Some of the best wood for cooking on the BBQ without adding extra flavoring is Cedar. Burns slow and has even heat on hot coals. I'd bet the cedar charcoal would be even better since you wouldn't have to wait for the wood to burn down to coals. I'll definitely be trying this method for making my Cedar charcoal. Thanks for a cool video!

Hi. Nice job. Kept it easy and simple. I have a similar retort. I have to add combustion wood twice with the lid and flue off. Then I pack it with short thin hard wood pieces and when it starts ‘burning my jeans’ I put the lid and clamp on. It only off-gases a little less than an hour but does make charcoal for biochar. I think my feed stock needs to be dryer to work better.

Maybe improve the airflow going into the bottom of the outer barrel, and start the burning process from the bottom, letting the heat and fire rise to the wood above it. And as previously, there needs to be a vent at the top to let the hot exhaust gases out so more fresh air can be drawn in the bottom.
@bradmetcalf7832

Completely wrong! You are going to get the same poor quality charcoal this guy did. I am going to guess the inner barrel was bot sealed at the bottom and since there was no vent to allow the wood to gas out it just burnt. Poor design, poor method, and Highly inefficient. There are far better methods on youtube that yield far better results.

I'd put a few bricks the big barrel, drill some holes in the bottom of the small barrel and cut out some sections in the big. Barrel that I could stuff some small wood or paper in to light. You had a good experiment and with a few changes you'll be set.

Keep feeding the fire one top until you see flames coming up from the wood at the side gap of the two barrels. Then put a lid on but make sure it has a chimney for a good draw. You should also have some holes in the outer barrell in the rim at the top so the wood gas gets some air to burn with. You can drill holes farther down the side of the barrel if it helps the char rate.

Question. The gases from the wood eventually becomes flammable, correct. So if the gases build up in the wood chamber, is that sort of like a bomb. Since the first burn was smothered, those gases were allowed to dissipate and vent when the charcoal results were checked. The second burn was completed and produced a good product since there was less raw material to burn. So, If the first burn had allowed the fire to continue and burn all the fuel, could the gases that would have been forced out of the bottom of the inner chamber, create a back draft effect at the top of the inner chamber, when the gases ignite by the fire?
@ginj5375

Any one ever tried using bamboo? How do you store your finished product? So all the houses that the fire dept. puts out, with water, could the oak rafters be used from a house fire for charcoal? Have seen so many just bull dozed down and hauled off.

Hopefully you have figured out by now that you never needed to put the weber grill top over the big barrel. You killed it with that. If you had just let the wood burn without starving it for air, it would have continued to heat up the inner barrel until the wood started to gasify, The gasses from the inner barrel would have then passed through the coals/wood fire around the outside and they would have contributed to the flaming wood jacket around the inner barrel. The flames would have slowed the changing of the outer layer of wood into charcoal, because they would have consumed the oxygen around the inner barrel, and simultaneously they would have heated up the inner barrel even more, causing a runaway chain reaction of gasification inside the inner barrel, so more flames around the outside, and it would have cooked itself into charcoal much more quickly and thoroughly. When you were hefting your "great" pieces of charcoal, I was noticing that they were brown here and there, meaning that they were not completely done.
@Kris-nk9mz

Gasification??? Runaway chain reaction? Flaming wood jacket? Chalk one up for public school I guess. Fireman 7753, nice job brother. Your experiment was awesome. And don't mind this guy, I did your same job for many many years and what he's got going on is no where even close to reality. Not even close. You know what your doing, you know this stuff. It's all about air flow. Chimney's, lids, covers, vents, intakes etc. Positive pressure, negative pressure, large openings vs small openings and on and on and on. All that stuff is all the same it just controls combustion in different ways. Choose your way and tools you like best. Stay safe amigo

After using this technique several times I feel it is worth the effort. Especially if you have the wood available to you for free. The charcoal I make is just as good, if not better, than any lump charcoal I buy from the store. I have been making lump charcoal with hickory and oak. I mix them and have been happy with the flavors my bbq gets.

why not just seal up the large drum and use your fire pit to heat it? Put holes in sides to expel wood gases into the flames. If you burn wood just for the sake of burning just drench the coals before turns to ashes in fire pit as well so makes charcoal there as well.

Charcoal is basically carbon made from wood. It burns hotter than wood and is used in many grills. Biochar is charcoal that has been soaked in water and fertilizer added. It is then spread on gardens. There is a lot more detail but should give you an idea of the basics.

JoeBob I cook / grill over wood, but it’s tricky because the flames are high. That can burn the food unless you elevate the grill high above the wood and really carefully tend to everything on the grill until it’s done. Charcoal emits higher heat with no smoke, which is ideal for cooking/ grilling
