They are called Straight Blasts and are extremely useful for pushing your opponent backwards causing him to lose his balance. The technique is used by running towards your opponent while performing these punches, driving them back until they either counter your attacks ( which is highly unlikely, if you are doing them correctly ) or fall to the ground. This was one of Bruce Lee's favorite attacks. These punches should also be aimed at the face preferably, but the solar plexus are works as well.

The genius of the styles design is it's inceptive-based. Meaning, one only engages in these straight blasts after incepting a strike then upon incepting said strike following through with a chain or shift of straight blows at a finishing intensity to collar vitals

I did Karate starting from 11y.o all the way up to 18. In my 20s i did 2 years of Wing Chun. I never did really understand how Wing Chun punches like this were supposed to be so powerful vs what i was taught in karate but it was two very different disciplines anyway. Karate was always generating power from your stance, twisting your hips when you throw your punch as well as the speed from the trajectory of your fist which was always down by your hip (idk... Karate things....Karate see, karate do) Wing chun punches seemed more like death by 1000 cuts If you can accurately hit the same spot 100 times with weaker punches or hit vital areas to maximise its effect, its better than the one big super big punch you normally throw in karate, but nobody ever said you needed to throw your entire body weight for just one punch. When i sparred with people, we never went at it 100% like we were trying to murder each other. Though my opinion is that if i can end a fight in a single strike or the least amount of strikes - that is my goal. I aint got time to give you tummy rubs and tell you how im going to turn your insides into freshly blended chunky fruit juice. Either you lose or I lose, The sooner you go down, the sooner i can get the hell out of there. I dont want to still be there giving you massages when your crew turns up to beat my ass.

@paddotk Lee mixed wing chun with other styles he saw as useful, such as Western boxing, wrestling, and savate (3 main parts of pankration). After training in boxing he knew it could be very dominant in fist fighting and he used techniques described in books that were written by highly skilled boxers of the earlier eras. Many movements and "tricks" you don't see modern boxers use. The books by Dempsey, Corbett, and Driscoll are still available today either by downloading them or purchasing them.

This punch is trained by the Xiaolin monks who dedicate their entire lives since they were children to maximising speed and strength. Normal humans cannot do this punch without it being incredibly weak, because the speed requires the change in direction too much. However, it doesn't take much to stun an opponent and a series of these could easily shatter ribs.

@valgez Also, the whole concept of the chainpunch is that when you punch, that punching IS your guard, while the other is forced to guard, that's why this technique is effective, because there only way to stop it is to take a blow, then try to do a takedown. OR, a very very well placed hook. I know what I'm talking about, I've done martial arts for years.

Wing chun is extremely effective. Fighting is not about power, it's about speed. And even more so, technique and accuracy. Like it said, a human body can only take so much before it eventually breaks. It might not have the most powerful attacks at times, but the speed and technique are almost unmatched. If you can't hit your opponent it doesn't matter how strong your strike is.

@Alecal89 the thing here is that people who use this move have trained their hands into freaking rocks from all the practice and punching wood, rock and God knows what else so it wouldn't really be weak. It's like hitting someone with a hammer. You don't have to strike very hard cause the object itself is already pretty strong. All attacks and counter-attacks are initiated from this firm, stable base. Wing Chun rarely compromises structure for more powerful attacks because this is believed to create defensive openings which may be exploited.Wing Chun techniques are generally "closed", with the limbs drawn in to protect the central area and also to maintain balance.

I can answer for those asking what is wrong in the video. The stance, footwork and location of the punches. Though you can attack the sternum, the usual place you chain punch is the face. Also you do not just start chain punching. The punches start after the other persons defenses have been compromised or he is falling back or down after a kick. It can also be done after a trap where the other persons arms are immobilized.

@ikcjjtt Pinpoint accuracy? Not really. There's a pretty large amount of area that can be struck which leaves a relatively large room for error when compared to targets such as the eyes or the upper lip. As for the other takedown methods you mentioned, how often do you see those used in UFC outside of a clinch? Very rarely. Most of the time you see them diving towards your legs to try to lift you off the ground and take you down. The only time I see sweeps and trips used are from (cont)

Ok, for those who have any idea what i'm saying this video got some things wrong. He blocks with a bong sao and he doesnt have a wu sao behind it. A bong sao always has a wu sao behind it to cover an blind spots and once the punch is blocked the wu sao turns into a lap sao grabbing the arm before going in for the punches. So its bong sao+wu sao, lap sao, punch, check punch, roll punch.

Chain punches directed to the throat are powerful enough and most of all faster than any wide swinging "power punches." When you don't have pillows on your hands, I mean boxing gloves, it isn't necessary to hit so hard and it also isn't wise without that padding to hit the "bowling ball" that is a human skull.
@molewizard

"With the elbow behind your wrist, the power of each punch is maximised" You keep your elbox back to withdraw the arm quickly for another strike, and to minimise the length required to hit, not to maximise power. It actually takes a lot of power away due to the small distance of the punches.

