For years all I had was a Buck 119 and 110 for all camping and hunting needs. You are correct about phenolic being used to make bowling balls (and billiard balls), so you know how tough that stuff is. Thanks for showing the different kinds of 119's. Some appear longer than others. I will never get rid of mine and I still use it a lot even though I have some "super steel" knives in my collection now. It is so easy to sharpen.

Just about everyone who owns a Buck 119 loves it, from what I have read in forums, etc. It is IMO one of the best "value for the money" knives ever made. Buck says they sharpen the 119 at 15 degrees per side, hence the wickedly sharpness you get, without rolling or chipping. The Cocobolo is so pretty I probably wouldn't use it. LOL A very nice leather sheath as well.

My first knife was a Buck 119 which I purchased from the military base I was stationed at and ended up giving it to get another one, but they had sold all of them and only had the 120 knife which I bought and still have it after so many years. About two years ago I purchased another 119 from the company store and with my name engraved on the blade so I would not give it away. The new one is in my collection of knives which I will keep for the rest of my life.

Lots of good points, and loving the series, a really refreshing perspective. I have a 70's and a 90's 119 and it's interesting to see the differences in blade grind other than the 440c steel. The 70's model has a much less pronounced hollow grind and a much finer tip. I got cold just watching you in the last one. Yes, the fuller helps balance the knife. Plus with the 119's thick blade, it reduces the weight, just enough to make it comfortable to use, with out compromising the strength of the blade. I've had my 119 since 1984, and its a great knife. Mine has the three piece sheath, and not the fold over design, and no plastic liver.

Bucks frustrates me because they let some horrifically ground secondary bevels leave the factory. I have a video about the subject. If they can't retain skilled workers and don't want to do proper QC, they really need to fully automate the sharpening process. Ontario seems to have the same problem.

Your right about scandi ground knives they perform great on thinner blades but on thick blades they're much too thick behind the edge. The upside you hear about from the mora factory as well as helle knives is the steep scandi makes for an incredibly strong blade itself, being so little steel is removed. The reason i like the scandi grind is the way it cuts, its not for everyone but i like the way the geometry parts what your cutting especially if its an older scandi that has been sharpened by hand a few times and has a convexity to it.

Plus it was free overnight shipping and next day the sale was over. Few years ago I decided to upgrade my one pocket knife collection after retiring from carpentry. I know I'm late to this video. The fact is, you do not need that plastic liner, but if you want a tighter fit. Remove the liver and get some thin pliable leather, use the plastic insert as a patern, then cut out the new "Liner" out of the leather. Dye it black, water proof it with some snow seal. Then when the new Leather Liner is dry fold it in half, then slide it into the sheath. Then, carefully using the knife. Use the blade to "Spread" the liner open, and there you go, no more rattle. I did that with my little Buck 102 Woodsman. Rattle is bad.
