Also, there's a general loneliness and anxiety going around that makes any positive attention, even if it comes from a bad place, seem validating (someone sees me as an individual!)

Everything is political in some way. Stories, regardless of The topic, are taken from real experiences, and here in western culture politics is a huge part of life. Take comics. Back in WWII Superman and Batman were used to promote the allied war effort. The MCU deal with race in Falcon and the Winter Soilder. The list goes on. Ben Shapiro is right wing and gets mad at anything even remotely left leaning. This was a pretty tame video for him. He's like that kid who has someone else write his book report while still presenting it himself without reading it first. He realizes that as long as he talks fast and confident it doesn't matter what you say. Most of his videos are that way.

Politics is just who gets what where, when, how, and why. The fundamental relationship of this is the group vs. the individual. This is determined through either diplomacy (which is politics without war) and war (politics without diplomacy). So even when you're living on your own in the wilderness, there's still a division of resources. Every conflict on the planet is political, always has been, and always will be. People who have all their wants, desires, and needs met (which describes no one) don't have conflicts, which makes for boring story telling. Who the fuck wants to watch a movie about gods doing nothing? Because that's probably the only "non-political" story you could make.

I have the opposite expectations for series and movies. I actually expect movies to have airtight stories cause its an entire experience condensed in a very short, high quality time. A series has a lot more time and leeway, so story can get away with being sloppier and it gets hidden in the quantity. That said, i think everyone in general could raise their standards for entertainment. Studios make absurd amounts of money and pay writers peanuts, and the audience throwing money at sloppy writting is part of it. Reward quality and quality will multiply.

I hugely respect that you can watch this without screaming. As a former rightwinger, once I got out of the "I'm going to look at a thing in the world and mentally jujitsu it into whatever perverted form will motivate me to vote Republican next election" cult mindset, Ben Shapiro is incredibly triggering. But there's been so much discussion of his review that I figured this was a form I could actually get through heh. P.s. the thing about not engaging with points that are open to legitimate criticism is because this isn't a work of criticism, it's just a template a Republican or right-leaning independent can use to twist something that might otherwise cause cognitive dissonance into a form that motivates them to continue voting Republican. There's no genuine honestly or intellectual engagement at all. He's just a billionaire funded propagandist doing his job. For example in the NYT bestseller list, his book had a note made that it appeared most of the sales were bulk purchases made to inflate his apparent intellectual credentials.

Politics can be a great many things; possibly as diverse as the number of people with opinions. In that respect it reflects us and the environment in which we exist. While I'd accept that there's often more than one route to a destination and that people can argue over how to achieve common goals, I find most of the political media from the south to be disingenuous and motivated largely by speaking fees and advertising.

A common act is using shaming language like “who hurt you” or “do you need a hug” if they see things differently. You taking something as a joke doesn’t mean others do. You may have felt the movie didn’t have a happy ending but there is a vast amount of people who loved the feminist message…making posters of America’s speech. Expressing the whole “embrace autonomy and find yourself for a better life” ideology to something that was created for partnership is like people going to other countries and telling them how to live because they “do it right”.
