It's actually kind of fun to work with because plumber's putty is considered a soft-set sealant. That means it will stay soft and pliable (like play-doh!) and not crack like silicone.
And you want a soft-set sealant in sink drain applications (where metal is the primary drain material) so future repairs are easier to make.
