Oh yes, I remember removing the hard drive in these iBooks. We obtained about 400 of these from a school. My tech had it down pat and could upgrade a hard drive in no time. These had multiple colours and we assembled a 5 coloured iBook and sold it on eBay to someone in Singapore!

For those wondering why Apple makes this so hard, the answer is easy. When this laptop was around they made an obscene amount of money on repairs and if they made it as easy as say pc's of the same time they would lose revenue.

No, the repair process for consumer products back then, like today, is "replace unit." Higher-end stuff, I will say, can be darn easy to work on (Powermac G3's process: Open case with lever, unscrew one screw).
@jammi__

In the same era, the PowerBooks just exposed everything by removed the keyboard in a similar fashion to this one. Basically pull keyboard release latches, pop the keyboard off and you can just pull off hard drives, ram, the cpu and airport card. Batteries and optical drives were hot-swappable and have ergonomic release levers. The reason the iBook was made this difficult was probably more along the lines of rather selling PowerBooks to the professionals. The same pattern regarding HDD replacement followed until the MacBooks replaced iBooks and MacBook Pro's replaced PowerBooks and made HDD changing easy again.
@wonderpierrot

This is so ridiculous, you literally have to take the entire computer apart just to upgrade the hard drive. Way to go Apple! I'm glad I got a nice Pismo PowerBook instead of an iBook. The HDD upgrade on the PowerBook is not user serviceable but is a snap to replace.

Every laptop has its downfall, especially the smaller they get, some laptops have to be taken completely apart to replace the keyboard while Apple made it extremely easy here. Some laptops may make it easy to replace HDs while Apple made it difficult here. Laptops are tricky. Modern Chromebooks are almost as bad as this.

Your guidance, in concert with the ifixit step-by-step directions, made this something a relative newbie like me could get through in an afternoon. Now my 300 Mhz Blueberry iBook, which I had added to my curio cabinet based on the lack of secure browsers back in 2009 or so, has a new life. Having discovered Classilla and having an extra 120 GB SSD handy I found a PATA-to-SATA connector at Amazon and went to town. Now my last-millennium machine boots it in half the time it used to (50 seconds v 105), and runs in utter and complete silence...probably with better battery life to boot without having to drag a mechanical device along for the ride. I appreciated the warnings about managing all those screws...perhaps an ice tray would have been useful. I'm just glad I got it back into one working piece....

This is going to be one hell of a lot of disassembly just to get to the little daughter board it looks like the jack is mounted to. I'd like to skewer the designers with metal spikes for this nightmare! This is actually worse than the original Toshiba Satalite laptops I used to repair back in the day. Those were horrible. I need two screws to get access to RAM and my harddrove on my IBM Thinkpad. Moreover you get a complete dissassembly and resassembly guide ("Maintenance manual") for free on lenovo's website. Compared to my unibody macbook, where especially removing the bottom cover is very difficult, it's a piece of cake. The Macbook-Air series is one of the most difficult notebooks to service. This is why I prefer the old IBM T series. You remove the drive with a single screw holding the drive holder, then pull. Unscrew the old drive from the holder, screw the new drive in, insert into the drive bay and tighten that one screw. Apple seems to hate upgrading above all things.

I love apple but this ibook was designed with no easy option for a rudimentary hard drive and memory upgrade. Thats where the IBM think pads shined. Big blue thought ahead and made accommodations to its users. It only took one screw to access the hard driven. Present day Mac book pros and ibooks are just as labor intensive. You have to be slow and patient or your strip the screw, scratch the aluminum body or put a dent.

+Andrés Pubdisco There is nothing you can really do. First off, forget about watching online videos on it. It's way, way too outdated and slow for this task. Even G4 iBooks can't struggle with this, so don't expect anything from a G3. Second, webpages also are quite heavy these days. You could install Classilla, which is a browser for older Macs running OS X 10.3 and below. It loads mobile sites instead of full sites. But again, don't expect miracles. This is a 15+ year old machine, it's not going to do well on the modern, JavaScript heavy internet.
