I’ll Bid My Heart Be Still, an Old Scottish Border Melody arranged by Rebecca Clarke
Rebecca, viola
Ines, piano
The old Scottish Border song “I’ll Bid My Heart Be Still” was written in the nineteenth century with text by poet Thomas Pringle. The version you’ll hear today was arranged by British composer Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) in 1944 as a wedding gift for her fiancé, James Friskin, just before their marriage. Also a virtuosic violist, Clarke was one of the first female professional orchestral players. Although her works are known for their neat compositional construction and emotional power, her overall output was small, and she was often discouraged from composing by her male colleagues. Many of her works have yet to be published, and those that were published in her lifetime were largely forgotten after she stopped composing until musicologists at Brandeis University reinvigorated interest in her work in 1976.
