Hi Doug, thank you for the growing tip, about the vine going up instead of pointing down. I did not know that. Also I love the caterpillar at the end of your video it's awesome!!!

Hi Doug! Thank you so much for this very informative video. Unfortunately, my few hoyas aren't big enough to use a trellis like this, but hopefully some day..... You have some beautiful Hoyas. Thanks, again!

I have an unrelated question - do you recommend pruning your hoyas to encourage bushier growth? I have H. megalaster that sat dormant for ~9 months and is now putting out several glossy, gorgeous leaves from a single growing point. I am content to leave it be - but should I snip the growth point to encourage it to split into two? Or should I leave it be and wait for it to find other growth points on its own?

Hi Stephanie, you should absolutely leave your H. megalaster alone, and be very happy that it is finally growing for you. You will get to the point where this Hoya will only want to flower and will seemingly never put on another leaf; at that point, you may actually want to cut off peduncles to encourage more growth and less flowering.

Hi! Would you know if that bamboo hoop is hollow in the middle? I'm guessing it's not bamboo but rattan. I'm still looking for the best trellis for my vines.

Hi Doug, good vid! You seem to have a collection of Hoya's, could you recommend a strongly scented variety please?
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas

Hi Paul, Hoya lacunosa is a common variety that has a very strongly sweet scent. Hoya calycina has a powerfully sweet scent that will drive you crazy if all of the flowers open at once. I have one open now that is very powerful as well with a very strange name called H. sp. East of Thailand SRBR-JSNwf. If you can find it, the scent is very powerful.

Hi Doug, thank you for your very informative video! One slightly off-topic question, I always assumed as my house plants get bigger that I need to move them into bigger pots. I see that your Hoyas are in small pots. Do you have advice about this! Thank you!
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas
Жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel, It is funny that you say that as most people think that my pots are not small but big! Yes, typical houseplants the size of some of the Hoyas in this video would be in larger pots, but that would be sure death from root rot for Hoyas. I do regularly up-pot Hoyas, but they start out in very small pots and slowly move their way up. You have to remember that most Hoyas are epiphytic and can live on the bark of trees no longer being rooted in the ground. I have learned from many bad experiences that a pot that is too large is quick death for most Hoyas!

Doug, where did you get your bamboo hoops? Thanks!

+Qian Richardson Hi Qian, I have bought most of them Online at a place called A.M. Leonard. They call them Bamboo U-Shaped Trellis. Problem is they only sell in bundles of 100. If you want smaller quantities, you might try Ebay, or possibly Amazon.

Hi Doug, have you ever tested a teepee bamboo trellis with hoyas before? If so, what was your experience? I have a lot of young bamboo growing near my house and am tempted to create a teepee trellis for one of my pubicalyx.

Hi Laura, I have never tried a teepee trellis before, but I can't see why it would not work well, and think that it would be lovely. I say go for it, and I want to see it when you are finished!

Hi, Doug could you tell me where did you get the clip from?
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas

The bumblebee clip was discontinued a number of years ago and is no longer available. Here is where I used to get them: www.chulaorchids.com/plant-clips-and-supports.html There are dragonflies and butterflies, but no bumblebees.

How do you repot trellised hoyas?
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas
2 жыл бұрын
Generally I repot leaving the original trellis inside the pot and frequently I will add an additional larger trellis, or reinforce the one that was in the original pot.

Doug, what is the name and supplier again of those plastic clips? I'm having trouble finding them. Thanks!
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas
8 жыл бұрын
+Cindy Locher The supplier is chulaorchids.com but there are two bits of bad news, apparently they no longer make the bumble bee clips and Chula Orchids now has a $100 minimum on orders. They still have many different clips to choose from and have the best prices, but meeting the minimum is tough unless you need other supplies such as pots. You can also try Ebay as a potential source of clips. Doug

do they have to be trellised or can they be in a hanging basket?
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas

Many Hoyas love hanging baskets. A rule of thumb is that the small leafed varieties do better in baskets and the bigger leafed species probably would be easier to take care of trellised.
