Thanks for sharing your excellent video on this topic! Another facet of remastering has been the jump to 4K in modern displays. The higher the resolution of the display, the worse most of the old, blocky (or N64 blurry) low-res textures look. While there is definitely an argument for preserving games *in amber* as-they-were-back-in-the-day, there are obvious technical issues with displaying low-res textures at such extreme scaling differences. (e.g. 240/320/480i up to 4K). Personally, I am glad that most (but certainly not all ::coughRockstarcough::) companies are making remasters a priority because it makes a huge step toward at least preserving games for the future. Games are a modern art form, and developers & publishers need to be thinking about game preservation and archiving. I’d rather have a great, or even good, remaster so I can revisit past games on 4K displays, versus not being able to play the game at all.

It is also important to note that sometimes the source code doesnt exist anymore which forces the developers to create the same game from nothing, maybe AI translate it from a rip. The infamous Silent Hill 2 & 3 HD-Remaster is an example off it, but also the reecent CronoCross rerelease. In the late 90s and early 2000 space on an HDD seemed to be so expansive, that devs wilingly choose to delete their master data. Espacially the PS1 games are a victim of this and the reason, why we have so little ports or (true) remaster (not remakes masked as remaster) of that time. And when we get a remaster, it is either a recretion like Silent Hill, where the devs choose comic sans for the city signs and forgot to imitate the limitations of the hardware back than, which resultet in no fog, or you get an AI interpretation of a rip of a final pressed copy of the game like with CronoCross, where the non native, compressed assets are upscaled, which results in a blurry and unfitting picture quality.
@skycloud4802
Жыл бұрын
Forgive me as I don't know much about code and games development. Could game code be read, hacked, and reverse engineered even without the master code? I was just suggesting as it has to be read or interpreted by the systems themselves, and the assets like sprites or FMV video are all there on disks or carts (albeit maybe compressed to save space).

The problem I have with the term 'remaster' when it comes to games, is that games already look the way they're supposed to whereas home video releases have usually been comprimised because of the technology at the time. A good home video should look as much as possible as the original theatrical release, whereas for instance Super Mario Bros. for Famicom is the original release. Usually good video game developers are aware of the hardware limitations and design the game play and graphics around them. Mario's original character design in Donkey Kong is one example and the other is the fog in Silent Hill 1.

One studio to keep an eye out for regarding remasters is Nightdive studios. Recent example being Quake. Their biggest project so far is the remake of System Shock. Which was really good, it's been one i've been waiting for. If you enjoy Immersive Sims, give it a try. I do like how they really stuck to it's origina's gameplay elements. They've been bought out by Atari. Whether that remains to be good or bad remains to be seen. Currently waiting for the enhanced edition of System Shock 2. I also hope they end up also remastering titles like Deus Ex or Thief.

Another thing to consider when talking about why people care about remasters is the availability of the original. There are plenty of Nintendo games that are unavailable to play officially. Things get lost, accidents happen, and there is a chance the old game was sold. A person may not be able to go back and play the games without the remaster.

Remastered games may be more prevalent now, but they have been around for decades. The quality varies, of course, because there will always be some fan base who will object to the modifications (if any) in a remaster. In other cases, some remasters don't even try. I hear people complain about the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (the SNES version from 1995, not the 3D trilogy) for good reason. That "remaster" from Tecmo retains the NES graphics on a 16-bit console, but it changes the music and the color of the health bar. Seriously, those are the only changes to the trilogy. That, to me, is a profound disappointment.

To answer your final question, remasters give us an opportunity to self reflect on how far we've come. They give us a chance to transport ourselves into the younger versions of ourselves and do things differently. Whether it be playing in a better way or playing for fun rather than to get the game over and done with, they make us appreciate the art more. And they are a good way for newcomers to experience beloved franchises.

