Parry was so full of melody! He is among the top of tier of British composers! What a gift!

What a joyful piece - and a ravishing slow movement! Why Parry has been so neglected for so long is a mystery - but his revival is now well established. The 4th and 5th symphonies, and the Elegy to Brahms, are splendid works too.

Another great work by one of my favorite, underrated British composer from late 19th century. Such glorious music!

The symphony overall is a very fine piece, but I have to agree with a previous commenter that the opening minutes are especially captivating. When I first heard this symphony I found the first movement almost instantly memorable.

Great symphony! Well performed. I wish more orchestras would perform his and Stanford's symphonies more often.

You can say that again. They may not have gone forward and just wrote music in already established paths, but what they wrote in those paths was very often quite inspired.

Very much like Brahms, but so is Elgar. This music is instantly engaging from the very start! Love it, love it, LOVE IT! Hurrah for who the British once were.

A finely crafted and attractive work, in the Brahmsian mould but with some interesting pre-echoes of Elgarian gesture. For me, the last movement seems less inspired and more four-square than the first three - but is enjoyable enough!

La verdad es que me ha gustado mucho esta sinfonía. Formalmente, preludia el estilo suntuoso de Elgar; en cuanto al fondo, constituye una apasionada declaración de amor del compositor hacia su país.

Some of Mozart's works as well are trite and conventional. It all depends on what and how you hear and listen.

@@vince-tcturner9082 I only half agree with you. The first symphony (however skillful) indeed seems quite academic and unmemorable, but the second (Cambridge) is IMHO a true masterpiece, any bit as great as this third here, crammed with indelible melodies which grab you instantly and never leave you. It least so it was for me.

I looked while listening to this symphony but to no avail, luckily the next symphony of Parrys I chose someone asked about that painting and was answered so I took an educated guess this would be the same painter and it wasn't but luckily that artist brought up a page with a few unknown artists and the above painting was there :D Edmund John Niemann: Bristol Harbour (1862) Enjoy! 1.bp.blogspot.com/--x21yjmGIZY/UV8Xm_tim5I/AAAAAAAAeJY/cKygL3P0LLY/s320/Edmund+John+Niemann+-+Bristol+Harbour.jpg

Apart from some nice Elgarian moments in the first movement, this is quite a stodgy and unmemorable piece. Sometimes neglected works and composers earn their neglect...on the other hand Joseph Marx really should be better known. There isn't much on here but recordings are available.
