As always, a great video. This one brings back fond memories. In the 1950's we would camp on the beach in North Carolina near Moorehead City .We camped in a bread truck my Dad converted into a Motorhome, great times ! The only fishing rods we had were light fresh water trout rods with mismatched spinning reels. I learned the basics of fishing at that time and as an active 72 year old in Colorado am so very thankfull for those great times in the surf. We caught mostly grunts {?}, and an occasional ( highly prized) Pompano. Love your channel, your family and your testimony.

Great video as always! I'm happy to see that you had success with a "freshwater" setup. Being new to the coastal area (Savannah), I don't have a lot of saltwater tackle yet (though my wife thinks I do! LOL!), and it's encouraging to see that I can use some of my freshwater gear and not feel like I have to spend a small fortune. It was also informative watching you fight fish that were testing the limits of your rod/reel. Thanks!

I use a7 ft light action rod with a1000 series reel, 10lb braid and 6lb flouro leader. I fish this in SW Fla and will catch all types of fish. Small to medium snook are a ball. I have noticed I catch bigger whiting this way vs larger tackle, even the steelhead setup.

On a light rig like that, bubble and grub, bubble and fly, carolina riged grubs, flies, or ice spikes, small swimbaits, the smallest rattle traps or rattlin raps, and small minnow plugs, and 1/8 kastmasters are all great producers - and big fish WILL hit them if they are around. Elephants eat peanuts sometimes.

That was great. A lot of folks see massive 12ft poles, heavy line and big reel at the beach and think you have to have massive gear to surf fish. Not true... unless you fish rough surf like me (east coast), 2-5 ft waves usually, and have to launch 4oz + sputnik sinkers to get the bait to stick. The bait and fish themselves are smallish, but long casts with heavy sinkers require 9ft + heavy rods, 30lb minimum braid, 40 lb. mono leader for the shock, and a reel with a large capacity spool. Wish I had whiting right next to the beaches I fish, what a blast.

Matt, a 4 or 5 foot rod like that I would call a "Brookie" rod. But, several years ago I bought several "Crappie" rods at Gander Mountain. Three of them were 8 footers and one was a 10 footer. The 8 footers I use for stream trout, coho jacks, lake whitefish, walleye and smallies and the 10 footer I use for adult salmon and steelhead. It appears that "crappie"rods have enough backbone to handle larger fish. Good video.

FYI...my favorite light surf rod is an 11' Lews crappie jigging rod that I cut down to 10' and glued on a new tip top. I've caught pomps, whiting, everything else, and even landed a 37" red two years ago. It will handle 2 oz weights with soft, lob casts. Only costs about half to a third of what a name rod costs, BTW.

Nice video and nice fish. Here's what I do so I always have a measuring device with me. Spread your fingers as wide as you can and measure from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your pinky. Note that measurement. Use that measurement to measure your fish. If it comes too close to the "size limit", I err on the side of caution.

7 or 8 foot ultralight with a 3000-4000 reel spooled with 8-10 pound crystal braid shorecasting in the salt with yozuri pin minnows and small swimbaits? Hillarious. 3 pound jacks fight like marlin on that setup. Once hooked a MONSTER ladyfish (they get BIG in hawaii. Like better than 10+ pounds) now i know why they call them "hawaiian tarpon" Took half an hour to land, almost spooled me twice... good times.

We use to fish for crappie in the spillways of North Mississippi back in the summer of the 1980's and would catch spoonbill catfish over 10 lbs. Did this using a Dwaiwa minispin with 4lb test line. You had to move where they moved to be able to land them.

I've always enjoyed light tackle fishing. Personally, it's just not any fun for me to catch small fish like whiting on heavier tackle. I don't understand doing that at all. I also strongly believe lighter line and smaller terminal tackle makes your bait much more attractive. And if you hook a big red or whatever, so be it if you can't land him.

You could use your body to measure things. Take a tape measure pinch it on your fingers put your arm out and measure to your shoulder. Then measure from the tip of your fingers to your elbow. I have 18 inches from the tip of my fingers to my elbow, which is a good measurement. You can extrapolate how long is where the tail comes on your arm.. if your tail reaches your elbow from the tips of your pinched gather middle finger and thumb, you know it’s 18 inches. Knowing the links of different parts of your body like your hand and elbow, you can measure things not perfectly but fairly well.
