I've been saying that I'm on a Keto-friendly diet. I'm a T2 diabetic, so as long as my blood glucose remains around the 100 mark and I keep losing weight toward my intended goal of 190 lbs (-25 lbs so far, with 20 lbs to go ), I will call the diet a success. Otherwise, I couldn't care less about the Ketone exact count. I must be doing something correctly! And that's what keeps me motivated...not obsessing about Ketone numbers. However, I am glad that channels like this exist to educate me as needed! Thanks!

Through low carb and intermittent fasting I lost my weight (70 lbs) and am truely diet controlled. Ketovore almost 2 years now. But I hadn't been able to get my fasting sugars down (still insulin resistant). I am now working Dr. Boz's program and my morning glucose levels are dropping and I am becoming more ketone flexible. Yeah... I had a person come to me and say they are on keto diet and it took them two months to start producing ketones. I said "No sir, a human cannot store more than couple of days of carbs. If you are not eating carbs your body has no choice but to start producing ketones. If your car kept functioning every day even though you did not put any fuel in it your first thought would be that somebody is putting fuel without your knowledge, not that your car is somehow different from every other car and can function without fuel."
@Back2SquareOne
Жыл бұрын
This is not technically correct. The body has the ability to create carbs. Your body needs a small amount of carbs for certain bodily processes. Fortunately, if you have a functioning liver, you can produce all the carbs you need. That is why you don't have to eat carbs, because you can make them.
@scott-unretiredcarnivore

You are partly correct. The body can make plenty of glucose with no carbs. I have been keto for three years and carnivore for six months. I have had glucose rise to almost 300 ,after a 48 hour fast and 100% carnivore prior, during vigorous exercise. If someone is under stress with high cortisol even fasting glucose rises and ketones are blocked. 32:19

Watching this in April. I am an insulin dependent diabetic and I have Parkinson’s. My c peptide was 0.3 so I make very little insulin. But I am very insulin resistant. I am starting the ketogenic lifestyle again. I decided to start with sardines. I started doing glutathione and NAD supplements about two weeks ago. My tremors have almost disappeared, to the point that sometimes I totally forget my sinemet. I might take it once a day, prn. I firmly believe that keto will help my Parkinson’s even more than the nad. My problem is weaning off most of my insulin. I know I have to have insulin even if my blood sugars are good. I hope to totally stop fast acting insulin and cut way down on long acting. So tomorrow I start sardines and charting my blood sugar and ketones.

@@brendaseager7371 "peed purple" refers to the ketone test strip. It turns purple when you pee on it while you are in ketosis. It is the fastest and cheapest way to test if you are in ketosis and I would say most people don't need anything more than it. The precision of ketone measurements does not matter. The important fact is that you are producing enough ketones to turn your test strip purple. One caveat is that after some time in ketosis your body starts being a bit more efficient with ketones and will expel less of them through urine. And this means the test strip will be less purple even at the same blood ketone levels. But that's just fine, don't worry about it.

@@celestebinus6142 I love to cook but I also have a busy job and I have to be efficient with it. Rather than fail because of lack of time or ability to focus, for the first two weeks I have ordered boxed keto diet. I did this so that I could focus staying productive while in transition without constantly thinking about food, doing groceries, etc. It was actually pretty good idea. I mean, the food was awful but there were some good ones that I photographed, made notes and learned to make properly on my own. One good thing about food in boxes is that the calories are pretty carefully calculated so that I had nice steady daily weight loss, much nicer that I ever managed to do on my own. Nice steady daily calories help a lot in managing cravings. I also was already on 20/4 intermittent fasting regime which means I pretty much ate everything in one go, sometimes splitting it into two and give myself a bit of time in between. Later I learned enough recipes to cook on my own and have enough variety to stick to it. Now I am going on and off keto periodically. I will stay for a month in ketosis and then I will stay off ketosis for a month but still without overindulging carbs. I do this primarily because I can never completely forget about all the fantastic food I love to make. It is easier to stay in keto knowing there is going to be a break. It lets me eat fruit and vegetables from time to time. I also do this to improve my metabolic flexibility -- going on and off is more beneficial than just staying in ketosis all the time.

Problem with that statement is you may eat carnivore and still not be ketogenic some people like me that have autoantibodies against their insulin causing insulin resistance will never get ketones because the insulin they make cannot unlock and use fat. IAS. I do carnivorous diet because I have those issues and if I eat carbohydrates an hour later it creates seizures. Do to delayed over shooting of insulin from my pancreas to overcome even the smallest amount of carbs. Yet I don’t get ketones as long as fats are blocked due to insulin resistance. My body makes loads of insulin it can’t effectively use. But the only way to stay out of seizures and severe hypoglycemia is not to eat any carbs. As a kid I was drugged to the moon on anti seizure medication before they placed me on Akins diet.

