The prosecutor said that he did not want to put either Steven or Timmy through the ordeal of testifying in court. And it would have been an ordeal. This was before the era of rape victim shield laws, so the defence would have first forced them to reveal every tiny detail of what happened to them and then would have dragged any tiny thing they did wrong (Steven's alcohol and drug use) to impeach them as witnesses. I don't think that it was necessarily the wrong decision but I think the prosecutor should have consulted with Steven and Timmy White and their respective parents first; if the victims had not wanted to testify, then the decision not to charge the perp (I refuse to give out his name in comments on a video dedicated to Steven Staynor) would have been the correct one. No one should be forced to get up in front of a bunch of strangers and reveal in excruciating detail the worst experiences of their life. But it is possible, particularly for Steven, that he may have wanted to testify; he should have been given the choice.

Thank God laws have changed towards these issues and have gotten more severe.. Still theres more work to do for that..
@GrainneDhu
4 жыл бұрын
@@Breezy-bv9te more draconian laws is a two edged sword. They work to get perps locked up longer but it can also work to keep victims silent. Remember that well over 90% of child sexual abuse is perpetrated by someone in a legitimate relationship with the victim. Family, babysitters, church youth leaders, teachers, the list goes on and on. Most of these perps do not abduct their victim and brainwash their victims (I believe Steven was brainwashed); instead, they take advantage of their legitimate contact with the child and usually love-bomb them. It's also called grooming but I think the term 'love-bombing' makes it easier for people to grasp what happens. The perp deliberately develops a trusting and inappropriately intimate relationship with the child long before any actual sexual abuse takes place. If some other adult notices that the perp/child relationship seems a little more intense than normal or that the victim is overly dependant on the perp, smart perps just drop the victim and walk away. So what happens is that the child loves the intense attention, approval, admiration, etc, and (at first) the small boundary violations don't seem so bad. The perp deliberately develops a sense of secrecy around the whole thing and watches to see if their victim is willing to keep the secret. If the victim doesn't, there's still plausible deniability and the perp drops that victim. The victim is hurt, often wonders what they did wrong and quite often seeks the perp out. The perp then makes it clear that an ongoing relationship means keeping quiet. And so it goes. By whatever means, the perp has deliberately cultivated a relationship of sick love and secrecy with the victim such that the victim often feels uncomfortable with the abuse but wants the 'good' parts of the relationship. I'm talking child and adolescent victims here, who don't have the emotional maturity to fully understand relationships and what is healthy versus unhealthy (and heck, quite a few adults don't fully understand the difference either). The victim feels intense pressure to keep the secret. The perpetrator makes such to set things up such that the victim feels responsibility for the perp's safety (which is an obvious reversal of appropriate roles but kids often don't understand that). If the victim knows that the perp will suffer dire (and fully justified) consequences, they are often unwilling to come forward. There's a lot of stigma around sexual activity, there's a lot of stigma around being 'that weird kid', etc. The problem is intensified if the perp was a family member. Quite often, the first response by child protective services is to remove the child from the home for their own safety. But the kid doesn't see it that way; they often see it as punishment for not keeping the secret. The kid feels like they did what they have been taught to do in school, etc--report uncomfortable touch or an uncomfortable relationship and then their whole world falls apart. I believe that an appropriate response has to consider the effect on the victim first and foremost. If the victim does not want to testify in court (many do not), then prosecutors should respect that. The victim has already suffered loss of autonomy at the hands of the perp; it is important to give back autonomy as far as possible.

How many more kids did he save by getting that monster off the streets? He was a HERO, yet he was bullied for being a VICTIM smh and still tried to maintain a positive disposition because he was an inherently good person despite the evil he was subjected to. His struggles and hardships were a direct consequence of the abuse he suffered, and that kind of makes me think the motorcycle accident maybe wasn't an accident..? Idk. God is the God of Abraham, He is the God of Isaac, and He is the God of Jacob. He is the God of the *LIVING* and *NOT* of the "dead". I agree. It's sad because when I grew up in the 50's and 60's my parents, grand parents, teachers and church drummed in us common sense, and to treat folk the way we would want to be treated. Bullying was not tolerated period. Our kids now are not being taught these things at home and teachers are not allowed to teach them these life principles. We are raising wild, violent and disrespectful children who care nothing for others and nothing for life theirs nor yours. You have to train children with love from the cradle.... Having said that, Evil is in some folk and theres nothing we can do about it but lock them up or kill them before they kill someone else. Sad but true.

What matters is I SURVIVED. I found STRENGTH through the PAIN..... and I pray that now Steven and Timmy have found the PEACE that life denied them of... ⚘⚘ Thanks for sharing Lamont.
