A far easier way to decoupage, is to paint on your glue and wait for it to dry. When it's completely dry, place your decoupage paper over the top, then place parchment paper on top. Use a small crafting iron or travel iron to iron the decoupage paper in place. A low heat setting will activate the glue and the paper will stick with no wrinkles and no bubbles. This eliminates the need for all this rubbing. Use a craft knife, not a palette knife to separate edges. Also, always iron creases out of the decoupage paper first. Try it!

WOW Jonathan!!! This is amazing. The work you did with the paint over the decoupage reminds me of an Impressionist painting, just lovely. The whole piece is absolutely beautiful. And it was really cool to see you using eye shadow around the little beetle 🪲 😄, I've been wondering for a while now if I could use browny/grey eye shadow on my pieces, especially as they have mica powder in them and I have plenty of eye shadows that would be perfect for adding shading to smaller areas, like your beetle. What sort of paint and varnish did you use on this piece? Did you say that you used Annie Sloan's paint? I tend to use the American brand Dixie Belle, because I love all their paint colours. Thank you so much for sharing this epic video with us. I always learn a lot from you. Love from Amanda Jones in Australia

Cannot believe I watched the whole thing from beginning to end. I am wondering what happens to the white part of napkin on the edges, does that disappear???? Jonathan, WHAT do you think of doing an light amber colored crackle (like an old oil painting) over the entire piece? Pretty sure you just use elmer's glue, let it dry then paint a very thin glaze over that, as it dries it creates the crackled effect. The non-decoupaged part seems to look too new "just painted", compared to the decoupaged areas. Anyway, extremely great tutorial and demonstration and result. You have a good voice and accent to this American, almost sounds Scottish, whatever, I enjoyed this. Thanks.

Hello again, Jonathon. The trompe l'oeil beetle with the shadow made of eye shadow deserves a chef's kiss for both whimsy and ingenuity. You've made me want to go shopping for make-up. I know better than to borrow some from the wife. I'm pretty sure that would end in a court battle for the dog. I love your running watercolor technique, as well. I'm amazed that the watercolor coat didn't require a varnish layer to protect it. I do prefer a wax topcoat anyway. Wood just seems happier under wax. How much water can mix with Annie Sloan without breaking the binding to the point of causing a flaking problem, or is that just never an issue with Annie? Next time someone asks me about decoupage, I am directing them to this video. I've never seen any more creative or with results that I find more aesthetically pleasing. Thank you for sharing your furniture art with the masses.

You did an amazing job on this piece and explaining how to do the process! I was with you up until you started slapping in the diluted paint and spraying it with water to get the colors to run down the piece...convinced that the piece was ruined....but as skeptical as I was, I continued watching, and was proven wrong, all the steps worked in concert with each other to end with a beautifully refinished item. Taking a ho-hum typical wood stained dresser to an eye catching original piece of functional art is quite the talent. Did you just leave the top surface finished in the base color? In your opinion would adding a corner of these napkins to the top be too much? I currently have 4 dressers and a captain's bed that I have picked up cheap at tag sales, that I want to refinish before putting into use, but have been hesitating because I am not 100% sure on exactly how I want them to look as the finished result. This video has just added another option to my growing list of possibilities!!

Too dark. I liked it better when it was a soft pink. You made it messy. I no longer like it. If I had the piece I would strip it and make it natural looking

Here in America what we do is we primer the wood first. If you do not put primer paint on first in a couple years the paint is going to start chipping off just a suggestion

You can take a liner brush with water and go around the napkin design and pull the excess away.

When I tear my napkins take a tiny paint brush and dip it in water & go around the design then it tears easier.

I’ve seen people, after removing the base layers, just run around the design area they want to keep with a tiny wet paintbrush to make a thin wet line, & any unwanted areas can very easily be detached.

TIP: when you have a layout you like, TAKE A PHOTO of it. There's nothing worse than standing there with a glued-up napkin and not remembering where you wanted to put it.

Stop. Stop, stop tape... that beetle is so funny. Especially as earlier I had read a funny comment from a Greek fan about wanting to swat it and they have roaches there in Greece. We have them in the south (USA) too---monster ones. When I read that I thought maybe you had them in your shop, Jonathan, and one was going to pop out on your piece during filming, lol. Now I see you're adding a bit of whimsy to the piece--love it and relieved you don't have roaches. Right?no roaches?😳...😂🤣😂🤣

Wow. What a transformation. Gorgeously stunning! I wonder if my husband would allow me to do this to a piece of his handmade furniture (?) Thanks for sharing, Jonathon. I like the wrinkles too. However, I would have chosen a butterfly over the bug. lol

Thank you for sharing all your painting Technics. Your tutorial is very inspiring. Very striking piece of work. This is not a criticism, it is only an opinion. I love these type of practical art, HOWEVER, as you keep saying there is need of a lot patient , creativity and MONEY for all the materials in order to achieve something similar to your painted sideboard. I have seen so, so,so many pieces of furniture thrown to my local rubbish tip. People think it is very easy to do it but I IS NOT. Annie Sloan is making good money with this type of adverts... My advise if try making your own chalk paint. There are hundreds of videos teaching similar technics and even teaching how to make your personalised decoupage chalk paint etc. Just saying......

Don’t worry I won’t take it as a criticism I think it’s a great conversation to be had and I am all for creating your own versions of whatever materials you need to make the end result be fabulous obviously I’m a big fan of Annie Sloan chalk paint I’ve used it for many years and love it I have experimented with creating my own version and had some good success with that I suppose it’s just reaching for the thing that you love using . And of course I think budget is really important I’m definitely up for saving where you can, i’d like to think that people that don’t use Annies paint can always convert the ideas and techniques involved using whatever product they wish. 😊❤️🙏
