Huma was one of my first 'non-GU' gels, and I'm a big fan of them! They taste like jam to me. Really good.

Huma+ are my go-to gels. I have used GU, Spring, Honey Stinger and Maurten gels. GU/Honey are a bit sweet, and Spring/Maurten are more expensive. Some have salt/caffeine and other don't. I have used the GU Roctane too and put them in the same grouping as normal GU from a taste perspective. Maurten are nice just because I don't need to take water and they are like jello to me. I don't seem to have GI issues in general, so I go with what tastes good, is cost effective, and makes sense for the run I am doing.

few things seem to be as variable in terms of what works for which person than running gels. but it seems like the market is becoming well developed enough for there to be something for everyone. for a while, it seemed like GU was the only player

Huma Gels are really great, I like taking one of the Strawberry Lemonade gels at the start line for the marathon. The chia really adds a great texture.

i went with a spring energy packet right before my last half marathon, as i liked idea of having real food before the race. i could easily use a huma gel the same way.

I like Huma gels. I fueled with Maurten during my last marathon, and if you're looking for a gel that you can take with a minimum of water, I think Maurten is at the top of the list. It's a different consistency and just kind of dissolves in your mouth on its own, without too much water. They are also super expensive, haha. But worth a try.

the expense was one thing with Maurten gels, but the volume was another. it's just too bulky.

I’ve taken a few of these and really liked them. The taste was decent. Caffeine and salts were much needed. It went down pretty smoothly.

Are these mainly for during race/run nutrition or are they sometimes eaten pre race or just as a snack to get some healthier energy?
@kofuzi

i eat them pre race and during the race. i've never tried to eat them as a snack, but i suppose they could be used that way. although, for a snack, i'd probably want a bit more volume.

I had been using Huma+, I quit using it when I realized my performance declines considerably after I use it and learnt the sodium content is significantly higher vs. GU. You should drink about 300ml of water just to make it isotonic. In race environment, I find it difficult to drink so much water every time I get a gel.
@kofuzi

i haven't heard anything like that before. i'll have to look into that further.

@@kofuzi You can check GU website: guenergy.co.nz/pages/gu-energy-gel-nutrition-ingredients sodium is between 55-125 mg depending on the variety, whereas Huma+ has 245mg www.amazon.com/Huma-PLUS-Original-Nutrition-Endurance/dp/B01AH3NLQY?th=1

You shoudn't need more than three gels (at the most) for a Marathon - they're very strong and are packed with energy. If you take more than three you will feel queasy and may get the runs (the sh*ts basically)!

My anecdotal data is inconsistent with either of your hypotheses. For most people, I think the limiting factor will be what their stomachs can handle, and not necessarily their lower GI
