Why did you mostly review espresso makers with built in grinders?
@dpie4859

I have to strongly object to this winner. All fully automatic coffee machines like this where the grinding and coffee extraction takes place in the same box you can be 100% sure you will have mold growing and it’s impossible to keep it clean. Go for the Breville - and if you can afford it get the Oracle touch.

I love my Breville Oracle Touch. It took me a week to dial in the infuse, the brew time (30sec.) And correct grind. Now I have my setting saved. I.5 years later, I have the same expresso taste that i had with my Sylvia with a pid. Oracle touch is much cleaner, and I no longer have to tamp.

Mold is highly dependent on the type of super automatica you purchase and how you maintain. You certainly do have a point though that it does happen a fair deal - I've had a jura grow mold - and should have been a factor. Keep in mind these guys are the "everyman" of reviews and don't dive that deep (in my opinion) into any one area, especially not one as rich as espresso machines. I'm actually not too fond of the Breville. Maybe I'm just counter culture and they are bit too mass market for me, but I never found them to give me the best cup. I like Quickmill (Silvano) or La Pavoni.

@@lrom5445 ATC normally test very extensive so I am surprised they missed this. In Germany many people are quite upset with the manufacturers of super automatica due to this problem. I know that there are better machines then the Oracle touch and that it has its limitations in how you can adjust things. But, and this is a big BUT, the Oracle is extremely easy to use( for my wife) and it makes better coffee than 95% of coffee house such as Starbucks etc. Its a good balance between very good coffee a usability. Its also easy to clean.
@lrom5445

@@dpie4859 I think they extensively test, but not widely and not in the way coffee experts would. Because they aren't specifically experts in coffee, they test in a general way - probably testing the top selling X brands. Some things, like espresso machines, don't work that way since the top sellers tend to be the most mass manufactured. I think ATK does show some weakness in very specialized gear like this, and are most suited when dealing with common used kitchen items. I think that's why they missed that factor, since it's something you learn from using espresso gear frequently and owning super automaticas. Breville is just not my favorite, but if it works for your situation, that's great. Coffee is very subjective and nobody can really say what's best for you except you.

I have the Breville too. I've been brewing 2 to 4 cups of espresso (1 - 2 lattes and 1 to 2 americanos every morning) regularly for about a year and a half. Part of the appeal for me is the ceremony of making the coffee. I can tweak water temperature, grind size and quantity, and total water volume. It's important since the style, age, and roast of your beans can vary with each batch. Also, fully automatic espresso machines feel too much like a vending machine to me.

The Nespresso pods cost about 35 cents a piece (purchased through Amazon for example) which is a pretty decent price point for an awesome no hassle shot of espresso. The pods themselves... Nespresso has a recycling program for them. As much as I like Nespresso for the ease of use, if you have several people in the household that like espresso, you'll run through pods quick because its so easy to make.
@shortrefmegaref

A doubleshot of espresso uses about 14 to 20g of coffee, which for $20/kg beans is about 32cents a shot. I'm not sure if nespresso does double or single though. And you have to take in to account the cost of the machine, the barista express is the least amount of money you have to spend to get "real" espresso, and nespresso machines are -much- cheaper, so nespresso is probably cheaper even in the long run, however it doesn't make "true" espresso and is more comparable to the superautomatics/pressurised machines
@dio52

If you want a good espresso to justify the expense of the machine, you need very fresh beans. That generally means buying frequently in small batches directly from higher end roasters that track roast date. I can't imagine there's any savings to be found between the pod and whole beans.

Sorry, superauto's are not drip machines in any way, they make espresso just like semi-autos. Most pre-infuse as well. I myself prefer semi-autos, but I have owned a couple of superautos, and they are nothing short of engineering marvels. The removable brew-groups from DeLonghi and Saeco are ingenious. They can make surprisingly good shots. The biggest downside is usually the built-in grinders which are normally lacking in adjustment and consistency. The grinders can be a pain. They are pretty plasticky too. That said, for casual espresso drinkers they're just fine.

