I spent a couple of days as ballast on a friend's sail boat a few years ago (well, I also pulled on things I was told to pull on). Every docking she did was under sail. She'd come screaming up to dock, put the boat in the perfect position and then just stop dead. I was impressed. I thought we'd be bobbing about amongst a pile of matchwood every time. And she nailed it every time.

I grew up with a father that refused to motor into dock unless under the most dire circumstances. I've been a party to both very beautiful and very stressful docking procedures. Later in life, I remember the first time I saw him drinking a beer in the truck... after we sailed into dock on a very windy day tacking through a narrowly marked path because the motor went out. "Aren't you glad you learned how to sail into dock without a motor?" lol (I think I'm being generous leaving out a few choice words in there). Can't argue with the logic though! haha

Years ago I was teaching sailing at a summer camp near San Francisco. Some of the other counselors liked to tease me a bit and one day a couple of them ran down the dock and decided to steal the boat from me. There was a little bit of a breeze as the two of them hopped into the boat and untied it from the dock. As they started to sail away from the dock I casually wandered down the jetty. Both of them started looking around in the boat for what to do, neither of them thinking to grab the tiller or a sheet or anything. Just as I reached the end of the dock, they completed a full 360 and looked up in shock to see me grab hold of the side stay, they were completely unaware that they had just sailed in a small circle right back to me. It was a satisfying moment...

Right? It is as impressive as flying inverted in a 747 with passengers onboard. You don't leave the boat. Even if you can, you just don't do it until it is tied. You manage every step so there is never even a chance that the boat sails off into the sunset on its own (or, more likely, another boat). People who test their luck this way are more likely than not get punished for it at some point in their life.

🤔🤔🤔 this is just some sort of trick but not docking. While 8 was going back up river to the little per I kept my sail boat, my old engine died out. The river was quite narrow and full of sand banks so it was dodgy to sail back to the per. Anyway that day I had no choice so I sailed. The complications of the narrow river and sand banks didn't end there as the per was very small and I had to dock between 2 fishing boats. It s a bit difficult to explain as I had to use the particular wind direction of the time as well as the current. So I had to sail past the per, have my boat head into the wind to stall her reduce the sail area and push by hand my main so that the wind may push me nicely right between the 2 fishing boats. There was no knocking and banging just a perfect docking. I have to admit that I was a bit stressed 😅😅😅 but I did it and it reinforced my self confidence on my sailing skills. Of course it was done at a time when no one really took video of themselves 24/7 😂 but there was that old German tourist watching me. He said something like: ”I can see that you have practiced that manoeuvre many times, excellent”. I didn't tell him the truth that it was the first time 😂 but I was sure very happy.

He didn’t achieve the docking, as he didn’t tie up to the pontoon! I’d have been more impressed if he’d luffed the main on the approach to allow the boat to become stationary alongside, then casually step off with the aft mooring warp, hooking under a dockside cleat and then gone to the bow to do the same for the bow warp (or painter in the case of a sailing dinghy). In fact he could be criticised for not being in command of his boat to be frank! But then, I’ve seen many sailing mishaps caused by additional risks introduced by cocky attitudes.
