Some clarification for anyone worried about UV lights: This was not caused by standard stage lighting. The bored ape event in Hong Kong was using non-coated mercury vapor lamps, a special type of light only used in industrial and scientific equipment. Regular 'Black Light' fixtures use a mercury vapor tube that comes from the factory with a coating that only passes deep blue and near ultraviolet light, which is safe to view. Bare mercury vapor lamps emit a small amount of visible cyan glow and a large amount of deep ultraviolet, which is invisible to the eye but very harmful to tissue. I do not have any information about the production of this event, but I doubt that they were supplied by a reputable production company. In my experience as a lighting and laser tech in the US, it would be nearly impossible for this to happen at a professional production here. I don't have any experience in Hong Kong, but industry standards there appear very different.

Having lived in Hong Kong for most of my life I find it incredibly funny and ironic that the Ape event took place at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. It cost billions of dollars of taxpayer money, replaced one of the most iconic airports in the world (at least for aviation geeks) and not once have I ever seen a single cruise ever anchor there. so, as far as I understand, the issues people are having are a result of exposure to UV-C lamps, someone bought the germicidal kind of ultraviolet light, not the fun kind, but these kinds of lamps tend to have one really strong spike in the uv-c and relatively low emission of longer wavelength light, UV-C is high energy, but because of its short wavelength it’s really bad at penetrating more than a millimeter or two into the skin, you might get a mild sunburn, but you probably won’t meaningfully increase your risk of cancer or cataracts or anything. it still sucks though.

One reason why office workers may be at higher risk for developing malignant melanoma is their exposure to UVA wavelengths filtered through office windows. Lack of Vitamin D production from lack of sun exposure. Full spectrum sunlight exposure is necessary and beneficial. I hear they used UV-C lights, which aren’t cheap either. As in, they’d be significantly more expensive than standard stage UV lighting. Apparently they spent more money just to vaporize peoples eyeballs. I can’t imagine the motivation behind this if true other than spies infiltrating the nft community just to slander it from within. Or incompetence.

I read somewhere that the organizers wanted to be extra fancy and didn't use normal UV lamps made for stages and such, but super expensive industrial grade lamps. The ones used for sterilizing stuff. Tricky stuff 'cause it is invisible but causes the same kind of eye damage as any powerful light source.

I mean the eye damage is only a small part of the problem. Long term exposure to unfiltered UV light is linked to skin cancer.... it's the reason you're told to wear sunscreen because while the atmosphere does protect you from some of the UV light it does not protect you from all of it. It's the reason why tanning beds are so dangerous. This was completely moronic and, in my opinion, criminally negligent but I highly doubt they will be held accountable or even liable.
@caffeinatedpossum

A similar thing from a Big Clive video about fluorescent lamps: Someone thought they had bought a new cool looking clear variant of those harmless "blacklight" UVA fluorescent tubes that make certain things glow, but instead bought germicidal UVC-tubes (clear quartz-glass tube) and caused skin and eye problems to a bunch of people who reported smelling ozone at the hall. Normally fluorescent tubes are normal glass that won't even let that kind of UV through, with a fluorescent coating inside that converts the UV to visible light.

@@Mi_Fa_Volare Just google bored ape eye damage. Yes it happened this weekend in Hong Kong, and yes, it has happened BEFORE in Hong Kong. They had an art exhibit that looked like a bathroom, with paint splatters all over it and at the top of the wall was tons of germicidal UV-C lamps wrapping around the area, you can tell these are UV-C lamps because the tubes have standing-wave patterns in them that are unique to UV-C tubes. This happened at a prior event, and several people have also tried to use UV-C bulbs as decorative lighting at home, which didn't go too well for them.
