, maybe someone will tell me here??... or I will be left to hope maybe SOMEDAY I will figure it out. Thanks for the video btw.
