that "line" you referenced is called a bark inclusion within the arborist world. its from two branches or trunks growing close together and then bark getting swallowed as it grows
@Boz1211111

yeah but its caused by incompatibility here. Its not supposed to cause bark inclusion if graft had perfect compatibility

That's cool, thanks. I bought a Winter Banana last year to eventually try this. grafting pears onto it or using as interstem maybe over Bud 9 or Emla 106. You should definitely have another go!

Also experimenting with this with different Rosacea rootstocks for apple and pear. Maybe they're not going to be as large and long lived as a full size rootstock but neither is Bud 9. I have a pear orchard topworked onto saskatoon/serviceberry and it's just a couple years in, but so far healthy growth - it's taking advantage of established trees, and they grow well in our super sandy soil. I tried some apple grafts onto saskatoon inspired by this pacific crab result and there's some compatibility there as well. I think you're on the right track with the interstem.

@@michaldurana4227 Bud is short for Budovsky if I remember correctly who is the Dr whose lab produced the rootstocks in the former Soviet Union. The 9 refers to the size of the tree according to that rootstock, with whatever flavor you've grafted on top. Emla is from England, East Malling research station I think. M9 is roughly equivalent to Bud 9 and Emla 9 is a more disease resistant progression of M 9. There's an MM series which is a collab between Malling and Merton in England, in the middle between M and Emla. Different varieties have different vigor also and can be matched with rootstocks. A person can do this with pots in a small space. It's rewarding and not expensive!

@@OakSummitNursery Thanks, I've noted that info in my exercise book of all things tree growing. I too have that gravelly sandy stuff, easy to work, well draining and hungry like a tiger. There's lots of young hawthorn around (no older trees which is odd) and I might have a go with pears on that but those thorns :) I'm at the beginning of a pear orchard with 3 yrs of prep and 7 yrs to get fruit, if I work hard and it all goes well. Short seasons and poor, acid rain afflicted soils here in Nova Scotia. I'm going mostly with 0HxF 97 and espalier to avoid ladders and lawsuits. Have a great day.

It looks like they were not compatable enough. It is amazing that it worked as long as it did.

Mosaic virus is my biggest fear, with all the grafting I've done in the last few years. I would hate to introduce the virus to my trees. Do you know if seedlings of infected trees can also be infected?

If you mean root sucker then yes they are Infected. Seedlings that sprouted from seed of apples taken from infected trees will be free of virus

I’ve heard winter banana is a good interstem between pear and apple.

Winter banana just happens to have some compatibility. I’m sure there are many others just not many people who have reported about it. I still think a hybrid between the two species would be a better bridge because it has genes from both species. It’s just my prediction. An apple quince hybrid would probably work well. Or double bridge. Apple-quince apple hybrid-quince-pear.

Is anyone, anywhere creating rootstock or scionwood for these purposes. For the sake of science, If your hypothesis is correct, The commercial value of grafted apple - pear would be tremendous. hmmm.
