@@DustinRecklingThat scene was, I would venture to say, the best in the entire series. Her delivery, tone and cadence were what we all came to expect from Bea Arthur. It’s a shame that the writers couldn’t have given her more opportunities to demonstrate that here. Then again, I also would like to have seen what she, as Maude Findlay, would have done in the halls of Congress. (That’s a reference to the three-part series finale of “Maude”.) But, as you observed, without the missed opportunity which was “Amanda’s”, we simply would not have had “The Golden Girls” just a couple of years later.

I forgot about this show, but now I think I vaguely remember seeing ads for it. But I don't remember watching any episodes. If I did watch any of the early episodes, I was probably put off by how rude Amanda was to her guests. It's ironic that Betty White starred in a previous Fawlty Towers adaptation before ending up together with Bea on Golden Girls. It's also ironic that when Golden Girls ended and Bea left, the rest of the cast took over a struggling hotel called the Golden Palace. It's like it came full circle. In fact, now I vaguely remember that when I first heard about Golden Palace, I think it reminded me of Amanda's premise. It's weird you say they reran this show on A&E. I mean, why rerun a show that did not do well? It's also interesting that the guy who played the burglar/robber in this show also played a burglar/robber/ex con on Soap. And on this show, he talked about a guy he knew named Dutch, while that was the name of the burglar on Soap. And Soap's production company was the same one that created Golden Girls, so I wonder if Amanda's was also the same producers.

I remember vaguely watching ‘Amanda’s’ when it first aired for a few episodes before giving up on it because I had loved her so much in ‘Maude.’ A year or so ago, I watched all the episodes and like you noticed the inconsistency of not having Kevin McCarthy around for Episodes 11 and 12 before his eventual return in Episode 13, the last produced one. An actor I know through Facebook guested in that last episode as the young minister. I asked him afterwards what he remembered about Bea from his short time on the set. He said she was not in a good mood for the week he was there. Considering what she was sold on when she signed on and what it ended up being, I could understand why she wasn’t a happy camper. Plus, she’d likely heard the show was being cancelled by that point so being unemployed again probably erased any joy from her soul as well. Thankfully Susan Harris came along with her Golden Girls’ pilot script and thankfully Rue McClanahan was able to talk Bea into giving another go at a TV series. After ‘Amanda’s,’ I can appreciate why she was hesitant to give it another go. But millions are happy she did! Thanks, Dustin, for this look back at the deep valley in Bea Arthur’s career.
