Rob, it will go very fast, here's why. That big stainless disc on top of the intake manifold is where the CART mandated blow off valve would be located. Boost limited by series rules. You, on the other hand, get to run all the boost!
@jsquared1013
3 жыл бұрын
But don't forget that the engine was also designed with that boost limit in mind, and from what I remember, CART didn't have the "engine needs to last X races or a grid penalty" like F1 has these days...
@EricGoesToShopClass

@@jsquared1013 exactly. The danger is blowing up what is essentially, a bespoke engine, designed to be precisely at the limit of what was allowed under those rules and restrictors (and restrictions). This isn't a rotary you have a bunch of parts for. You have to make every part you wreck. So I hope Rob has a very good idea of the math for this engine if he's going to change any of the major variables. These engines were bleeding edge engineering that were designed to run very short and very hard lives as they were.

True, but because of that the motor will go bang very quickly if you take it beyond what it is designed to do. F1 used to have qualifying engines that lasted around 30 miles before blowing up, that's 12 times 2 mile laps to qualify then a race engine was put in. A BMW 4 cylinder turbo qualifying engine was reputed to hit 1500hp.....in the 1980s.

@CanadaFirstchatt twentyseven Guessing Dave will be by soon to give his answer, but since the engine is built to be a structural member of the vehicle and lacks the typical area one would attach motor mounts, it would be extremely difficult to put this into anything else... One would need essentially design a vehicle around the motor. Entitled possibly, as I recall the F50 has its motor mounted as a structural member, but not a simple "Hey Jumbo, let's put that motor in yet Corvette! It'll sound so cool!" type job. Hey Dave, how far off base am I?
@bilaltariq7819

@CanadaFirstchatt twentyseven the problem isn’t that it’s a structural member, you could just make adapters for mounting it onto another car, but if it’s a race engine it’ll be hard to drive on the street and need a rebuild after x number of hours, it would probably need to run race fuel, have bad low end response and power, misfire, etc etc

He points out how impossible it would be to make a regular rotary run on this, the clearance requirements are insane, everything is built pretty much for this engine, it's not just part of the chassis, it's part of how the car was designed, and these cars are designed with NO margins: weight balance, ground clearance, everything is balanced for this engine.

You’re absolutely right, it’s nuts how this engine from nearly 20 years ago is more complex and more advanced than even the most technologically masterful engine in any road car to date. The only engine that could surpass it will be the W07-derived power unit from the AMG Project One, and that might not even take the cake because it’s so detuned from the racing motor. 2nd place is even debatable, I’d say even the Cosworth v12 from the Valkyrie isn’t as well-engineered as this motor. Those racing engines are just on another level, so much so that even an experienced mechanic such as as yourself is baffled by its complexity!

Rob i'd strongly recommend looking into borg warner turbos instead of garrett, there's a very detailed 2 part video where a guy compares the two in super detail and to be quite frank garrett turbos haven't changed much since the t-rex roamed this planet, even the G series.

Wouldn't they be falling behind, like immeasurably, if they hadn't changed in forever? With all of the advancements in turbos over the last 20 years, how would Garrett be as big of a company as it is if their turbos were sub par? Big turbos used to take FOREVER to spool not even that long ago... They must be changing something that this video of yours didn't touch on, because I know the Garrett's aren't still spooling like a big turbo Supra in the late 90's. Link this video of yours if you don't mind Mr. Head of Borg Warners marketing division! I'm on to you... 😑

unless it came with one the flywheel on that engine uses a carbon on carbon dual or 4 disk clutch . that's the same diameter as the flywheel it's small to match the clutch pack because the carbon clutches are insane at torque transfer and can take 5 times the force the engine puts out . think of it as an insanely good thing in an insanely small package it may help you get over the sticker shock when you price one of the clutch kits for this engine . I'm sorry I have to tell you this but there also Insanely expensive and the engine will have to have one to work it's what it was designed to use . I'm not going to name a particular sight but you can find web sights in England that still have these engines for sale all day long and in some cases you can get this same engine for between 10.000 and 40.000 dollars with all the spares and some sellers will throw in little extras to sweeten the deal just to move these out of there shops .they also have the transmissions the rear sections, all the linkages and fuel systems for these and the 6 cylinder Cosworth engines that were also engine regulated out they sell them as well .I never had the cash to get one but I can still look.

Anyone else notice how full blown built to the f**king hilt race motors are starting to step out of the shadows. I saw I video on the FA 4AG N2 last week and I've been watching videos on the hasslegren motors, Judd, and others. Up until recently a video here and there could be found or a flyby, but now they are really becoming visible to the public and it's great

I know the feeling of getting an individually numbered racing engine in a nice box delivered to your door. My engine may be down 7 pots on this one and it may not need any wiring harness, but it was hand built in the UK to exacting specs so it's essentially a Cossie!

Cosworth had actually been in the Indycar game since the 1970s with the Cosworth DFX, the predecessor to this engine. It was basically the defacto engine until Penske came in with the Ilmor Chevys and blew everyone away.

This is awesome, Rob. Doing what everyone loving 90s Indy car wanted to do. Believe it or not, they only had about 5-7 pounds boost over atmospheric. You may resto mod it but you might find out how good the ‘old’ race spec turbos and injectors of the time really were. When the Older versions, xa , xb , ran Indy, they saw about 2mpg in the race. So think about that methanol fuel bill ahead of you!
