They did their whole training back in time in the USSR, he still has a ton of documentation and training material tucked away in his garage (of course in russian) for the Mig 15 as it was his all time favorite next to the Mig 21 BIS. After he retired he could still keep his pressure suit and helmet which he used on the 21, it was more like a spacesuit then just a regular pressure suit :). He also taken a G-meter as a memorabilia from the 15 and it is still installed in on of our flight schools motor glider :) (SF-21 Falke, look it up for some LOLs :))

We had an off base "base" in Tonopah, Nevada (area 52) that had a handful of those things there back in the 70's. They were tanks compared to the 19's and later the Mig 21's & 23's Those were heady times. I never flew the 17 as it was really old technology even back then. The 19 was a lot hotter bird with a top speed of over 900mph. If you buy this thing, buy a fuel truck!! Good luck Jimmy!

Do it. We had someone up in Minnesota try to get the Crystal airport to extend the runway (at their cost) so it would be long enough for smaller jets. Allegedly he had purchased about 20 Mig 15's in various states of flyability and wanted to cobble them and make 5 flyable "fighter" jets but the powers that be didn't allow it. What a shame.

I had several buddies buy MIG 15s from Romania and Moldova they were dirt cheap and in good condition. The price included the diss-assembly and crating of the aircraft, along with all training flights need to learn the airframe. Plus it covered the re-assembly of the aircraft once it arrived in the US. I am waiting to hear what your price is for this airframe. It cost more for import taxes on my buddies aircraft than anything else.

We had a pilot/owner bring one to our school airport when I was in UAS school. Without a doubt, it is one of the loudest jets I've ever heard. And it does take a lot of runway to takeoff. I have C-17s fly over my house about 1200 ft because we are in the landing pattern of the airbase. The huge C-17 with its massive four engines is not as loud as that Mig-15 was. I've seen F-15s, F-16s, F-18s, and they were not as loud, now they were in the air at 1500 or so and I know that's not the same as on the ground. The Mig is so small compared to the fighters of today. When I first walked up to it I couldn't believe how small it was.

@Destroy all Soy I believe you. I would have loved to have seen an F-14 takeoff in person. The F-14 is one of my favorite planes of all time. I still think our Navy would benefit from an updated F-14 platform like the Super Tomcat that was planned but canceled. Our military likes to throw the baby out with the bath water in my opinion. The same as the A-10 they wanted to get rid of. We spent so much money developing these platforms and with modern updates, the platforms themselves would be able to continue service with less cost per hour. We don't need all of our planes to be stealth planes.

When we captured a couple of 15's the pilots that were dog fighting them could not wait to fly one so they could find it's weakness, they found that it took a gorilla in a steep dive to the right to hold the stick. That's were it was vulnerable so they would try to get them in a steep dive to the right.

Fun fact - the engine is basically a Rolls-Royce Nene handed to the soviets by our labour government (as long as they didn’t put them in military aircraft) and we now know that they would keep their word. They now owe the uk billions in royalties.

It's a great attention getter and probably loads of fun, but $3500/hr. just for fuel and an astronomical insurance bill, not to mention maintenance costs. Makes dumping bucks into the 310 look cheap! Not that I didn't watch the whole video though. You're a real character Jimmy!

Aren’t the skins made of a steel alloy? When the pilot defected they used a magnet on the wings. The avionics were also populated with vacuum tubes.

I take back my previous comment, it was not Rick Svetkoff. I’m pretty sure the guy was Mira Slovak. His story is incredible. He escaped Czechoslovakia by high jacking the plane he was flying. Was William Boeing’s personal pilot as well as a hydroplane pilot that Mr. Boeing generously funded. There is a book on his life called “A Race to Freedom” by David D. Williams.

OMG what a TEASE!!! Wow so much history here Jimmy, I sure hope you can give this ol' girl a good home, if not just to preserve it.. It'll take QUiTE a bit of work to fly her yourself, there's a LOT to it, and I'm pretty sure the maintenance schedule will be a FULL time job... but wowswers.. what a beauty

Your son is the absolute spitting image of you! Also, when a story has the phrase “so they bought the entire Bulgarian Air Force” you need to hang around and hear the other stories!

...If I remember correctly, these were available from the Polish Air Force and cost $50K. They came with all manuals, tools, and an extra engine....Back in the '80"s.......I had a friend that bought two of them. He said it cost $3K to fly it each time.......

If you are considering buying a Mig, wait a few months, somewhere on Asia is going to be big discounts in more modern versions and spare parts. Maybe not that good maintained, as operators are always drunk af in vodka.

My kids used to trail along on many of my flying trips, was a great bonding time, so its great to see you taking the young fella on yours. Scrap the C310 and buy this puppy, but you'll need deep deep pockets to keep it flying!

I have seen this MIG at several air shows. It used to do a fake as hell dog fight routine with a T2- Buckeye trainer. It was pretty lame to see a T2 out fly and MIG. When we all know the MIG would be the victor with ease.

Several years ago Colonel Jack Wilhite used to fly his 2-seat MiG-17 around north Denver. He was quite a character before his passing. Once I was driving near Jeffco airport and he came flying across at about 500ft agl. Not something you see everyday!
