You do NOT need to put braids in her hair after a chemical service because the hair is very fragile. The chemicals in hair relaxers break bonds called disulfide bonds. Breaking these bonds makes the hair more susceptible to breakage and split ends. So, I recommend doing a style that doesn’t require any pulling or tension .

Just be careful because relaxers have been found to cause fibroids and lead to other health issues in those who use them. Sadly, if it has caused much more we wouldn’t know due to their popularity and lack of research. I would recommend returning natural as it is healthier (literally healthier since relaxing has to break bonds in the hair to make it straighter and it isn’t good for the scalp/body). Some tips for tighter curl patterns: ▪️Try the 30 day detox. I’ve witnessed women with 4c have much quicker wash day routines and detangling. From start to finish it is usually around an hour or less and it’s done once a week but as little as every 3-4 days. It seems to work so well because the hair is constantly hydrated by the source of hydration (water) and then only clean and defined by botanical products without oils or butters within the first 5 ingredients. It defines the tightest 4c curls and detangling becomes a breeze! ▪️If you’d like to still use oils and butters than washing once a week is still beneficial because it places back in that moisture! Using aloe for detangling is super helpful too. ▪️For drying hair you can wrap your hair in a t-shirt for a little while (about 5-10 minutes) to absorb excess moisture and then diffuse the hair on low-medium heat or sitting under a hooded dryer on low-medium heat. Another way is, if it’s a hot day, go on a walk. 😆 I’ve done this in a rush and my hair dried incredibly fast from the sun haha. Your daughter is a beautiful young lady with or without the relaxer. I don’t like relaxers for a few reasons, but one of the bigger reasons is because it is truly unsafe. God bless you both! 🤍

I truly wish my mother never relaxed my hair so young, and that she would have left it up to me when I was old enough to understand the risks. If I knew better then I would have insisted on not going any further than hot combing. I have 2 girls with long thick hair. One is very tender headed and it’s a struggle from time to time. It’s also bonding and allows her to learn about herself and build confidence while embracing the ups and downs that come with our beautiful crowns and the time & care it takes to maintain it. Also gives them time to come to an age of understanding where they will fully understand the risks of chemicals to our hair and scalp so they can make educated decisions for themselves regarding their hair without having to go through any huge transitions.

Omg! It's good to wait 2 weeks before getting braids. Relaxers breaks down the bond in your hair. Your daughter and my daughter are hair twins! She has that same type of hair. I relax her hair around 10yrs old. The older she got the thicker it got. That type of hair they got does that. I didn't have a choice, but to relax her hair or if she kept her hair natural I would have to moisturize and seal every day to keep it from getting tangle and knotted every day and she won't having that messing with her hair every day. People say that relaxers cause uterine fibroids, but the hair products you use, medicine and food can cause them to. Some people get them and some don't. It's life! Harm and damage is exactly what relaxers cause -increased risk of cancer, -hormone disruption, -Alzheimer’s disease, - -fibroids, cysts, -developmental and reproductive damage, In a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology, relaxers are referred to as “a chemical concoctions that may be linked to fibroids that grow in the uterus and may contribute to premature menstruation in Black girls among other potentially harmful issues.” YIKES! So, the chemicals in relaxers can affect hairdressers as well as the ones receiving the relaxers; I think we owe it to ourselves to start demanding far more detailed answers to some serious questions regarding the overall impact of these products on our bodies. Here is how chemicals from relaxers are passed throughout your body and cause harm: When you get a relaxer, it uses your body temperature to heat up on the scalp. The longer the relaxer sits on your hair to process, it begin to burn through your hair follicles, causing inflammation. From there, it begins to seep into your blood stream and move throughout your lymphatic system. When you urinate, you pass the chemicals from the relaxer through your reproductive system, causing fibroids, cysts and other bad elements to enter into your body. The inflammation caused by the burning of your scalp, is the leading cause of dermatitis in African American women. Using relaxers also has a tendency to cause breakage and thinning of the hair. Given that relaxers are used to permanently alter your natural hair texture, your hair will become weaker and more likely to break the more you relax. There are many alternatives to relaxers such as smoothing treatments (which are amino acid profiles) and blow-out services. While these alternative options aren’t permanent, straight hair should not be more important than your health! Whether to use relaxers, or remain natural is a decision that must be made by each individual. Nevertheless, for those who opt to use relaxers, do keep in mind that relaxing comes with a price. Written by Nina Ross of Hair Therapy -allergies, and the list goes on.

@@chidenisee I have been natural now for 8 years. I have had problems with fibroids in my breast, they’re small ones in my uterus. They’re starting to shrink now. Enough of this. I started my natural hair in 2018, 5 years Now and still going strong. I love my Hair and people who see my hair for the First time get surprised by How Beautiful it looks. They say they couldn't get their Hair to look that good. Well, I make the time for my hair. If I'm going to be Very Busy, I wear Braids or do some Natural Twists so that I can focus on what's to come but once I'm done or I'm Free I make Time for my Hair. Because my Hair is Delicate and Important to me. It deserves All that Time and Patience in order to flourish. I don't rush my hair. It is Unique for a Reason.

Honestly, the way your daughter wears her hair is the main problem. I'm a hairstylist & have daughters with 4c hair who feared me doing their hair. The problem was that I let them wear their hair down or I would do twist outs. 4c hair tangles fast & quickly. I had to actually braid their hair & will only let them wear their hair down on rare silk press occasions. I see parents put relaxers in kids hair for convenience & all it does is damage their hair when the parent doesn't know exactly how to care for relaxed hair

It’s important that we as black women spread awareness about our bodies and issues. That’s not hate, it’s love. I didn’t know about all the relaxer causing cancer lawsuits until last year. But to your point, I would definitely encourage any mother or woman considering these chemicals to talk to their OB/GYN about how it affects our bodies! It’s not opinions, it’s actual science. These companies knew the risks and that’s why there are so many lawsuits. All these adverse health conditions are overwhelmingly statistically unfavorable to black women and we have finally found out why. How can we call truth that can help us offensive? Whatever decision is made, I would want all the facts. Combing my baby’s hair is extremely hard. It takes me HOURS. We spent so much time with both of us crying but I learned over time how to make it better. With what I know now, I would lock my baby’s hair before I relax it. It is a dangerous chemical in our bodies and the science is there for anyone who wants to know but no one should be condemned for sharing NEW information that could save the next sister from a lifetime of health issues or death. We absolutely should care enough about each other to tell the truth.
