Having remodeled several hundred bathrooms and kitchens it is one the easiest sealing jobs there is because you don't have to be spot on with the measurement and it cleans up so easily. The only suggestion I have is that I trim it with a razor blade to give it a clean finished look. I have fixed leaks in the past where someone cleaned the rim by hand and the putty was a little too thin and a weak spot was created resulting in a leak. It is one of those things that really isn't necessary yet does give a crisp finish and if you are doing it for someone else it's better to not have to go back for something so simple.

Good tutorial. Thanks. Gave thumbs up. Unless I missed the mention, one caveat to the plumbers putty. Do not use on acrylic tubs or sinks. Even Oatey says to use 100% silicone. Plumbers putty reacts with the acrylic rendering it brittle over time, creating cracks, hence leaks.

I would echo ‘Chris Graham’s’ comment here. Some Manufacturers warn against the use of plumbers putty with regards to possibly staining the finish, etc. I think Plumbers Putty was used much more in the past, and it has its applications, but good old GE Silicone/ Silicone II can’t be beat, where applicable! I’ve put in cabinets and other fixtures in some challenging installs, as well as countertops and splashes, and have had to go back and pull out or repair where the homeowner had damaged it, wanted a change, etc. and the stuff holds! Not so much experience in the realm of plumbing, but have talked and dealt with a few knowledgeable plumbers over the years. Good solid video Scott 👍👍👍✌🏻😁🇺🇸

There is 2 types of putty the older style that you shown and a newer white version that does not use oil. I used to use it on sink bottoms when dropping in sinks also used around bathroom tub/shower faucet tube ensuctions where they pass between the tiles. But like others may have said i replaced putty with fast dry ge silicone caulk because new sink/countertop and faucet manufactors don't want you to use putty anymore. Using a “snake” too large in diameter can sometimes cause the threads on either the top flange or on the tail piece(or split the plastic) to strip out trying to compress the thick putty. Been there, done that. I suggest using your judgement when making your snake, not too small but not too large. You can take it back apart and add more putty.

I've always used plumbers putty on kitchen sinks and bathtubs, but kind of sporadically on vanities. I figured the big rubber gasket would stop external links, which it does. Unfortunately, water gets under the chrome drain and creates a rusty ring that keeps coming back. Lesson learned.

My new vessel sink has a bit of a wonky drain. It is porcelain and probably defective right out of the kiln when made. So the drain assembly rocks a bit as its not level all the way around. A number of manufacturers of acrylic tubs and vanities do not recommend the use of plumber's putty for sealing drains. The putty contains petroleum distillates that react with the gloss layer of the acrylic. They recommend using 100% silicone caulk only.

@@EverydayHomeRepairs I suspect your right and I suspect it's a long term issue, but a tub install is anticipated to last for 20 years or much longer. Great video! Clear and concise. Thank you. One thing I'm running into however is one of these newer drain pipes where they give you an upper and lower rubber washer. To my surprise and disappointment they did weep and over a day a few drops would be seen. So my question is, would you use the putty with or without the washer. If I were to remove the washer it's just smooth steel, not segmented like the one you used. Thanks. Edit: as I needed to get this done, common sense kicked in and told me to throw away the rubber washer - duh 🙄... It worked perfectly. Thanks again for instilling the confidence I needed to get through this. Why the manufacturer doesn't give the DIY'er a few tips is beyond me...

From my experience as a licensed plumber for 36 years (yes, I’m old as dirt) I prefer 100% clear silicone . I haven’t used plumbers putty for at least 10 years or more. You won’t find it in my van. Putty will interact negatively with some materials….it will dry out in time. Silicone just seals better….and it will not become stiff in cold temperatures while stored in my work vehicle.
@hasserecht3678

silicone has a maintenance interval. So you have to replace it every couple years. No big deal but i'd prefer a proper gasket. Most quality sinks come with it. And if you don't get the dirt cheap crooked vanity tops they always properly seal.

Dude seriously. Water shedding is not water pressure. Can you fill the sink up immediately after setting pop up? Full to the overflow. Because that’s what the customer will do as soon as you leave. The worst they can do is pure hot water filling the sink. So I test hot water full in every bowl before leaving. What happens if your caulk pops a leak while still not cured ? That’s right. You get to find out how stupid it is to use 100% silicone. Or you get lucky and doesn’t leak 8 out of 10 times but customer changes mind in 2 weeks and that day you have 7 more service calls. Good luck with that. Putty in the right hands is 100% zero fail rate. Give that silicone to your greenhorn. See which is easier to train.

I've seen a few boards in an old house that had been patched up, where I'm pretty sure the wood filler they used was actually plumber's putty. It worked... not horribly, so long as it didn't need to be drilled (I discovered it when I went to hang something and needed to put a hole through this stuff, which definitely doesn't take drill bits or screws like actual wood filler should), but even apart from that, it didn't give as smooth and good-looking of a repair as proper wood filler would have.

Is it possible to overtighten it, causing the plumbers putty to be too thin and resulting in leaking? I think thatmay be why my new bathroom sink drain is still leaking, but am not sure.
