Good luck Steve! I’m just starting part-time this month (around 15 hours). What I will say is that I have always kept my listed stock in one large cupboard but I’ve had to warn my husband that it’s now going to spread through the house! So the cupboard is in my bedroom and that’s also where I keep bags of unlisted stock, but I’m going to take over another cupboard for listed and put shelves in the spare room (very heavily used as a bedroom by family and husband who works shifts) and I think I’m going to clear out the cupboard under the stairs to keep unlisted stock in there. By prepping for that now I can limit the mess I think 😂

I would just like to wish you all the very best luck. I have only recently discovered your channel, but can honestly say I thoroughly enjoy all your videos. You speak from the heart and convey a sense of someone who has long had the desire to break from the shackles of the daily grind to peruse their passion, but struggles to balance that with you commitments. I sincerely hope things work out for you and have no doubt that I will continue to enjoy your channel.

I too am starting up a secondhand book business selling on ebay etc. One way that I'm considering that may help with the storage problem is to initially put them on display in a secondhand emporium or perhaps more than one this way they are not sitting around doing nothing some will sell not so many I shouldn't think but maybe enough to cover the rental cost but most important to help solve the storage problem. Good luck!

Big congratulations. Regarding boxes/packaging you might have already done this but check the local area for warehouses, factories etc. Im lucky enough to work at a place which throws all its boxes and plastic packaging away so i get access to unlimited boxes, bubble wrap, air bags, flow pak etc. Have a look around and approach a few places. We have to pay to get waste collected and skips emptied so if you can them save space, you'll be saving them money.

Thank you! I should have made it clearer in the video but I was mostly thinking about plastic boxes for storage. I do really well for cardboard boxes and grab them from lots of shops and also have people in my local area who drop them off to me. 😄 Much better than them going to waste. Unfortunately I can’t find plastic boxes quite as easily. 👍🏻

it's scary at first but you're the boss now I have been working for myself since 2001 and being self employed has it's ups and downs, my only thing I can say is don't worry if you have a couple of bad days of sales as it tends to even out over the months, you will have good days and bad days, but at least you will not have someone telling you what to do, I could never go back to working for someone again good luck Steve and I wish you all the good luck in this exciting adventure, regards Cliff

Steve - big surprise but Good Luck. The more stock you acquire does need more organisation and a SKU system so you can always find orders. I sell quite a lot of books amongst other things and have a mixture of singles and small bundles on shelves and larger heavier book bundles in cardboard boxes which I always get for free but I make sure they are clearly labelled. As I have to store unlisted books near listed bundles I wrap the listed ones in clear pallet wrap to keep them apart & replace that bundle as soon as it has sold. I’m sure you will find your own way - it is lovely that your parter is being really supportive.

I don’t know if you watch Brum Reseller but he has a record shop that has loads of storage space out back so obviously he stores his stock there and packs it. Might be worth finding somewhere like that and using the front as a shop or renting the front out to a coffee shop maybe-books and coffee go well together like Foyles used to!
@SteveSpendsaPenny
Жыл бұрын
To be honest, that’s exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of. I’ve watched Brum for years so when I see all the space he’s got and all the records out the front that’s basically how I’d like something set up myself. The problem being is that the rent prices near me are a hell of a lot more. But it’s something I’m going to look into more anyway now I’ve got the time. 😊👍🏻

Hi Steve, Sorry, I've only just grabbed some time to actually watch the video. It sounds like you're heading into some pretty exciting times! I'd definitely be interested in seeing videos of how you work, building it into a full time business. Especially with it being about books! In terms of storage, I'm in a rented apartment so that's definitely an issue for me also. My plan is to eventually move into something like the Big Yellow Warehouse who can support with things like taking in deliveries and I believe they can also help with postage. I thought that sounded like a decent option for doing it around full time work. I don't know if it's something that may be worth looking into, as you start to collect more stock/list more. I expect there are much cheaper options though... like building a shed!
@SteveSpendsaPenny

Thank you! I have considered Big Yellow as there’s one fairly close to me but will have to see if it’s worth it really. I’m sure I’ll find something though, especially now I’ve got the time and opportunity to go for it.

Good luck. Too scary for me ! Love reselling as a side line but would be terrified to rely on it completely. On storage boxes - I find the problem is finding boxes of a regular size so they can be stacked. Especially when picking up free ones or cheap ones. I always eye up the stacking bread trays outside my local shop they look convenient to stack and give easy access to the contents - but not sure if anyone gives these away !!

I don't understand the part where you say it's difficult finding boxes. Do you not have a large Tesco nearby? Inside the store they constantly have cages of flat packed boxes as they're putting out stock, and the wine section has a permanent cage with booze and wine boxes that they actively encourage you to use/take.

Thank you. If you’re buying to resell then you’re basically a business (albeit probably self employed) so you would be best to set up a business account on eBay. I’ve heard stories of people having their reselling personal accounts closed down by eBay and then they can’t reopen them so to me it’s not worth the risk.
