I’m not too sure how much research she did. Quinacridone Gold (PO 49 - pigment orange 49) was bought by Daniel Smith, so they could continue to produce that color until the supply ran out. It in no way is a metallic or iridescent gold as shown. She or Stuart Simple need to research the correct information and revise, as this is disingenuous.
@hollykurtz3840

Michael Towers yes!! this marketing feels predatory and misleading, as it’s relying on outrage without actually showing people what Quin gold looked like. Just for the records and to be fair - Daniel Smith did not really 'monopolize' the supply of QuinGold - by buying up all the last remaining supply at that time, when the manufacturer decided to not make it anymore, they at least were able to ensure being able to serve the art-world with this pigment for some more years... when nobody else was - without DanielSmith having invested in buying the pigment, artists would have run out of the pigment many years earlier - This happens with all kinds of pigments all the time ! Car-manufacturers, as one of the main and biggest markets and initiators for finding new colours and pigments, demand a certain colour/new colour/special colour... and that pigment gets introduced into other markets, fashion, plastics, textiles, etc etc... , and eventually the art-world, too... and then, at some time, the manufacturer finds that demand for that colour diminishes world wide and decides to stop making it... and then eventually the art world and everybody else is left with having to figure substitute-mixtures to mimic that colour - as, for ecample, 'quinacridone golds' are made of a mix of other pigments, not the original single-pigment-colour anymore - and various brands come up with various mixtures to approximate the original as close as possible - The art market is simply not a large enough market for a pigment-manufacturer to create a particular pigment for, so many colours can end up going the way of the dodo - As an aside, (I have no investment/connection/benefit/... ... to and with or from the company DanielSmith) but I know enough about them to say the fellow running that family company, John Cogley, absolutely loves- and cares about working with artists and providing good, worthy, quality, service at reasonable cost - and, surely, their watercolours are indeed one of the top-brands around these days - watch his many you-tube session talking and presenting the various pigments, the company, and some behind-the-scenes info, too - very much worth it for learning about how pigments work, how interference-/luminescent-/metallic pigments... work, and much more - and, just to be clear, QuinGold is *not* a metallic pigment to begin with -

I heard about the real Quin Gold, PO49, and bought a half pan of it when a watercolour maker in the UK made a new batch of it...but I don't have an older Daniel Smith version to compare. The new version of Quin Gold with PY150 makes different colours when mixed. There's a funny story of an art teacher doing a class and the students following along freaked out because they couldn't recreate the colour mixes using the new version.

What a bizarre thing for Stuart to do. Quinacridone (pronounced kwin-ACK-ri-doan) Gold by Daniel Smith was never intended to be a reflective gold. It was a beautiful color for watercolors, but for Stuart to act like Daniel Smith was trying to keep it from people is just strange to me.

Exactly, Daniel smith didn’t have any sort of monopoly on it, they just had a large supply of the pigment as they’re one of the leading watercolor brands. The pigment was still available to other companies for purchase. It’s just that the pigments used by the art world are usually excess from automotive industries. No one wanted their car this color so the production of the pigment stopped. Daniel sloth didn’t buy all of the pigment, the pigment simply stopped being produced.

I wonder how this holds up against Citadel, Reaper Master Series, Valejo and miniature companies. I've used the goldest gold paint for miniature stuff, and with high gloss varnish it looks like real gold metal, the only thing I have to complain about is that unless you put it over black it has little to no depth, real gold has deep green and brown shadows. It's a flat gold color

I think that the undercoat of the blackest black helped the gold paint look like gold leaf. I took a college level calligraphy course when I was in college, and we learned how to gild. Tinting the gesso red or black really affected the finished look of the metal leaf. So keep that in mind when using gold paint. You might get the result you want by doing a colored undercoat. It's really cool to see how the leaf changes color eheb different colored undercoats are applied. Also, calligraphy lettering isn't easy to learn, but it's not difficult to use a dip pen in your artwork. Pens and nibs aren't expensive, and the very fine nibs used in Manga are a great tool for any artist.

i feel like Stuart Semple's product quality has dropped off as he pumps out so many new products so quickly. I was already super unimpressed with the mirror paint (which, by all means, isn't mirror, but chrome) and now here there's gold paint that not only looks the same but is cheaper. It wouldn't bother me so much if he didn't ride such a high horse with the "goldest gold", "blackest black", "pinkest pink" kinda stuff. He pretends like his paints are superior to all others, it's literally in the name, and they're just not. Or at least not anymore.