I am not in ketosis. I thought I was. I've been eating keto or even carnivore with well under 20 carbs for 3 months and can't lose weight. So I started watching your videos. I'm eating about 1200-1800 kcals (70% or more fat) in my 6-7 hour window. (I use an app to record what I eat, and it shows the calories, though I'm trying to not go by calories). I even did the sardine fast and still didn't lose weight. So I ordered the KetoMojo and now everyday when I get up my glucose is 101 to 126 and my ketones are 0.1 to 0.5, so no ketosis for me. How can that be? Oh, maybe it's because I've been under a tremendous stress since December that culminated with my brother dying last week!! So I ordered your books, and I'm trying to psych myself up for fasting. Maybe when I can read the books, maybe then I'll learn something that might change things.

I have been in that stress zone before. I seriously do not know how I got through it. I would tell you that asking people for help when needed is a good step for reducing stress. The other is spiritual. Listen to music that makes you happy. I actually kistened to music with my phone and earbuds almost all day. Prayer or meditation along with deep breathing exercises will also keep your cortisol levels down. I think you will find that this will help in raising your ketones. I would also be patting myself on the back for staying on the plan for three months. Congratulate yourself for getting started and sticking to it. I am impressed! Losing a sibling is a big loss. I know. Keep up the good work...

Sounds like you are pushing things way too fast. If you are reading the books, you will know that you are not ready to do a sardine fast if your eating window is only down to 7 hours. See the Keto Continuum stages. After successfully moving to an 8 hour eating window (for weeks) one must cut that down to 4 hours for several weeks, then gradually down to one hour for several weeks, then move the one hour to middle of the day and stay there for several weeks (or 8). All of this is before even trying a 36 hour fast! and the sardine fast is to be after all this is successfully completed. All of the above is my understanding from reading Keto Continuum and watching the videos. The keto continuum workbook then walks you through all these steps with places to record your progress and what to do if stalled. Good luck and health to you. It took a long time for us to get unhealthy and the body is not going to completely reverse course in only a few months. 🤗

Why do I feel extremely weak from lack of carbs when I lower my carbs and just get 20mgs a day. I shut down completely and no ketone are being produced. I feel like I'm about to die!!!

I started watching Dr.Boz two weeks ago and ordered her recent books. I can't watch any more and haven't opened the Amazon Box. I feel like compared to Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Mindy Pelz, and all the guests Dr. Rangan Chatterjee has on, this Doc rambles in her thoughts and stories, and never really tells me anything. Plus, she is so extreme .."eat only sardines for a week. Fast 72 hours once a week ...even if you look like a Barbie Doll.".

please explain how to know if your body is using the ketones you take, as many stated that you can have high ketones in your blood but that does not mean that the body use them or even pie them out

Unrelated question but can anyone including the doc answer this Question: female friend avoids/ limits sugar intake because doctor said that women who have gone through menopause can’t metabolize sugar as well anymore which can lead to developing diabetes. Any truth to this?? Just curious.

You absolutely need to be making ketones to be doing a ketogenic diet. You should certainly measure your glucose and ketones while you are figuring out what will work to keep you in ketosis. Once you can see you are staying in ketosis, you only need to measure if you stop getting results. I personally measure a couple times a week no matter what, but if you are getting results then that is fine.

How many times do you check your ketones during the day?
@kimantonell2123
Жыл бұрын
I go off and on...I'm a horrible ketone maker. But I persevere. I any case, I like to check before I eat for the first time in the day, 2 hours after I eat, (to see how much I spike from a meal), and before I go to bed. Dr. Boz encourages us to check first thing in the morning but I find that to be depressing, which makes me give up, so I only do that like once a month. I do find that fasting has brought my morning sugars down... so less depressing!

I do it only before first meal which is around mid day, as I do 18/6 fasting with 2 meals at 12 and just before 6 afternoon. I don't check ketones in the morning when cortisol is high, as that is when they are low. I am checking them at the end of the fasting time when body is fully awaken.

Urine ketone strips are not reliable, particularly past the first two weeks. Switch to a blood urine ketone tester to accurately tack and make sure you are actually in ketosis. Also track your calories, if you are consuming too many calories, you won’t lose weight, even if you are in ketosis.

I find that I have to be super carefull with my carbs, if I want to get enough vit C and eat other veggies than some leafy greens. I get constipated on low carb, and I guess it is because my fiber is too low. If I have some berries, I can't have vegetable pasta (Zuccini and bell pepper) with my mackerell without pasing 20 carbs. I can easely get my food down to 40 carbs, but I struggle to get to 20 carbs, without ending up being very low on calories, fiber and vit C. (I follow my nutrients on the Cronometer) There is no room for my kefir and prunes on 20 carbs. And sour crout is not a every day favourite, as I can't find it at my local supermarked. How do you recommend getting enough fiber and vitamin C on only 20 carbs a day? I plan to try the sardin fast, and I wonder if it is ok to add 60 grams of leafy greens, and psyllium seed husks to the sardin fast. (I do take Magnesium and apple cider vinegar).

@@mefirst4266 I just started watching her videos and she mentioned salt baths for magnesium like sea salt and the pink Himalayan salt as she herself suffered from leg cramps when she went Keto.