Remasters is a good option because like you said, a lot of companies don’t have backwards compatibility as their features. It runs smoother if you want to experience for the first time like for example, I really wanted to get into the Uncharted series on the PS4 and my only option is buy the remasters. But In my opinion Backwards Compatibility shouldn’t be abandoned like that, I’m glad that Microsoft still has it on the Xbox is a breath of fresh air. If it wasn’t for that feature maybe I wouldn’t play Fallout New Vegas and the Mass Effect trilogy back in 2021. Plus putting it on the Series X is quite an upgrade. Seeing Red Dead Redemption on the Switch is downright horrible, where it charge you money for a game is 10+ years old. You could play that game on Series X with better visuals without charge. I’m not a fan of remasters because of small changes on visuals but if that’s the business strategy for game companies for people getting hooked on nostalgia then they’re doing it very well.

Technically remasters aren’t needed for better game performance. And backwards compatibility should be enough to make a game perform like remaster. But Sony and Xbox put limitations on backwards compatibility so that the new hardware doesn’t change the game’s performance. If I’m lying… than why is any computer company able to release a new graphics card or cpu and instantly make older games look a lot better. Consoles are computers. They use the same logic, so they should do the same thing.

It's like how a lot of recent source code leaks and decomps allow us to do things like Mario 64 PC, taking the original, tweaking it to run under something else, and recompiling it.

Why are so many people obsessed with remakes? I understand accessibility, but you do realize the game's plot, etc WILL change as a result of varying reasons? What was written in 201X might not be present today for example. See: Gaming censorship, companies forcing the devs to implement things unneeded because of ESG/DEI,etc. It will not turn out the same, or might turn out worse. There will not be a faithful adaptation. Just because its remade does not mean it will turn out good. Best to keep the original and not butcher things. I know not all remakes are bad, but most of them seem to be. None are a 1-1 copy with improved graphics, etc

Microsoft claims Xbox backwards compatibility on the one/series, which allows the Xbox 360/Xbox classic games to be played is as complete as it can be due to licensing constraints. As time passes, publishers or developers that had the rights to certain IPs, the licenses expire, and are not renewable. And the way Xbox chose to do it's emulation with a single bespoke emulator for each game, instead of a universal emulator, meant that each BC game needed to still have valid licenses for the IP in the game along with music rights too

Part answer to that philosophical: remasters allow multigenerational enjoyment of these game products... parent to kid or even grandparent to grandkid. Similar as it is almost normal that this happens in some artist concerts nowadays or young people even find 70s,80s or older music or movies on their own and like it. Caveat with this is remaster can be just cashcow already "money like god" publishers and further stagnate industry what happened turn of 90s and 2000s where they truly thought they had godlike powers to tell governments and customers, people what to do (using lawers and police machinery often illegally to threaten people).... and music was getting worse, constant remasters giving easy cushy jobs from 60s or 70s records and endless compilations. Nintendo seems to do well with their mario games but very bad with other IPs let alone 3rd party IPs. Do it right and that can be nice new gamer generation enjoying that franchise eager to wait new games for it.

Sony and Microsoft really are sloppy and just dumb. The ps3's special CPU was so bad the devs either eventually gave up on it or finished their games after an eternity. Even Sony's programmers admitted it was too complex. Ps3 almost killed Sony. Microsoft on the other hand came up with a brilliant idea to make people pay to play online games and had developed the Kinect which had almost killed them. If the ps3 CPU caused problems for ps4's backwards compatibility, there in lies another question. Why is there no backwards compability to play ps2 & ps1's games?

Why do we play/want remastered games....imo we want them so our kids can enjoy them with a fresh coat of paint & game companies remastered them so they can scope out the new players and their interests in a franchise too
@S5000Krad
Жыл бұрын
The answer is actually pretty simple kids. Money. All the money in the world. That's why they make the original versions of games shitty, and not future proof. If only they gave you the option on console versions to pick and choose the resolution and have an fps toggle. Then all these supposed remasters wouldn't even see the light of day. Uncharted lost legacy for example is nothing more than an increased resolution and unlocked fps. If you had that option in the original release of those 2 games, there would be zero reason for you to get that "remaster". Naturally sometimes games will have low rez textures. And then remastering makes sense. However even then, they usually use ai as a solution to upscale those textures, resulting in a horrible finish. And I don't even understand the need to change the visual design of the time. Battle for bikini bottom looked great back in the day. And still looks good. Instead of bringing you the original, with higher res and better fps, they decided to make it an oversaturated candy fest. Increased color doesn't mean better looking. Usually means worse. And without any sense of style and vision. What they did with diablo 2 is probably the best example on how to handle it. And quake 2 as well. Diablo 2 updates the visuals, and the fps. But also gives you the option of playing with the original look. The only missed opportunity basically is that they didn't increase the fps and rez of the original look. So it plays in maybe 25fps. So naturally everyone will play in 60 with modern visuals, cause it's more fluid. And they didn't add couch co-op support. Which is another missed opportunity. But quake 2 probably package wise did the best job possible.