I thinks it’s a brand at this point cause if I recall he has a “greenest green” paint as well...also the mirror paint was very unimpressive for the expectations same with the gold.

The worst part? PO49 Quinacridone Gold still exists because it’s a synthetic pigment made in labs💀. Daniel Smith was the first watercolor company to sell Quinacridones to the public, which is why the manufacturer of Quin Gold offered to sell it to them. Daniel Smith then continued to sell it to the public for 17 years at the usual low prices (quinacridones are often cheaper b/c you can literally make more) instead of price gauging. The pigment went extinct in the fine arts industry because it’s too expensive for paint companies to make. Most non-historic pigments are bought from the auto industry, and Quin Gold wasn’t the first (or last) pigment to disappear b/c car manufacturers stopped buying it. Stuart Semple is just trying to generate outrage and fabricated drama so people buy his paints 💀💀

Stuart is a hype man. Quin gold isnt a shiny, reflective gold. Daniel Smith bought the pigment and sold it for a reasonable cost until the supply ran out a few years ago. I have some of the tubes myself. Beautiful color and nothing like what stuart created. Or should i say private labeled? Im onto you stuart. Dislike the clickbait
@gostowl

Thank you! I like that Semple is making good quality, affordable paints available, but he over-hyped this one. I started doing more research into the watercolor community and painting a few years back, which was a few months before Daniel Smith’s supply of the pigment finally ran out. From what I recall, the larger watercolor community was upset about the loss because DS’s quinacridone gold was such a lovely warm yellow, so it and DS’s other mixes with it wouldn’t be available anymore. There was no complaint about DS having a “monopoly” on the pigment, just a well-thought business decision a decade prior. What annoys me about Semple’s argument against DS is that their supply *had already run out* by the time he announced his plans to create it. I only knew about Semple’s gold paint because a watercolorist I followed brought it up in an incredulous tone and pointed out the unnecessary fake conflict.

Agreed. It's not like with Anish Kapor where he was petty and didn't want to make the material available to other artists, even for a price. Daniel Smith purchased the pigment and sold it to artists rather then let it sit unused in a warehouse. Stuart better be careful or he's going to become just as petty and uppity as Anish Kapor.
@lotofmalarkey434
3 жыл бұрын
I agree, I don’t feel like they deserve the Anish Kapoor treatment. The original company was incapable of making more pigment so it would go extinct anyway. If they were charging exorbitant amounts of money and copyrighting the word quinacridone I’d get it, but it seems a little self-righteous otherwise.
@FearlessFighterAkida

I mean, tbf its understandable he wouldn't want someone affiliated with DS buying the paint, them manufacturing it, and then reselling it. So i think it's less him hating DS or treating them the same way, but rather so they don't basically use his formula for their paints which is understandable since he is an independent artist not a large scale pigment manufacturer.
@aprilbrown8081

I came to the comments looking just for this. I missed out on the original DS quin gold, but I bear no ill will. They’d still be selling it to all of us if they had it. And yes, I was very confused about how this was a dupe for that. I think he’s overstepped here. Maybe he could just make a gold paint without starting a fight?

I've used sally hansen color foil nail polish usually the chrome and the gold for various art projects because it has a better mirrored finish than any paint I've been able to find and it's pretty inexpensive it can be brushed or used in a sprayer without clogging it. A little tip I've learned through the years is if you use a metallic silver or chrome under coat it helps gold paint pop and have a more mirrored metallic finish
