Ilwaco Landing dock stacked with thousands of Crab Pots around the processing facilities burned in a commercial structure fire on January 22nd, 2024. The creosote treated dock pilings burned into the night after the Ilwaco Landing dock had collapsed into the water in the Port of Ilwaco. The Crab Pots were staged on Ilwaco Landing dock and Robert Gray Road in order to load the Crab Pots and bait onto the Commercial Crab Boats so they would be ready to start the upcoming Washington State Commercial Crab Season. Commercial Crab Fishermen in Washington State are allowed to drop their baited Crab Pots in the Pacific Ocean on the 29th of January, 2024 so they can pull their Crab Pots on opening day of Commercial Crab Season February 1st, 2024 and bring their catch of Dungeness Crab to market. Unfortunately the fire has destroyed multiple Commercial Crab Boats Crab Pots right before the season starts. Ilwaco Fire Department responded to the Ilwaco Landing Fire and requested mutual aid from Chinook, Long Beach and Fire District 1 around 11 am on January 22nd, 2024. At approximately 12:30 pm mutual aid from Naselle Fire Department was requested. At approximately 1:00 pm Raymond and South Bend Fire Departments sent equipment and personnel to assist the Fire Departments at the Ilwaco Landing Fire. The ATF will be conducting the fire investigation. Washington State Department of Ecology arrived in the Port of Ilwaco on January 23rd, 2024 because the toxic fire debri that fell into the water when the Ilwaco Landing dock and building collapsed that is now floating in the water and being washed up on local beaches, wetlands, and jetties. Some of the floating toxic fire debri has been caught by the boat docks and now surrounds the commercial fishing boats in their slips. A containment boom could be installed in the water around perimeter of the Ilwaco Landing Fire location to mitigate further distribution of floating toxic debri by the ocean tides.
