A friend of mine came to me, asking for my help in finding a beater a few months ago. I picked out a 2002 Saturn L200 for him, which has the same powertrain as the late model Cavaliers. Got it for $1200 with 145k. Just needed basic routine maintenance and runs like a clock. Not even any rust. He loves it. Super cheap, dead reliable, and good on gas.

Got a soft spot for Cavaliers. My first car was an 86 Z24. I had a 2002 LS sedan same color and options as the green one you got there back when I was in college, mine had the old 2200 though, last year for that engine in these cars. Not to mention my parents had Cavaliers and a Sunbird at different points in time, my grandmother had Cavaliers, I grew up in Northeast Ohio about 20 minutes from the Lordstown assembly plant, so these cars were everywhere when I was a kid.

I used to have a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire with the 2200 engine which I bought back in 2014 after my younger brother wrecked my Grand Am. The Sunfire ran good but it was just the wrong type of car for me 2 years later I bought a 2007 Honda Accord which was a mistake because it was a salvage title vehicle and a money pit. I gave my son The Sunfire as his first car which he abused then eventually wrecked it while he was driving home high as a kite. I had to sell it to a scrapyard for $106 and I told my son get your ass a job and buy your own damn car which he did.

There is a shortage of 2009, 2010 and 2011 models, due to the Great Recession hurting new car sales back then. Fewer sold means fewer used ones, years later. Older 2000-08 cars are getting junked, dying, etc. When 2012-16 cars get older, then maybe more "cheap" used ones.
