The chop can be scary but chopping your plants promotes new growth! Air layering is a method of propagating stems still attached to the mother plant. A cutting of this size could take a longer time to root or you may find you’ll lose leaves while the cutting is trying to grow new roots. It’s been 4 weeks since the last update. Here’s what I used: A plastic bag with sphagnum moss and mixed perlite. Made a cut in the bag and wrapped it around the nodes (I chose to not score the nodes, you totally can). Left a small hole in the bag to be able to water the moss. Lastly, patience! I planned for this and decided to start air layering before the monstera was too big and hit the ceiling. If you found this helpful, consider following along for more planty tips and leave any questions down below!

Krystal, you are so talented. After your post the other day about plants helping with grief, it is all the more apparent how much love and care you are pouring into this hobby. And just look at all that new growth! I've been trying (and failing) to air prop a plant of mine, so this video is especially timely. That monstera is gorgeous!

One day. One day my Monstrette (monstera-ette obvs) will give me "too big" problems. Right now I'm babying it because it got sunburned and lost a LOT of foliage. Poor baby. Yours is just LOVELY! I'm going to keep Monstrette with her orchid sisters in my office, so no more well-meaning roommate incidents! 💚

@@gingerhalo123 Aww, I'm so sorry to hear it! Mine is--knock wood--really thriving in her new location, she has a surprising amount of new growth & I'm really glad. She _lost_ a lot of foliage, so now she has this blank space that looks like a reverse plant mohawk, but she's spiraling in on herself in such a way as to fill it all in. Too pretty to care, and so glad she's pulled through! I've lost a ton of plants this year and currently have some wee gingko that are making me desperate. I want one for my bonsai collection after losing a real beauty. I have three that are in their second summer & at least two of those seem to be determined to die. I suspect it's the heat here, my little trees might need some shade as the world's fire closes in on the south.

You're my inspiration! I was never before able to keep a plant alive. Not even a cactus! I just got a coleus great falls iguazu that was in need of an emergency repotting. The roots came out of the bottom like crazy. It was like a bird nest under the pot. So I decided to try and save it, just like you do. I bought a few more plants, that needed repotting and 2 days ago I repotted 5 of my new babies. They're so far flourishing! I talk to them and love on them daily and they all look amazing. Thank you for the inspiration!