Since the brewing methods are completely different there aren't any machines that would do both. Espresso machines make individual shots of coffee, one at a time. They can't do pots of coffee, and drip coffee makers can't make espresso. Superauto espresso machines are nice, but they can't do pots of coffee either. If you drink more regular coffee than espresso, spend more on the drip machine, OXO, Bonavita, Braun, Technivorm, Cuisinart, Kitchenaid, Capresso etc. I'm partial to Capresso, but they're all good brands. The OXO in particular gets a lot of praise lately. If my Capresso (over 11 years old) ever dies, I'll probably check out the OXO. If you drink espresso infrequently consider inexpensive workarounds like a moka pot (stove-top percolator) that makes espresso style coffee. An Aeropress can make faux espresso (quite good) too. Though, it's not true espresso which is made by forcing pressurized hot water (9 bar) through coffee grounds. Capsule espresso machines are a good choice if convenience is paramount. They take all of the hassle out of it and they're inexpensive to get into (compared to real espresso setups). True espresso fans scoff, but don't let that bother you. Machines like Nespresso can make decent espresso (it's all relative)...but don't buy Nespresso. A much better capsule system is the Lavazza BLUE capsule system. Here's an Amazon link to the LB910 www.amazon.com/Lavazza-LB-901-Espresso-Machine/dp/B01AMMTFXI/ref=sr_1_3?crid=25T8FMI3GGQXC&dchild=1&keywords=lavazza+blue+lb910&qid=1590801194&s=home-garden&sprefix=lavazza+blue+lb%2Cgarden%2C155&sr=1-3 . Lavazza BLUE tastes better, far better. The capsules have more coffee than Nespresso, cost less (around 40 to 50¢ each, vice Nespresso's 70 to 80¢ each. Plus, the capsules are hermetically sealed and have a very long shelf life (over a year, and they taste great even when past date). The only downside to the Lavazza system is less variety than Nespresso, and are usually sold in 100 count boxes (because the BLUE system was designed for commercial use). Don't let it deter you though, for a capsule system it's quite good and again, the capsules last forever. If you want "real" espresso you need a "real" espresso machine such as the Gaggia Classic, and a good burr grinder (around $700 for both). The Gaggia Classic is hands-down the best, least expensive, prosumer espresso machine on the market. Then add a grinder that can do double duty, both drip and espresso such as a Breville Smart Grinder Pro. There are better espresso grinders (Baratza Sette), but none that can do double duty, espresso and drip for under $200. Regarding espresso, you might like to read this guide to Italian espresso www.espressoitaliano.org/files/File/istituzionale_inei_hq_en.pdf It explains everything you ever wanted to know about espressso. No matter what method you choose, grinding whole beans will give you the best coffee. If you don't have one already, buy a nice burr grinder. Hope this helps. Believe it or not, I tried to keep this succinct.

If you are an espresso lover, you need a great GRINDER. Any espresso machine that can get 9 bars of pressure will work, though of course there are bells and whistles for people depending on their tastes. Having said that, the one thing to consider is whether or not you're using a pressurized basket. It's easier to pull a good shot with a pressurized one. But the non-pressurized baskets make better espresso. For most people, a super automatic is the way to go. If you don't want to work on your barista skills and you don't want to waste three pulls dialing in your grind every day -- if you're a perfectionist about your shot -- it's hard to go wrong with a Jura. They're just more expensive. Gaggia makes a budget super automatic that is decent too. It's important to note that espresso is super finicky if you like them straight. They can change throughout the day depending on things like the humidity and the moisture in the bean. If you're making a milk-based drink you can get away with wiggle room. But if you're trying to pull a shot to drink straight, you should invest most of your money in a grinder and the rest on a machine. The rule of thumb is around 2/3rds on a grinder, 1/3rd on the machine. And then you also need fresh roasted coffee. As in, fresh roasted 3-4 days ago. (Any sooner and it hasn't off-gassed enough CO2 yet and you'll get some off flavors.) Anything longer than 14 days, unless you're using a vacuum sealed container like the Airscape vacuum coffee container -- which I can't recommend highly enough -- and your espresso will suffer if you drink it straight. That means you're in the $800+ range for a decent burr grinder and the $400+ range for an espresso machine and you're buying coffee fresh roasted coffee that's $15-20/lb. You can buy a lot of espresso for $1,200 if you have access to a coffee shop that pulls great shots. So these machines are really for hobbyists, not people who want the occasional latte at home.
@lrom5445
5 жыл бұрын
I agree with the great grinder. I'm not sure I'd pair an $800 ginder with a $400 espresso machine. In fact, I'd tend to recommend the exact opposite ratio outside of the low end (where If all you can afford is one good thing, get a good grinder...). At $800 you are in the area of a mazzer mini or super jolly and I can't think of a $400 espresso machine that's giving you a really great shot. Just to make sure I wasn't crazy I had a peek around and everyone I read I saw the exact opposite of what you recommend - with 1/3 being spent on the grinder and 2/3 on the machine. You seem like you definitely know your espresso, so I'm curious where you got your ratio. Everything else you said is spot on, so I'm figure you have reasons. Also, I'm curious about your Airscape vacuum container. I own an airscape coffee container, but never heard of a vacuum line, nor have I found any online. All the airscapes I know are semi-airtight, but by no means utilize a vacuum.

