Hey y'all. Hope you guys enjoy this one. When I first began writing it, I had my Star Fox video in mind and thought... hey I can probably make a one hour video out of Pikmin! Oh how wrong I was. I love Pikmin so much that I actually had to restrain myself from finding more things to talk about... like how levels repopulate with enemies after a certain amount of days, or the mysteries of Louie's character, or the secret data files in Pikmin 3! And those are just off the top of my head... so if there's anything I missed, let's talk about it :D. I can't believe Pikmin 4 is finally here and my plan is to play through it at my own pace and make a follow up video when I'm ready. Hope to be back again sooner than later!

The point being is that they don't make new IPs for the sake of making them. They build games around the act of simply asking very basic game design questions and following a train of logic in the direction of a general end goal. They still treat the craft as a craft and not a means to an end for business. Still, even they miss sometimes. ARMS didn't land as hard as Splatoon did before it. Pikmin didn't end up the killer app of the GameCube, Melee and Metroid Prime did. We suffer these occasional misfires because we know they absolutely hear feedback and take it seriously in making the next entry. It's how we got BotW, it's why Pikmin managed to get 4 genuinely different and valid games that stand up well individually to this day. I respect it.

This is a great video. This isn’t talked about enough. Nintendo is so innovative and they’re sooo loyal to their creations and I think that’s soooooooo honorable. Mario literally started as Jumper man and now he is MARIO and he had one of the best box office movies of this year. Nintendo is really on a different level. Sure they may not always have the strongest systems but they’re never too far behind and they make up for it in different ways.

Honestly I didn't even give a single consideration for Olimar in Smash, which is probably a miss on my part. I feel like the problem was that there wasn't a new Pikmin game to pair with Smash, and in the game he's not as popular a fighter as say, Fox, Falco, or the Fire Emblem boys. I will always defend Pikmin 2's caves for highlighting just how versatile the core gameplay mechanics of Pikmin really are. They shift the player's approach from meticulously multitasking and spreading your troops thin for maximum efficiency, to huddling closely together and creeping around with an increased sense of caution, activating and suppressing traps one by one as if you were defusing a bomb, and strategically taking down groups of enemies that are clumped together in such a way that would spell disaster if you were to just recklessly charge in. And the fact that the layouts are procedurally generated means you can never truly learn or memorize your way through. Even if you reset a sublevel in hopes of undoing a loss, you'll be greeted with an entirely new rearrangement of elements, all waiting to ambush you anew. To me, it's exciting in a completely different way than how Pikmin 1 captures you, but it still makes just as effective use out of Olimar and the Pikmin's abilities, the challenge in both cases being to juggle a gigantic horde of powerful yet fragile creatures in order to collect the items required to finish the game. But just as the biggest threat in Pikmin 1 is time, it feels like in Pikmin 2 the opposite is true, that being the space itself surrounding you. I can completely understand how some felt it cheapened the brand of gameplay that Pikmin 1 introduced, but to me, it was a showcase of how flexible the formula can be... case in point, the way both Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4 situate themselves on various points along this vague spectrum of "1 style" vs. "2 style" without ever drastically veering from either of those games, yet still manage to deliver fresh and unique experiences in their own ways. Who knows what direction a hypothetical Pikmin 5 would take the series in now.

You know despite the caves being bad by your description I love them as I see that they've actually went the full way on randomising how the layout is because they also randomised the music which I think is pretty cool edit honestly didn't expect him to put down hey pikmin in here as my first pikmin game I loved it especially the collecting shiny objects part I love shiny things Each of the twenty pikmin you met in each level had their own personalities and jokes that would accompany their character throughout that level If there are any cutscenes in that level (normaly there are)

Something interesting about the specific Shaggy Longlegs fight that you showed for Pikmin 3 is that it's unique, as Rock Pikmin can actually climb its legs and making most of the danger nullified. I first learned about it because of Chuggaaconroy's playthrough, and thought you might find it neat

That seems like a strange oversight! What happens when they reach the body, they deal damage and bounce off?
@psylawkson

Yeah, they can’t hold onto the body, but they can take care of all the furry joints to bring down his defensive shroud. Then you can just gather them up and throw directly at the body. Makes for a quick fight, so he doesn’t even cross to the other arena with the fire traps.

Pikmin is one of my favorite game series ever. I love the gameplay and the feeling of the world you’re in running around in it feels cozy but mysterious and the music is great also. Good memories playing pikmin 2 on my GameCube when I was younger even though I kind of sucked at it back then and didn’t get it like I do now but I’ve just appreciated it more over the years

It’s not too late for pikmin to become mainstream!!!!! Pikmin is really starting to get known now after the release of pikmin 4. I’ve seen more memes than ever before from this game! Still working on playing all of it! Really excited for the future of this franchise

I watched this video in the background while I was cooking and after you finished Pikmin 1 I was like, "wow, that was a great video!" And finally looked at the title and runtime 😅

It's kind of funny (in an unfortunate way) how he praised Pikmin 3 for so many reasons and then Pikmin 4 removed most of those reasons for the sake of basically just making an easy, handholdy version Pikmin 2 where they purposefully limit the number of pikmin you can use strictly so you have to use the dog. I see how Pikmin 2 fans are happy, but for Pikmin 3 fans it really feels like a step back for the series outside of the improved graphics and added inventory mechanic.

I think there's a lot for Pikmin 3 fans to enjoy in Pikmin 4, but it's obviously more inspired by and for the Pikmin 2 fans. It's really not a step back. If anything, its a lateral step just as Pikmin 2 was to Pikmin 1, but nonetheless is likely a problem they tried to address with the dandori challenges and Olimar Shipwreck Tale, and will have to continue dealing with moving forward.

This was fantastic to listen to at work! Really brightened my day :) Personally, I don't enjoy the Pikmin series because they stress me out too bad between the time limit and the Pikmin dying, but I wish I did because their atmosphere is incredible. (And sadly Pikmin Bloom doesn't work on my phone rip) I loved hearing how someone who does enjoy the gameplay tell me what they see in it, that was so cool, like someone picking out all the best bits for me ^^ Also I think maybe I should give Hey Pikmin a go, a puzzle platformer sounds a lot more my speed! Thank you so much for all of your efforts, you made my day and got me to appreciate a series in a new light :)

i remember i fell in love with this style of gameplay not with pikmin but with the overlord series of games and yes some people might find those games crude compared to pikmin but the series did get me searching for games like it and wo and behold i found the pikmin series and LOVED it.

i was a wii u fan, and pikmin 3 was one of the reasons because it used the gamepad so effectively. the first time i played was with my girlfriend, one of us would use the gamepad and the other would control the pikmin, it was a surprisingly fun and unique way to play together

I am extremely bad at playing pikmin, I don't think I've beaten a single one, but I really love the series nonetheless. I've always been sadened by how underappreciated it is, here's to Pikmin 4 helping it reach just a bit of a wider audience.

Maybe it wasn't a good way to reintroduce my mother to video games after she hadn't played one since the Legend of Zelda, but she did the same thing you did. She marched 100 pikmin right into the water, and paralyzed with the stressed sounds she sat there, unmoving, freaking out as they all perished. It actually upset her. She'll bring it up and talk about it over a decade later. I don't think I've seen another franchise generate that much connection with it's "pawns." It really is something else.

Weird idea that appeared in my head which I dub “The Ultimate Dandori Challenge” Basically, the challenge is to beat all four mainline Pikmin games using the same controller at the same time. I bet it would be extremely hard for those who aren’t already great at Dandori