The prevalence of remasters has certainly irked me over the years. It comes off as an easy and quick way to just take an old product, make it a bit more accessible and throw on a new coat of paint and tadaa you have a game that people love and praise. I have benefited from some remasters, like having more modern features in the mafia 2 game, or just having an excuse to replay saints row 3 for the 8th time. And i have had pleasant times with a few remakes, notable mafia 1 remake which was absolutely amazing. But i don't think i ever wanted any games to be remade or remastered. Of course the point of remasters and ports being a blurry line between the two makes what i said counter intuitive, as there are some games i'd absolutely love the ports of, like gta vice city stories which has been stuck on ps2 and psp. Now with the potential rumors of an oblivion remaster, i'm just worried about the team at skyblivion and everyone that worked on it getting overshadowed by an official product.

You show a lot of The Last of Us Part 1 here but it clashes with your definition "remaster = port" because it's not a port, they re-made everything from scratch re-using the old motion capture footage and audio for the cutscenes. Which makes it not a port. You said you'd talk about how publishers blurred the line between remasters and remake and I was waiting to hear your take on it, but it never came. It would have been interesting to tackle TLOU but also the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro trilogies too for example, which also we're remade from scratch.

Some of the technical terms dropped here are ~kinda correctly but rely on some shaky assumptions or connections (example: access to source code being followed up with a statement about model incompatibility. Both of these things might be true, but source code and a model's compatibility with the engine or renderer are not entirely related) If you're not aware of the game dev process I wouldn't parrot this information 1-to-1 back to someone. If you are, well, then I expect you already understand how these terms are being applied.

I never related them? I stated that having the original game's source code wouldn't solve every problem a developer ran into during the remastering process. Then highlighted a documented example of a developer encountering a problem that couldn't they couldn't solve just because they had the original game's source code. My point was to demonstrate that games are a multi-faceted medium and remastering them also requires extensive work on their visual component. If someone parrots that, they would just be...correct? If someone takes it out of context (which can happen even to things that are explained in excruciating detail), that's completely out of my hands.

I believe you’re wrong about your explanation, it’s not easier to just go with updated visuals than to try and recreate the old visuals. Most of the time they have the old visuals already and they try to reimagine it with updated visuals and make it look better.

Consoles are important in this aspect.... it eases entry for everyone to enter sometimes high entry games or genres on console.... all that hardwork of devs, testers, fans etc pays off on console and sometimes can give new life to previous years publisher neglegted otherwise good titles.

I personally love remasters and crave for more from games I yearn in hope to have remastered. It's frustrating and depressing how so many great games get left out without a remaster, sequel, remake, or reboot.

Remakes/remakes and Live Service games is what is killing the gaming industry .. STOP IT!

There are far more bad remasters than good remasters. That's because the term is very ambiguous. The cheapest team you can find running your IP through an AI upscaler can be classified as a "remaster" alongside something the original creator spent years with a dedicated team that try their hardest to translate all elements to a modern platform.

PBR could make old models out of place? lol I'm a game developer and this statement is false. PBR workflow have nothing to do with it.

Yes, PBR can absolutely make very old and low poly models look out of place and even older than they would if nothing else was done to them. A great example is GTA Definitive Edition where they use PBR but the models can't articulate any amount of detail and end up harming the game's presentation because of it.
