I'm a janitor and plumber at the National University of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, for a day. I spend the day cleaning and mopping the classrooms, hallways, and bathrooms of the large academic buildings. Then the plumbers teach me how to repair toilets. I learn about the sacrifices of the workers, who get up at 4 in the morning to keep the university orderly. As we work, the staff tell me about their lives, hopes, difficulties, and the big dreams they have for their children.
After a long day of work, I visit the UNAH Experimental School, a school formed 20 years ago within the UNAH for the children of the janitors, plumbers, gardeners, and security guards. Upon entering, I realize a sad reality: the school, made of compressed cardboard, is collapsing. The walls are destroyed and thieves have crawled through the huge holes to steal the children's computers and backpacks. The roof is collapsing and when it rains, so much water leaks into the classrooms that the children have to cancel classes and spend hours removing water.
When I was a university student in the United States, I worked for two years as a janitor at the university cafeteria. I spent my nights mopping floors and wiping tables. The work is hard, it pays little, and it is an invisible job where practically no one recognizes you for your work despite it being such an important job.
I've made the decision to try to raise the 2.7 million lempiras ($110,000) necessary to completely rebuild the UNAH Experimental School. On April 4th, I will begin the biggest challenge of my life: run 250 kilometers from San Pedro Sula to Tegucigalpa.
