I don't use handhelds for gaming, but I've always had a similar mindset with cellphones. I will say it's a tough line to tread because it's not as easy as strapping on a larger battery cause that directly increases the weight. IPhones took so long to catch up on battery sizes until they saw people were willing to put up with the weight for the battery life
@Matt__B
4 жыл бұрын
There's a 57Wh battery and the TDP can be set to 15W so four hours isn't out of the question with it. Most people who've got their hands on one have been testing it at max performance to find out what it's capable of rather than trying to eke out the battery for as long as possible, so we've not really got that good an idea how well it'd fare when tuned for battery life. However, with many demanding emulators doing most of their processing on a single thread and only making sporadic use of the GPU, it's entirely possible they'd still perform well on such a setup. Hopefully someone can give it a go.

I wish you'd use your influence with GPD and other companies to get one of them to make a Vita clone with 100% FLOSS on it, from the bootloader on up, the linux-libre kernel instead of vanilla Linux, no binary blobs anywhere, hardware like CPU, GPU, wifi etc chosen because it is 100% FLOSS compatible, a full size card slot for "cartridges" - SD being the most practical but XD or CF being preferable because they're bigger with more room for game logos and artwork. Have an XMB style GUI like DinguXMB or GP2XMB, NOT focused on pirated ROMs with logos of past consoles like RetroArch's XMB or most other devices in this category, but FLOSS games like SuperTux, SuperTux Cart Racer, freeDoom, OpenArena, and other games such as those on onpon4.github.io/articles/libre-games.html or libregamewiki.org/Main_Page. They could offer the games as dowloads via an elementary OS style App Center "pay what you want" model, plus physical game carts with the logo and art on the cart, in a box with manual etc for a fair price. This would get the FSF "Respects Your Freedom" certification and be part of their holiday gift giving guide, but of course users could wipe or modify the installed software and put whatever proprietary stuff on it they want, including ROMs - the device would not be locked down against its own user. That way the retro community would still get a great handheld and I'm sure an OS image with their preferred UI and cores would be up online almost immediately.

Honestly, as someone who has a 2012 laptop and a very weak 2015 tablet, this seems like a device that you need to treat with a different mindset. This isn't a toy at $800, and if someone can go from carrying a Win 2, a Switch, and an I7S to just using this thing, and even editing videos directly on it, it has stopped being a toy, and is now simply a laptop designed for a specific subset of people. Don't compare this to a Switch or to a Desktop PC (Laptops have always been more expensive than desktops of similar capacity). Compare it with a similarly spec laptop. @jvalex18, if you can find me such a laptop, I'll buy one (you'd be doing me a favor, actually). =)
@techfreakjames
4 жыл бұрын
@jvalex18 a) the win max is only $780 when you preorder. Your price of $880 is the retail after the campaign, b) the laptop you provided is nowhere near comparable. The win max is around 800 grams or 1.7 pounds. The laptop in the link is 4.76 pounds (2x - 3x the weight). Win Max has 16GB of ram, the HP only has 8gb. and the laptop is 15.6 inch, nowhere near to being handheld size. There is no way I'm carrying anything that heavy now. I'd rather sacrifice a little bit of power than portability. I worked with a 12" Thinkpad for over 10 years but after a couple of years with the 7" GPD Pocket, I'm never going back to a full-size laptop, let alone a 15 inch.
@techfreakjames
4 жыл бұрын
Like I said (and any other reviewer who has reviewed any GPD Product), GPD has a very niche market. Anyone who prefers a gaming PC or a full-size laptop is not part of that niche. GPD caters to people who like mega portability. I backed the Pocket 1 and now the Win Max because I love that level of portability. I didn't back the Win 2 because I'm not a fan of thumb typing. The Win Max basically has the gaming buttons of the Win 2, the keyboard typing layout of the Pocket 1 (which I prefer over the Pocket 2 and P2 Max), the build quality of the Micro PC (judging by the ports and the large airvents as well as the rugged looking construction), and the increased screen size that's closer to the P2 Max (while still being handheld). This is perfect for me (well... until GPD comes out with a Win Max 2, which could be 2-4 years from now). To me, the closest thing to a competitor would be the One GX, but it's a) nowhere near to completion as the Win Max, b) does not have the same level of sustainability as GPD Products (if you try looking for batteries for the Pocket and One Mix 2S, there's no contest as to availability), and c) I don't like the design where the screen doesn't take advantage of the entire width of the product. It exposes the gaming buttons when inside a bag and the screen is not as large as it could be.

@@KP-48-007 it costs $900. You can get a powerful gaming laptop for that price. This thing is too big and heavy to be a handheld and too underpowered to be a gaming device. I think the company that made it are just trying to see how much price gouging they can get away with.

At this point I really have to wonder though. $800 for the GPD win max, plus $500 for an eGPU. That's $1300. At this price, you're much better off with a small 12" or 13" gaming laptop with a bluetooth controller. You'll have better specs and more versatility. I love small handheld but I feel like the epgu kind of breaks the appeal of this one.
@jurassicjimjim

Yeah I thought like this too. But the form factor with built in controls I think make such a difference. Same way that I play my switch all the time at home even though I have a PS4 that will provide a much better experience. The egpu can be updated over time too. Once the enclosure has been bought that's the main cost so you can drop a new graphics card in 3 years later when that laptop is old news.

:) used to love my win1 and win2 a lot. But I totally gave up after my win2 broken 3 times. 1st one was completely shutting down w/o any reason after only 1 month using => i had to ask the distributor for help, they sent it back to GPD for warranty. I had no explanation from the distributor or GPD about my device's condition also, but I do believe that mine had mysterious powering down issue that pp keep talking on reddit (I got 6 months warranty from the distributor and it took ab 2months for warranty process. I kept using it for ab 2 months more and the next problem happened) 2rd time was broken hindge and bulged battery. I ordered replacement items on aliexpress and replaced them by myself cause of expired warranty! Besides, I just couldn't find any place that should fix it properly, I had no choice but fix it by myself! The fact is I found tons of people who is frustrated finding a place to repair their device as myself and they share each others tips or tutorial to fix common issues as what i was doing by that time .... lol Finally, 3rd time was black screen 1 month ago and I left my device on my drawer quietly, no more repair :) Besides, I had some prob with my win1 also, keep shutting down and restarting reguarly 🙏 I do love the GPD win concept, it will be super cool hybird device, BUT with a poor quality and pricy price, I did have so many bad experiences with this device. Therefore, i grab nintendo switch instead. At least, its really easy to repair and mantain for long life using. I do hope GPD can make a better device's durability or at least easier procedure for warranty!!! when your device has prob, you just know where to fix it!

Luan Doan The hinge on my Win 2 broke as well which make it unusable because the screen kept moving if I played and eventually the ribbon connecting it to the screen ripped. I would try to use my Win 1 since my Win 2 but it kept randomly shut off and restart so I gave up on using my GPD devices.

If you have ps4, you go to sony. However, if you have broken GPD device, you know nowhere to ask for help :))))

I don't think you're completely wrong. The eGPU thing is still mind boggling for me. The sole purpose of these portable handheld devices, for me anyways, is to be able to use them on the go. If I'm home, I'll simply use my desktop and play games there. So I do not see the purpose of connecting it to an eGPU if I can just use my desktop. And I don't think carrying the eGPU would be very efficient.

Not just for gaming. I would have told them to add a webcam for video calling or live streaming. Also, make it a rotating screen to be used as a tablet. I also think they might be able to make it slimmer and lighter. Looking forward also to an AMD ryzen version.
