Handy for when I want to make loose parts from an object that I want to apply different materials on different faces. I found that I can not add different materials to different faces on a single object without 1st splitting the object up. this is the 1st time I have seen this modifier explain. So far I have been splitting my meshes up manually. thanks for the explanation. 👍👍👍👍

I wonder if you watched the panel line pro tutorial. It give a great use of this simple mod. Many thanks for your continuous help and videos. Thanks

wow Justin, I just happened to randomly see this video this morning. I always use auto smoothing but for the first time today encountered imported geometry were it would not work, however Edge Split did it perfectly. liked, subscribed:)

There is a cool trick when you follow Edge Split with Solidify and Bevel. You will get a separate panel for every face. VERY useful when making cabinets in archviz or hard surface modelling.

It's really awesome for Proximity Weight Paint + Cloth Physics!

Great little video, thanks for that! I find this modifier quite interesting, but not necessarily for shading related stuff. I can imagine using it during the mesh/geo modelling stage, to very quickly do things which might otherwise be quite tedious. For example, some time ago I asked myself how I would cut a complex mesh into two pieces, without losing any geometry. Like, imagine how easy it would be to cut a high poly UV sphere into two identical/non-symmetrical parts without losing geo; with this modifier it's easy and quick. All you have to do is mark your chosen edge loop as sharp, apply the modifier, then separate the two pieces of the mesh in edit mode. I'm looking forward to having a play with this. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Interesting application - I can see times where this might be valuable - that said, I'm not sure if there would be other ways to achieve this or not. Selecting the geometry and separating it might be more straightforward, but I'll be interested to see if you like this approach - thanks!

Great explanation! I wondered why you would use the edge split modifier since there were easier ways of achieving the goal!

Yeah I think for the most part it's more a legacy tool, but as long as it's in there, it's good to know what it does!

I tried the GPU acceleration for the SubSurf modifier for the first time today, and it said that GPU acceleration was disabled because I had "Auto Smooth" enabled. So I guess a use case for the Edge Split modifier could be if you wanted the functionality of auto smooth *and* GPU accelerated subsurf.

Now I'm wondering if there's a legit use case for this vs. auto smooth....?

@@TheCGEssentials Yeah, Blender is a gift where are all things that can’t makes damages and a thing like that surely can’t. Every gift that can’t make damages can’t be waste., in and outside Blender. 👍

Not at all - it's still a modifier in Blender, and people still wonder what it does. Plus, like another commenter said, there could be other applications for using the split function. As long as it's IN Blender, it's still worth talking about, but there are a lot of times where there are now better solutions
