(please read whole entry) in regards to Lord Licorice, i totally bought into the whole villain aspect because no kid i knew liked licorice when i was little.(i grew up with the earliest version to have the cardboard lore dump, so the second version?) licorice was always supposed to be bitter, have an unrecognizable flavor, and be generally hard to chew, so no wonder he was cast in the villain role. but now i feel different, like you i want to have my cake and eat it too while still mostly sticking to tradition. so in my headcannon, instead of being evil, Lord Licorice is just very strict, pragmatic, and no-nonsense. helping King Kandy to run the kingdom is serious business after all, so he wouldn't be too keen on a couple of small loud children just barging into the front door of his comparatively spartan, East-European-inspired castle. his fiefdom in Candyland borders the Gumdrop Mountains and, like licorice itself, is one of the oldest provinces in the kingdom, keeping a few older candy traditions that have fallen to the wayside elsewhere. the countryside is rockier than the Gumdrop mountains, rich in humongous rock candy veins and deposits, mostly in warm colors: red, orange yellow, and yes a darker purple. combined with the red and black licorice trees with black leaves, and the rock candy pigments seeping into the topsoil and grass, the province has the appearance of an almost perpetual Autumn. the people tend to be very traditional, so appear standoff-ish and distrustful to citizens from other provinces, leading to a poorer reputation overall.

This was so fun! I am 100% behind your plan to "be chill, Nathan, you don't have to do everything at once" this is very smart! I would very much be interested in seeing more characters from this world redesigned in the future!! I had the same board you did as a kid, and I had NO IDEA there were so many re-issues that changed so much! Definitely a fan of the way you combined the various versions into the Peppermint Forest part - all that's missing is his figure-skater husband twirling in the background! :3 Ohh, maybe he could be a gymnast instead, like, swinging in the trees like trapezes! Your art always gives me great new ideas! Love love LOVE what you did with King Licorice! I didn't personally notice the problematic design aspects, so I'm glad you pointed them out and addressed them the way you did. AND kept his lovely locs :) The Cola Sea, tho, put me in mind of blood swamps from Dark Souls games, like, cuz the reds are so saturated, I think? For more Cola vibes, maybe it needed more bubbles around the floats... IDK, it's not mine to judge! Proud of you for identifying the source of the problem - that you don't have the skills in business management - AND retaining your confidence in your illustration skill, cuz it's true! His pirate design was pretty interesting/far out I didn’t mind that one at all! (Also had great hair) Soda foam/bubble is surprisingly hard to draw! I need to do some experimenting, because it would likely also help itch drawing regular sea foam. I attempted to add some fizz but the brush I used didn’t have the texture I wanted. Maybe I’ll browse the internet to find some new ones! Yeah, it’s a learning curb but nothings impossible! I’m nothing if not optimistic

Your redesign of Licorice's character is remarkable! You made him from a villain to a hero, clever creation of you 😉. I like his western style on him, he's a cowboy or sheriff. The licorice dreadlocks look great on him. I never heard about the Ice Cream Floats located before I too grew up with Ice Cream Sea and the Snow Flakes Lake. Queen Frostine is now a mermaid, she's beautiful too, giving her see-through hair so majestic! I like the concept idea of Ice Cream Floats called "It's always summer and the ice cream never melts" sounds like a motto. I grew up with Mr.Mint the jolly peppermint lumperjack character and he's fun guy. So your Mr.Mint is now a beefy lumberjack has a son who a wheelchair person, have representation is wonderful. So what would you name Mr. Mint's son? I have some suggestions Eales named after Dr. Eales first person identified in Hertfordshire, England or Jonathan name after John Ray who published peppermint plant in 1696 for his second edition of his book Synopsis Methodica Stirpium Britannicarum. Your Candy Land characters redesign are fantastic! I look forward to seeing you redesigning the rest of characters someday. Who knows, Maybe you could create your original characters for the game.