Stressing BJJ vs trained enemy: What is the first move you do? Fake-punch the enemy, make him focus on his upper body, then swoop down to his open waist for a takedown. Do that and I'll either knee your face in mid-air (due to reflex) or just simply grab your hair, bend your neck, and u have to give up your hold or I'll rip your eyes/throat off, or smash your face with elbow. Or I'll bend down to drop your chest on my knee, then beat you in hand-to-hand combat (since it's my specialty).

The rear foot of the attacking guy in this animation is pointing outwards, along with the knee. Therefore, the hip and thus the whole body isn't optimally supported and the punch is weaker than it could be. He is also punching more from the wrist instead of the elbow (which you see because from the side, it looks a bit like a cycling action and the fists go down a bit) This makes kinetic linking through structure even more difficult, the full potential of the whole body isn't utilised.
@IHateToTellYou

@zacktillery you're completely correct....the animation is incorrect, the punches are meant to travel on a slight upward incline not in a circular downward motion...and secondly you advance forward constantly not stand there on the same point lol

@Bonertronica on a website. "The vertical fist places the knuckles forward, allowing them to take the impact of the punch and transmit the force down the back of the hand. A horizontal fist, in contrast, puts the finger joints in front of the knuckles so the impact must be taken there, making it easier to break the fingers. This can be tested by punching a wall with a vertical and then a horizontal fist." Seems to make sense to me.

@Bonertronica Your confusing your equations here. Technically speaking F(orce) = M(ass)xA(ccleration). That's acceleration not speed. The only reason why throwing a punch over a longer distance increases power is because of centripetal force. The speed of the punch doesn't increase. The fastest acceleration point of most punches is actually shortly after they are thrown, which is ironically, the point where most punches are not completely supported by bone structure.

@paddotk I should have been more clear. The modern version of pankration pulls elements from other styles besides just groundfighting and boxing in an attempt to reorganize it. Ancient pankration was the mixture of Greek boxing and wrestling along with all kinds of submission holds and strikes which included kicking as well.

If you get punched in the chest there'll be a brief moment during which you don't react. The impact stuns you. This is that, but the hits are chained so fast it's insanely difficult to ever stop being stunned. And then you've fallen down and he's punching your face and oh look a white light.

@Bonertronica Boxing... is boxing. Muay thai punches are basically boxing punches. The Karate twisting punch is a specialised punch that is delivered from the hip. So basically your argument is 'well we twist our fists in boxing, and karate has a special twist punch'. That doesn't mean that all fighters must twist their fists or they are automatically shit. As for 'putting your body into it' I think I put that one to bed.
@itskirbyfgts
13 жыл бұрын
@bishketflux No one actually chains punches like that, it's very uncommon to do a LONG burst simply because of that fact. Actual practice is to do a "Stop attack" to chain your punches whenever the other person reacts. Basically interrupt the timing of the attacker by chaining a punch whenever he attempts to block the previous attack.
@yosharian
13 жыл бұрын
@Bonertronica Granted, the punch loses power due to not twisting, but there are reasons for that. Wing Chun is all about the use of centre line punches, which does not jive with a rotating punch. WC isn't about 'the most powerful punch in the world', but rather controlling your opponent and delivering many punches. To call it 'weak' and 'shit' because it doesn't use a rotating punch is quite ignorant.

@LS0412 - I don't know what form of Wing Chun you were taught but a bong sau is most logical before JCC chain-punching because it 1) opens up the opponent and 2) creates the most economical starting point for a chain. e.g.- if you used Fook sau/Fuk sao or Taun sao/Tan sau you would be in the first case putting your punching arm out of zone and in the second you would have your own arm in the way.

Thankyou for clarifying, wish they would literate that instead of making wing chun a gradual battery ram, which brings the practitioners to shame: Lets not talk about the center line, lets not talk about the "intercepting fists" as Lee would put it, lets not talk about economy of motion and the direct and incredibly efficient line of approach that is the theory of wing chun, just its iconic rapid punches:p I tell you!;D

@snap0pans If that's an option, yes. @martialartist111 Gun in close quarters can be defeated as long as you keep the barrel off center line. The key is grip and control to keep the guy from getting the barrel on you. But unlike the movies, a simple knee to the groin can usually fix this issue. Thus after gaining control, it is very important to disarm immediately after somehow (aikido tends to work well).

A majority of JKD is wing chun based, and there's grappling, weapons, throws, locks etc. But most people dismiss it as "sloppy wing chun" and that is NOT what it is.
