Once again thank you Jim. I am about to purchase the marvel mahonia, three of them for a shaded side of the yard on the northern side of my house. I just needed to watch your video before making up my mind.

There is a creeping mahonia (Mahonia repens) and low oregon grape (Mahonia nervosa) which are less tall natives too.

I live in the mountains of far southwest Virginia zone 6a and I've found quite a few of the mahonia beylei coming up around my town. So of coarse my plant hoarding butt brought them home and I've found their pretty cold and winter wind resistant. I find it strange how I'm growing needle palms but yet I can't grow acuba or lorepetalum this is a random thought but desacation is terrible in this windy mountain locale it really limits what I can grow.

I'm at the northern edge of zone 7a in Maryland - do you think Soft Caress would be able to make it here, or should I stick with Narihira? I've read the latter is a bit more hardy.

I like that variety. I will add it at some point. The spines are very different. Almost like thrones. Good info. Thanks for watching.
