A Director at a company I use to work for took his staff to lunch every week. He never contributed to the check but handled the money and kept the change. Great boss!

in the American south, or at least how I grew up, you'll be more likely to see both parties genuinely arguing that the other shouldn't pay a dollar and that "I've got this one"

Is Canada the only country where you can eat with someone and the server keeps track of who ordered what?

No, that goes for sweden as well, just say you are splitting the check. + In sweden you dont do tips unless its a fancy diner. Nobody tips for lunch. The restaurant has the responsibility to pay the waiters a fair salary.

No, this is very common in the US too. The problem is it’s equally as common as the 75 other ways that people approach this process depending on the group dynamic of who you’re dining with. There will always be that person who tries to take charge in either direction by saying to the server “No we’ll do one check to make it easy on you” and “Can we do separate checks” before the meal’s even started and anyone else has a chance to react. There is also now Venmo involved, which makes the “I’ll pay and just pay me back” more common. There’s also the power trippers amongst equal friends who just got a job and want to show their friends they’re doing well and be “generous.” There’s also the people who are legitimately being generous because they know they can afford it more than their friends. There’s also the business lunches where picking up the check is actually an important part of establishing the relationship between client and contractor. Etc, etc… it’s not different in Canada, these dynamics exist everywhere. It’s interpersonal relationships, not restaurants, that cause this. It’s just more noticeable when the transaction is like 5-10 minutes long of staring at each other across a table instead of a simple counter payment at any other business.

@@danieljohansson839 In Britain "splitting the bill" means that everyone pays the same amount, regardless of what they had. Which oftern leaves people who eat less to pay way more than they should. I dont understand that at all. Here we are used to paying for ourselves.

When I eat with my "friends", we always pay for what we ordered, we don't split it. But one time I had lunch with a friend, and she ordered something more expensive than mine, when "we" paid for the bill, I've told her I'd pay for it now because I need change, and she could pay me later or in a while... but she didn't, she casually just left like I volunteered to pay for her... I never confronted her about it though...

Someone's just clipped this from the whole 20-30 minute episode. It wasn't meant to end there.
