I am basically a Baroque person, but this English Suite is so uplifting that I play it almost every day and know it by heart. I sing along and my little Chihuahua comes running over and knows Mommy is happy. Exquisite music. Thank you so much posting it MrVektrol

You know, outside the huge English choral tradition, Vaughn Williams symphonies and the incredible Tallis Fantasia, I think this piece puts Parry among the finest of the them.

My first exposure to this piece was from an LP I bought from the Musical Heritage Society, which featured Adrian Boult conducting this and the Lady Radnor Suite. I took to it immediately. That was over 40 years ago, and it has kept its beauty and freshness in my estimation. I think it is not an exaggeration to say that, in the category of lighter music, this is one of the most beautiful examples ever written.

This is music that if one were to tune into the wireless and hear it, within seconds you would say English. Easy, yes, but Parry? I would never have guessed. This captures the essence of English music, the dance, gaiety and underneath that melancholy. Wonderful

Thank you for posting this suite. So many moods and the wonderful Thomas Dewing oil painting that somehow charmingly goes so well with the visions in the mind’s eye the movements take us through. I list all the classical music I listen to. I had quite a few from Parry. And in the KZitem suggestions they post for members, you had this Dewing painting. So, thought I’d maybe listened before. As I listened I looked through my journal. As I played it again, I then wrote all the times that you indicated, the Prelude; Minuet style; Saraband; Caprice; Pastoral; Air (looked up “Air,” as Bach’s Air was a favorite of mine...so you educated me); Frolic. By the third listening I found that I had heard your post before and just write down the title.. Alas, I had listened, but didn’t really HEAR it until this repeat playing. Now, I am charmed and enraptured by this suite! Thank you for all the time you put into indicating the times and symphonic variations. ❤️

Yes, "British" from the first notes. Interesting to see that here, Parry is "free", not bound by abstract thematic music like some of his symphonies. And that reveals a new angle of a forgotten composer. Thank you for posting.

I think it will be found that this is a posthumous compilation of string pieces written for a Parry pupil, Dr Emily Daymond, and arranged in order by her, and not Parry himself. But no-one would think so at first hearing.

One of many nearly neglected British composers who opened the way for Vaugh-Williams, Elgar et. al. The American symphony repertoire needs expansion and bring these 19th century woks to the concert hall.

Don't know why Parry, Charles Villiers Stanford, and Elgar are not considered on a par with their continental, chronological counterparts. I am thinking of folks like Raff (superb composer), Brahms, Fuchs, Faure, Tchaikovsky, von Reznicek, etc. Germanic origins of musicology? Also, I wonder if the sublime, "pastoral aesthetic" in music, may have started with this great master (Parry).

MrVektriol Thank you for posting this! I had not heard of Parry. Having collected on my playlist Vaughn-Williams and Elgar; I discovered Fenzi, Butterworth, Harold Darke, Joseph Suk. So today I went to search KZitem and found your post! I now I have: Hubert Parry !! Distinctly English, joy and that slightly introspective poignancy! I’m an artist, so I also see your choice of painting is exquisite! So, my compliments, sir !!

USA's Northwest Public Radio, has been airing this, performed by the English String Orchestra. I've had to stop work during the "Air" or the "Frolic" AND JUST DANCE! I agree with Jane Baldwin's post; it is equal to Vaughn William's "The Lark." Mr. Vektriol, which string ensemble is playing this?
