Reena Esmail (b. 1983) is an Indian-American music composer of Indian and Western classical music. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree in composition from The Juilliard School and her Master’s and Doctorate degrees from Yale School of Music. Her doctoral thesis, entitled "Finding Common Ground: Uniting Practices in Hindustani and Western Art Musicians", explores the methods and challenges of the collaborative process between Hindustani musicians and Western composers. Among her many compositions are works for orchestra, solo instrument, chamber ensemble, and voice, and recent accolades include a Fulbright-Nehru Student Research Scholarship; Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Citizen Artist Fellowship, 2017-2018; she was a United States Artist Fellow in Music, 2019. Saans ("Breath") was inspired by the story of the composer Cesar Franck, who dedicated his violin sonata to his friend Eugene Ysaye. The composer and the violinist sight-read the sonata on the night of Ysaye's wedding. As Ms. Esmail was completing her Clarinet Concerto, she saw that the 2nd movement of it would be the perfect wedding present for her dear friend and colleague, pianist Suzana Bartal. Coincidentally, while Esmail attended Suzana’s wedding in Paris, Saans was being premiered in Los Angeles. Later on, Suzana would perform the piece again, the night before Esmail’s own wedding.
