We love Mahonia Niall, for all the reasons you mention. I also didn't care much for yellow, but the Mahonia does lighten the garden up in Winter, as you said. We also have the smaller finer leaved Mahonia, 'Sweet Caress', it isn't as prickly as the bigger ones. So yes a thumbs up for Mahonia

Hooray! Another Mahonia fan! Yeah I find yellow a bit of a tricky colour - I’m not a fan, but can’t deny that it lifts things! ‘Sweet Caress’ is a gorgeous one 👍

Great video!! Thank you for the info. I'm in Ireland and I came across this plant walking on a Japanese garden of a business park. What about seeds or propagation? When can I go look for seeds on the plant? Which month? Or I could I take a small cutting of the plant. Would that work if planted then in soil? I was amazed at the fact that all the plants were exploding with those bright flowers and the smell was amazing! Like you I don't like yellow flowers but in the winter it's better than nothing and it's great for the birds, seen that it has berries!!

I'm about to plant one against the west wall of the house. (1 meter off) I've read some things about the rootsystem and was wondering if I should restrict it, like with bamboo? I don't want the roots to damage the house.

Lovely video Niall. Learned a lot about a plant that's totally new to me, with beautiful presentation and music to boot. The bark is wonderful - it reminds me a lot of Elder! What's your plan for the Mahonia in the long run?
@niallgardens
3 жыл бұрын
Ah cheers JB! Actually yeah I can see why it reminds you of Elder! I'm gonna be keeping this one really big. There are a few branches that have shot up so I'll prune them out, but otherwise it'll be more just maintenance pruning rather than anything formative 👍

Very interesting Niall. I’ve moved to a home (Ireland) and the garden has a mature one which we cut right back last year and it’s coming on amazingly. But unfortunately we are putting a shed where it is. My question is, can it has to be moved successfully? Love your videos, so informative 😊

Your mahonia is lovely multiple stem , why my is one stem ?
@niallgardens
3 жыл бұрын
It depends on its growth habit from quite young... It may have been encouraged to be a single stem by the grower. Otherwise it may not have been pruned in a way that would cause it to produce multiple stems from the base. Hope this helps!

Hey Niall, this plug plant series is great. Can't wait to see what you choose throughout spring n summer next year. Mahonia is great even if some garden snobs referto it as a carpark plant. Also good is the way new leaves form during the rest of the year. I just bought one from a local market stall a few weeks ago , but dont know variety. And I'm very jealous of the size of your beauty . Do you know how best to propagate them ? Itd be great if you added a couple of sentences on propagating into your plug plant series.
@niallgardens
3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha! Yeah I thought they were a little bit 'car parky' and then it grew on me! You can actually propagate Mahonias from stem cuttings or by layering in June / July so it'd be worth a shot to see how you get on! Thanks for the suggestion - that's definitely something I can think about including in future videos!

So I just came back to this video... Remember I told you about our mahonia - which is theoretically growing exactly where it belongs, beneath a lilac tree... However, it is now in the way - or will be, when it has grown for another year or two. To transplant, or to remove? (I really don't know where a good spot would be but I hate taking out plants completely...) There's nowhere on the allotment that I would ever be able to let it grow as large as yours is...
@niallgardens
3 жыл бұрын
Oh! Good question! How much height underneath the lilac tree is there before you reach the underside canopy? The reason I ask is that I'm thinking... I wonder if you could just keep in hard pruned and really under control. It'll make for a nice small-ish shrub a few feet tall?
@MorningsattheAllotment
3 жыл бұрын
@@niallgardens - that sounds like it could work, yes. The lilac is on the edge of our allotment, reaching out over the path, so we have to keep the lower growth pruned back and the canopy fairly high (it's definitely been there for a while and looks like it was originally grown more like a bush and less like a tree, but the placement doesn't leave much choice in how we prune it now that it's bigger). The mahonia is further in from the edge. Maybe I'll just leave it there for now, see how it does this season, and then move it in the fall or next spring if I absolutely have to. We're also putting a bench in that general area of the garden to try how we like that, so it will be a work in progress LOL