If you want a great semi-auto machine you actually "do" want a Gaggia, just not the Gaggia superauto they're recommending here. The Gaggia Classic (semi-auto like the Breville) is far superior to the Barista Express. Construction-wise it's not even close. The venerable Gaggia Classic is made with solid stainless steel (not steel covered plastic), and is built like a tank. It comes with a heavy commercial grade 58mm portafitler and brass brewing group which allows you use commercial baskets. It's called the Classic for a reason as it has been around forever and is very reliable, but unlike the Breville, it is very easy to work on if/when a part needs to be replaced (all espresso machines have parts that wear out). Parts are cheap and readily available. It's nice to own something designed for the long haul. So, nothing against the Breville, but if you want something heavy duty that makes cafe quality shots you want a Gaggia Classic ($449), and a good burr grinder like a Baratza Sette 30 ($249). Around $700 for both brand new, but you can cut that down to around $500 for both by picking up a used Gaggia Classic on Ebay. Buy the grinder new.

Nope, just get a WACACO Nanopresso portable espresso maker, it's less than $70 and produces the best espresso. I use it at the office everyday.

I think I'll stick with my little $15 melita espresso maker we've had for 20 years. ^_^ Alternative response in the voice of Thurston Howelll the 3rd: "If it doesn't roast my coffee that morning just before it's ground, well then what are we even doing here?"

Oh, hell no. Grind the coffee, put in percolator and brew, pour into cup/mug, add cream, about a pinch each of cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, leave me alone. My grandmother tried to get us to drink iced coffee in the late 1960's and that didn't go too well.

When you're single and living by yourself, it really makes sense to use a french press. The press itself is dirt cheap (cheaper than any drip coffee maker) because its a manual method, it makes a great full-bodied cup, and it's easier to make that great cup compared to pour over methods. Also, single folks are more likely to live in smaller places, so it saves counter space as well. I wont judge anyone who chooses to make espresso at home. But in the end, making espresso at home is less about the morning cup and more about being a hobby. Especially for people who get into the fully manual machines. It's an expensive hobby, but then again, lots of hobbies are expensive. Me? I'll stick to french press coffee, or tea.

My modately priced espresso machine stopped working and I took it apart for a look-see. I found mold inside areas inaccessable to routine cleaning. I suspect this happens with some percentage of them. However low that number is, I will not be looking for another one.

Absolutely, it does occur. One of the attributes of a good espresso machine is how easy it gets to all the parts that will contact beans and/or water. I've had the same issue, and I like the more manual versions that you can every part.

Need a real comparison of superautomatic espresso machines. The ones with a grinder and a milk frother . Jura, Gaggia, etc...Please note most of these machines make a pretty cold caffe Latte and drain water fast in multiple rinsing processes they have.

You "need" an espresso machine? Please a $20 moka pot ... done. And a pod machine?! Do you guys have any interest in the environment? How are pod coffee makers still even a thing?
